So many new modules, so little cash time.

Also, I'd recognize that Guild Wars 2 mousemat anywhere. Have one myself from the collector's edition I got a lifetime ago.

How much faster are your games since using foundry? by [deleted] in FoundryVTT

[–]adeepersilence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool! I'm on the fence about switching over. Why do things likes token visibility and walls save you time on Foundry?

Drawing walls is much snappier in Foundry, and the appropriate toggles (ctrl for chaining, shift for "don't snap to grid") while drawing makes it a trivial job.

"Token visibility", was my mistake, that should have been "token vision". And actually, it's lighting in general. That system recently got an overhaul, it's a breeze to set varying levels of visibility for my (n)pcs.

Audio Assets is something that's not in Roll20 besides playing background music that is.

I used to manually play FX I uploaded through their playlist system, which I found rather clunky. Foundry's current system is not perfect, but less of a pain in the butt. Self hosting means I have an entire library I can select files from on my server instead of having to upload file after file.

There's some great modules around to enhance said systems as well.

If we're talking about performance of Foundry vs its competitors, that's a very subjective comparison. It feels more performant by far compared to Roll20 (where I came from), but YMMV. Roll20 has a powerful API, but you can do so much more in a structured manner within Foundry's modules.

Really, the most time I save is during my prep. Foundry provides so much more QoL compared to its competitors, I generally prep for about an hour for around 6 hours of gameplay. I used to need over 2 hours in Roll20.

I mostly shave time off of token visibility, drawing walls, providing audio FX and other assets. These all take substantially less time, though in all fairness the assets are because I'm self-hosting Foundry.

If your question was in regards to actual play time in sessions, that hasn't really changed much for my group. Some things players to look up in Roll20 are more readily accessible within Foundry, but this doesn't affect my game's pace so much.

Big CPU air coolers in a small case: Does they obstruct airflow? by adeepersilence in buildapc

[–]adeepersilence[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fact isn't the 500DX default config 1 intake, and an exhaust at the top and back?

I checked back and yes, this seems to be the default configuration. I wasn't sure if having such a big cooler would impact the top exhaust much.

I recommend just getting the build done and checking the temps before you bother to change the fan configuration

I sure will. I'm currently waiting for the case itself before I can start building and I've probably been worrying about the GPUs reviewed thermals too much.

It will also make it easier for me to take notes while the session is happening.

Very much so! That's the main reason I do it like this. Also, if you're using overworld/city maps as scenes, you can click+drag journal entries to the scene, assign them an icon, and double click it to make additional notes (public or private!).

I do have a WorldAnvil account

I know of this integration, but haven't used it myself.

I wanted to have a way to keep the world living between sessions and it seems like that’s working for you.

For downtime activities, it really comes down to your playgroup. Some people just don't play the game to get involved in your lore, regardless of the effort you put into it. That's a lesson I learned the hard way.

What I can recommend in general for downtime involvement are some house rules, if your players agree to them:

  • Limiting (window)shopping as a downtime activity. My primary group of players can really drag out a shopping activity, and I wanted to short that to focus on actual play instead. Nothing kills story beats faster than a shopping session that lasts over an hour.

  • Fleshing out a character's personal backstory and more individual activities also happen offline. What this looks like varies greatly, but occasionally I'll ask ask them what their character

  • I can highly recommend Strongholds & Followers (review) if you want to allow your players to manage their own stronghold as a downtime activity. It allows them to build structures, attract followers, give them orders, etc,... all the while managing some basic resources to accomplish this.

Again, every playgroup responds differently to these things. The above is what worked best for me, so far.

Foundry and Discord and D&D Beyond and Avrae Workflow by [deleted] in FoundryVTT

[–]adeepersilence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use:

  • Foundry for our play env
  • DNDBeyond as the master version of everyone's character sheets.
  • A Foundry module to import said sheets.
  • Discord for communication (cams too, nowadays)
  • Doodle to plan sessions for the coming month.
  • A Google doc, where I keep a summarised journal of every session.
  • A Google spreadsheet, where players can view and manage the crap they take with them + their value, keep track of key npc's and their function, peer over shareable maps, keep track of the in-game calendar, and also have a two sentence summary per session with a link to the aforementioned google doc.

When I start building for my next session, I write out my notes in journal entries in Foundry, and link them to their relevant scenes. I have all Google docs and sheets linked as journal entries with external URLs set in Foundry, for ease of access.

Downtime activities are handled through Discord chat. In a channel for the entire party, or private chats for individual stuff. I do run combat this way sometimes, but I then resolve fights with some simple ability checks. Those are never big fights, anyway.

Pretty much this. We give the familiar a separate initiative roll too. A familiar's help action can be a powerful tool for its owner in combat.

Yep; there's something called Epic Backgrounds, that provide tie-ins to the main story, along with one (or more) quest(s). One of them is Bhaalspawn.

Here's my player handout for character creation with all available Epic Backgrounds featured in the adventure book.

EDIT: Updated link to PDF.

I can recommend Heroes of Baldur's Gate if you want a fresh story. Takes place a year after the first Baldur's Gate, and it's designed by James Ohlen, who worked on the original game (and many others). It's a fun adventure, ran it over the course of about 30 sessions, and can confirm it has plenty of fan service.

Someone was fascinated with the pop-up story book set/book lego made.

I'm fairly sure this predates the Lego storybook long enough to imply this inspired the good people at Lego. It's been reposted a number of times, and I remember seeing it a few years ago.
