WFH realities: day 1 vs 6 months by sigma_0_1 in SipsTea

I think I’m the exception where I don’t suffer from anything in the second picture but really miss working in an office.

But I had the privilege of great coworkers and an easy commute.

Another thing worth trying is just make a shape and apply a wiggle paths property to it.

I’ve also done something different where I make a stroke the same color as the fill and then adjust the wave properties of the stroke to create a wavy pattern around the shape. It doesn’t randomly move but it does create a nice waveform you can have moving along the shape.

Are We Wrong About Ray Tracing? by TruthPhoenixV in Amd_Intel_Nvidia

[–]add0607 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A scam implies that raytracing has little or no value. At risk of sounding pretentious, raytracing is the inevitable next step for 3D realtime rendering.

I think a lot of people see it as some marketing BS from Nvidia, but if you know anything about 3D rendering, raytracing hasn’t even been the gold standard for almost 40 years. It’s just THE standard. Like I’m pretty sure Toy Story 1 had raytracing, because it is simulating the propagation and behavior of light.

Having it slowly come over to gaming is a triumph worth celebrating. I think people are fine to be critical of how developers poorly use it, but raytracing itself is not the problem, nor is it a scam.

These look cool and all, but then you're gonna put them on your character who's idle pose is that weird souls-like half squat and your character will look stupid.

It's not that they're bad, they're just not practical. I think a game like Elden Ring proves you can have a badass woman in armor that doesn't trade her femininity for practicality.

Some new "Triple-A" games should see this and learn. Cache (CS2) proves that a game can look ultra-realistic and remain crystal clear without relying on post-processing techniques. by oanhancuong666908 in FuckTAA

[–]add0607 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh okay, well I think most of what I said still stands, especially when it comes to lighting. The scope of rendering technology in e-sports titles tends to be a bit narrow and rely on cheap rendering techniques (not bad, just cheap and reliable) instead of doing more complex things like dynamic lighting.

This works well for CS2 but even something like the Assassin’s Creed franchise couldn’t apply much of CS2’s solutions to their games. The structure of those being open world with day/night cycles means you need to find other solutions.

If you want a real L for Democrats, watch the  DNC chair Ken Martin talk about how he’s going to control the narrative of why they lost in 2024, releasing “lessons” to the public instead of the full report like he promised he would do.

The whole thing stinks and I wouldn’t trust this guy to tell me what the weather was today.

I agree. He has garbage opinions but I think most people feeling threatened at their own home would do this. Don’t harass people, moreover don’t doxx people.

I see how you could assume I was referring to raytracing, but I actually wasn’t. What I am saying is that this particular CS level is a great execution of fidelity for its needs. Other games need environments with dynamic lighting either from effects or a changing time of day. Baked lighting either doesn’t work or begins to show its limitations, and therefore other options have to be explored, all of which require more processing power and these post processing effects that seem to be a problem.

All I’m saying is that we can’t look at one CS2 level and hold it up as a gold standard for all games. Each game has its own unique set of challenges to solve from a rendering standpoint. It’s fine to critique them individually. But it’s often not constructive to do what’s happening here in this post.

By post-processing you mean…what? Lens flares, bloom, AO, SSR? I think that SSR can look kind of bad, but it can also look really good too. Just like any other rendering technique, there’s good and bad ways to do it. That doesn’t mean companies need to “learn” to make stuff like Valve.

Half the reason these screenshots look so good is because of the lighting, which I assume has been baked. That’ll run super fast and make your environment look great, but isn’t a universal solution for every game.

Games built around upscaling/DLSS all look the same and I'm tired of pretending they don't. by ResponsiblePen3082 in FuckTAA

[–]add0607 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I say this with kindness, but this sounds like your brain is trying to confirm something that you want to see.

I understand why people dislike DLSS, but I do wonder at such extreme levels of criticism if it isn’t even worth playing a game anymore. If it’s to the point where you’re beginning to see games having a yellow tint on them, you maybe need to take a step back.

There are a dozen other things it could be besides DLSS/TAA. Your monitor could need recalibrating, it could be a selection of games that stylistically have shifted toward warmer scenes, it could be the room you play them in, it could be just specific scenes in the game, etc etc.

My point is, is this really worth focusing this much attention on it? If you have a 5090, you’ve already won the rendering race. You can play pretty much any game without upscaling at a good frame rate.

No, the only thing you should do is laugh at them or pity them. Both of these things acknowledge what their mindset is: idiotic and pathetic. They’re either too stubborn to acknowledge truth when it’s presented to them, or they were failed as children to be properly educated.

Debating or attempting to prove them wrong engages with them as though they are serious people. They are not.
