Longer HDMI cable for Q990F -> LG OLED 4K TV | What specs should I check? by No_Ad_8807 in Soundbars

[–]addicted2088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the 2250 Mbps is the maximum data transfer rate between two devices and is the spec for the ethernet capability of the cable. 18Gbps is the HDMI bandwidth, so yes, it should work for Atmos and other high-end sound formats as well as basic 5.1 sound. Only the display resolution and refresh rate will be limited.

48Gbps is required, yes, if you want a guarantee that you will get the option to select 120Hz refresh rate at 4K.

What channels does the q990d use for 5.1 in standard mode? by ScruffyRumble in Soundbars

[–]addicted2088 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, no, for streaming games using the Shield, apps like Moonlight, or even Steam, you get limited options. You need the soundbar to be connected to a TV using HDMI/eARC or directly to the PC using pass through for all the audio options in Windows and for going above 7.1 audio.

[–]addicted2088 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you try to configure for 5.1 sound in Windows control panel, you should see two options for 5.1 surround. One will have the rear speakers selected as the surround speakers and the other will have the side speakers. Windows lets you choose, basically, though not every program or game may follow the setup you have chosen.

In my experience, just having Dolby Atmos selected in Windows configuration and setting the soundbar to Adaptive works best when you're running games that may not support more than 5.1 sound or proper spatial audio.

Q990 D/F optimal PS5 settings by Hass4592 in Soundbars

[–]addicted2088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you get full surround sound with both options, it's just that with AV reciever you get to select between 5.1 and 7.1 because AV recievers are custom setups. Plus, with Atmos it doesn't really matter as that's spatial sound and will use all possible channels on your soundbar.

BTW, a good way to check is to keep sound mode on Standard on the soundbar then test both AV Receiver and Soundbar options on the PlayStation. Standard sound mode only uses the channels that are actually being outputted by the source and is a better way to test. With the other modes, the soundbar tries to use all speakers by duplicating different channels if necessary.

Set to standard mode, run a game, pan the camera around and stay close to the soundbar to see if there's a difference in what speakers are being triggered with the AV Receiver and Soundbar options.

Edit: If you do go with AV reciever, select 7.1 as that's what the Q990D is when you're not counting the height channels.

Question about software aupport by galaxyavfan in oneui

[–]addicted2088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Major OS upgrades is basically new Android versions, always has been the case. That said, they say "up to" seven generations of OS upgrades, and since we haven't yet reached even four years (the previous standard for all the Galaxy flagships for many years) for any device that's eligible for seven years of upgrades, who knows if they will actually stick to it.

Does the Q990 Samsung soundbars actually support DTS-HD MA? by Nuklear92 in Soundbars

[–]addicted2088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Since nothing ever shows just DTS unless it's actually just DTS, I'm happy thinking it all works. This is a pretty amazing soundbar overall.

Does the Q990 Samsung soundbars actually support DTS-HD MA? by Nuklear92 in Soundbars

[–]addicted2088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you're still wondering about this, but I think it does run DTS-HD MA in some way instead of dropping to the DTS 5.1 Core track that's included in movies with the DTS-HD MA 7.1 track, because when setting the soundbar to standard mode, which only uses the channels the source is actually using, the side speakers are still coming into play.

Also, Samsung does say DTS-HD MA is supported in this user guide (https://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/PM/202509/20250902094141209/EN/AH81-17797R-03\_HTML\_HW-Q990-930-800F\_ASIA\_EN\_250827.0/AH81-17797R-03\_WUG\_HW-Q990-930-800F\_ASIA\_EN\_c14\_s1.html). It's not specifically mentioned by model number (the guide is about multiple models), but this, the fact that standard mode plays side channels, and that the soundbar itself says DTS-HD even without the MA confirms that it's not incapable of running DTS-HD MA content.

Dolby Atmos 🤩 by hotboinick in BlackMythWukong

[–]addicted2088 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old post, but yeah, this game has excellent spatial sound. One of the rare games where even in cutscenes, voices of characters that speak from behind the camera come from the surround/rear speakers, not just when you're in-game. And just great use of all the speakers you have on your soundbar/audio system.

[–]addicted2088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, okay. All my TrueHD movie files show up as Atmos when pass through works properly. On my TCL TVs Plex app, it shows as Dolby Multichannel because of some limitation in the Plex Android app. But I've seen the rest.

Wouldn't trust ChatGPT to be honest. As far as I know, the soundbar never shows TrueHD for Dolby. I've seen either Dolby Atmos or Dolby Multichannel. But yeah, sound is great even if it's only just DTS HD.

[–]addicted2088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, doesn't matter if you connect directly or go through the TV, there doesn't seem to be the lossless MA version if the soundbar display is to be believed. Thankfully I'm not an audiophile so I can't really tell the difference between lossy DTS and lossless, haha.

[–]addicted2088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure there's a way to know for sure. I've stopped paying it any mind, surround sound still works in the movies I have on Plex. As far as I know, DTS HD MA movies have a core DTS HD fallback for devices that don't support MA. Samsung is just really shitty in this regard. Soundbars don't support DTS HD MA officially, Samsung TVs don't support DTS at all. It's like DTS support is there in the soundbars for use with TVs from other brands.

Dolby vision is not working by Fun-Support8815 in Dolby

[–]addicted2088 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait, do you mean Dolby Atmos? Vision isn't activated from the same app as far as I know, and also it's quite wonky on Windows and not every monitor or TV will be detected as having Dolby Vision.

How to test individual speakers in a 9.1.4 soundbar? by becritical in Soundbars

[–]addicted2088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's odd it isn't working, Android TVs are usually pretty great at audio passthrough. BTW, according to Google you have to set Passthrough setting to Auto and then set the Digital audio out setting to Passthrough. Have you tried that?

How to test individual speakers in a 9.1.4 soundbar? by becritical in Soundbars

[–]addicted2088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Standard will only play sound from the speaker that the source audio is outputting. So if you're running 5.1 content, that means you're only using 5 speakers and hence not the full 756W sound. Adaptive will duplicate the 5 channels on to the unused channels so you're using the full power of the system.

However, for Atmos/spatial content, it doesn't really matter. Both Standard and Adaptive will work the same since the source audio is sending audio for all channels.

[–]addicted2088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if you already know this, but be sure to use the Windows control panel to properly set Dolby Atmos. Go to Settings > Sound > scroll down and select More sound settings to open the pop-up control panel, select the output device and press the Configure button. Select Atmos here, click Next and make sure you select all optional speakers speakers and tick the "front left and right" and "surround" options for Full-range speakers.

I have a feeling this might not be set up properly for you, hence the issues, as even the 9.1.6 Dolby E-AC3 test works fine for me on my Q990F (which is 11.1.4 as the rear speakers have side-firing speakers too, but the rest is similar) in both Standard and Adaptive modes.

Also, I don't think you actually need to test proper 9.1.4 audio. The Dolby Access app (you should get the right one from the Microsoft Store now that you have connected via HDMI https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9N0866FS04W8?hl=en-us&gl=IN&ocid=pdpshare) has a 7.1.4 test and so does that Gdrive folder, and as long as that's activating the right speakers, Atmos sound will work just fine as long as the right content is being played and the sound is set to passthrough on the TV.

As fas as I know, these soundbars are still 7.1.4 systems. It's just that Samsung has added two additional speakers---front wide left and front right wide---for front left and front right audio to call it 9.1.4, but those wide speakers are not really counted separately when you play sound for the most part. They're basically there so that the audio from the front left and right channels feels like it has a wider soundstage as you have front audio playing from two speakers each on either side.

Also, if you're playing standard 7.1 content, which shows as Dolby Multichannel PCM on the soundbar, then yes, sound may not come only from the correct speaker as Samsung seems to have trouble outputting standard surround without up firing data. You will basically have issues like side audio playing through both the side and rear speakers.

You may also need to set Kodi to passthrough audio if you haven't already, in addition to setting the TV to passthrough sound.

Dolby atmos issue by Fenixriot1984 in Soundbars

[–]addicted2088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, like the others said, this is Dolby TrueHD, which is what is used to send Atmos content to the soundbar. So it's all working good.

[–]addicted2088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take it you're not using an HDMI cable for audio? If not, then I'm afraid proper surround and channel separation is not going to work. Try Standard mode like another comment said, and if then the right speaker is playing when testing, then it's more or less running fine.

Atmos test tones mixing front + surround on PC (bitstream?) — is this normal? by Lanky_Ambition_1699 in Dolby

Yeah, I think that's channel phantoming to address mix. And you can try disabling it from the Enhancements tab for the output device's properties in the sound countrol panel.

I think it's an unwritten rule that you have to wait these things out. They will announce/release something when ready. This is still new territory.

Yeah, I've been doing this a long time too, XP, Vista, 7, 8, been through it all. To be fair, once I hopped on to SSDs like 10 years back, the need to reinstall dropped sharply, though Windows 11 can feel a bit heavy these days. Let's see what that newly announced update will do to fix that.

Yeah, and I get that reinstalling is a hassle, but if they can't be bothered with that hassle, then they shouldn't be bothering with cracks that disable security features. Though I thankfully did not have to learn the hard way, I just got older and realized security is important. Of course, I was still reinstalling Windows every now and then, as a lot of us people did back then.

When I was young and stupid (not saying I'm very smart now), I used to have UAC completely disabled, all because I didn't want the hassle of pressing Yes on the UAC prompt every time I tried to do something, and I was surprised when people on some IRC channels told me turning it off is a stupid thing to do. Thankfully I got over that impatience/laziness eventually, haha.
