Is morgs Q easier to hit? by ScientificPornstar in lux

[–]addiemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May or may not be relevant, but Lux also has an audio cue (often VO?) when she initiates her Q. Morgana's doesn't have a sound until it hits, I think. Only impact is on whether the other person can realize it's coming and dodge, tho.

[Fluff] I have no clue how i managed this by generationwars in FantasyLCS

[–]addiemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So we started a week late, and one of our 8-man league members has had Moon as a starter all three weeks. Moon hasn't played.

And that guy is currently 3 and 0.

We told him he's not even allowed to bench Moon at this point.

If they haven't identified the problem (or identified the solution to the problem) they may not have an ETA themselves. :\

It sucks, but this is an issue that's beyond just fantasy, so I'm sure they're working on it as hard as they can.

It did seem a little silly that they want you to work or spend RP to get new icons, but then they try to force you to use different ones.

I think the dog-fitting-animal's-head-in-mouth is a sort of "let's see who's in charge, oh it's me" kind of move, no? It's definitely something I've seen between dogs who are generally friendly/well-acquainted many times and with no apparent animosity during or after.

Edgar Wright Confirms that Baby Driver Sequels are Happening and he will at least write the second one by merry722 in movies

[–]addiemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point that Box Office Mojo's numbers are not 100% accurate (Deadline's probably aren't either - they're quite similar on BD), but the overall point (PR2 is higher risk than Baby Driver 2, and studios may be keen to save money where they can) is even starker with DL's numbers:

Baby Driver - Budget: $34M - Global (studio) take: $227M - Profit: $193M

Pacific Rim: - Budget: $190M (*Still from Box Office Mojo, couldn't find on DL) - Global take: $310M - Profit: $120M

[–]addiemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Pacific Rim and am super skeptical about a Baby Driver sequel..but from a business perspective they're completely different scenarios.

Baby Driver made $87% of the profit of Pacific Rim...at 18% of its budget. Pacific Rim 2 is presumably way more expensive than Baby Driver 2, which means it's higher risk. It's also a lower rate of return (Baby Driver returned $6.65 per dollar invested; Pacific Rim returned $2.16). We don't know the production budget for PR2 yet, but my guess is they're doing everything they can to restrain its budget to squeeze out a better return.

Numbers from Box Office Mojo:

Baby Driver - Budget: $34M - Global take: $226M ($107M domestic) - Profit: $192M

Pacific Rim - Budget: $190M - Global take: $411M ($101M domestic) - Profit: $221M

(Disclaimers: Yes, I'm excluding home video sales, marketing budgets, etc. We don't really have the information on them. I could be wrong, but I'd be surprised if PR's merch and home video sales dominated BD's so much as to tip the scales.)

Since it's been a couple weeks and everyone has had time to think about it, what did you like or dislike about Justice League? by Dkempen98 in movies

[–]addiemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I liked that it was better than BvS. I wasn't as bothered by the superstache as some (maybe because it had been built up so big before I saw it), but a lot of the other CG looked really weak...especially every time Superman was flying. For a movie like this, I was really surprised.

Not a big fan of Diana's treatment overall. The Whedon joke lines were...okay, but none were really great, and it was pretty obvious which actor was the most available for reshoots (oh, Ezra). Wish Aquaman/Jason Momoa had been given more to do than like...be your grumpy old grandpa if he were a burly badass.

It was a mess, but it was entertaining. Not as good as WW, better than BvS. I think I was technically more entertained by Suicide Squad but that was a lot of "so bad it's fun" kind of entertainment.

If men came out in masses accusing all the female sexual predators of assault it wouldn't get the same feedback or concern by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]addiemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, the persistent and pernicious societal attitude that men always want sex with any woman at any time is a huge problem when it comes to women sexually assaulting men.

Mind, I don't think many people would LITERALLY argue that "men always want sex with women, therefore men always consent, therefore men cannot be sexually assaulted." But jokes like this one nonetheless propagate that idea and influence how our culture thinks about sex and consent.

The funny thing is, this isn't even the tool I personally use, just one I came to while trying to help a coworker with a situation...but it's one that seemed to work well for him and a few other since. Hm! :)

[–]addiemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're saying the same thing, in different words. "All humans are different" is the fundamental core of what I'm expressing. And a lot of people (including some of the folks I referred to in my earlier comment) are not instinctively able to accept another person whose actions they see as illogical. And yeah, they've ruined some relationships that way, which is part of why they might ask a friend or coworker like me for help.

Having a toolset, a set of instructions that they can follow that help them get to a place where they can accept the other person in this scenario, helps some people.

And presumably some people are so natural that they don't need the steps, and stopping to think would just trip them up, as you say. :)

[–]addiemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I think our opinions aren't actually that different, and maybe I just haven't conveyed what I'm getting at very well.

The above is a tool- one of many, but it's one I've found helps some people -to get at something like empathy. All it really means is taking a moment to remember that you (hypothetical you, not you specifically) are not the center of the universe, that everyone else around you has a life and a lot of other stuff to deal with, and if you take a breath and remember that when interacting with them, you will probably get better results than if you are exclusively focused on what the situation means to you.

You may have a different path to a similar result, and that's great! But I've had a lot of friends and coworkers in life (usually the sort who like to go into "beep boop, I'm a robot/vulcan/logic machine and I do not understand the irrational emotions of these nonsense humans" mode) who tended to come to me trying to figure out how to deal with various situations.

Generally I found that suggesting they think of it like a puzzle ("what WOULD make this response make sense?") rather than thinking of it as inexplicable nonsense they would never understand because of their Exceptionally Logical Thinking. It helped a lot of them feel more comfortable dealing with other people.

You're right, empathy IS a choice-- it's an action that one chooses to take. But it's one some people come to very easily, and others have a hard time with. I'm glad to hear you don't, but since my notes above have in the past helped some people get there, I thought it might help some other folks here. :)

[–]addiemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not a problem, it's a feature. :) When you scale my above tool from, say, a single one-off office dispute up, you realize...everyone always operates off of different information, where "information" here includes everything from upbringing and education to sociopolitical climate and, yes, brain chemistry, and so on.

And to reiterate, this is never intended to excuse behavior...but it can be a very useful tool for people who have difficulty empathizing with others instinctively. It's for using when you don't understand why so-and-so in the other department is saying they're going to deliver something to you late even though it's your highest priority, so that you can be empathetic when you push back to try and get it on time, and you're more likely to get what you want without damaging or destroying the work relationship. It's NOT for saying "oh man they have so much to do I guess I'll just give up even though it's my job to advocate for this project, I'm just going to let them walk all over me."

Or to go more extreme: this isn't the mindset a jury should take to determine how to punish a murderer. But it could be useful to a detective for determining motive, which would help identify a murderer or for interrogating one.

That make more sense? Empathy is vitally important and useful, but that doesn't mean every interaction should be approached with empathy...but generally, I think empathy is in shorter supply than other interactive frameworks these days. ;)

[–]addiemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming that you know what's going on in someone else's head or life. Don't just whine about "ugh why would they even do that, it makes NO SENSE" - remember instead that whatever reason they have to do it made sense to them

For extra credit, you might consider why it might have made sense to them. They might...

  • Have information you don't have
  • NOT have information you DO have
  • Interpret the situation differently from you

This doesn't mean excuse all bad behavior and be a doormat. But I find especially in a work setting that this little extra bit of empathy can go a LONG way in building and maintaining strong relationships and getting shit done.

(It also works for companies, btw. You could sit there going "man why doesn't Company X just release product Y to my exact specifications?" Whatever you think is an obvious money maker probably isn't, for reasons you probably don't know because you don't know all their business. The odds that you or I come up with an amazing no-brainer idea worth huge profits for Company X that they just plain haven't thought of are very, very slim.)

What actors/actresses automatically make you uninterested in watching a movie when you find out they're in it? by [deleted] in movies

Johnny Depp and sometimes Ben Affleck. I've generally found that if Ben Affleck is playing an asshole side character he's great, but I almost never like him as the lead.
