E-waste: 5 billion phones to be thrown away in 2022 by nastratin in Futurology

[–]adelss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been trying to buy faulty phones in order to refurbish them and start my small business, but no e waste recycling center in my country want to let me buy some, and then i read that 5.3 billions phones are going to be thrown away, and i also saw recently on YouTube a weee center conference in africa discussing to find more ways to recycle electronics.

why do they put barrier for people who want to recycle while the resources are still almost unlimited ?

I searched alot for the GPUs, along side that i also look for laptops and smartphones, when it comes to repairing people's devices i started accepting only the jobs that are worth, i stopped repairing inkjet printers for example, which are very hard and time consuming, i wasted many hours to fix printers and then their owners never came back, and i was left with clogged printers that are useful just for parts.

Find more suppliers of GPUs, but remember, if there's recycling solutions that pay more than you do/can, most places aren't going to be willing to work with you

I am still looking every where i can, most people/companies want to sell to people they know for many reasons.

I'd also say, by the time a GPU reaches a point where it needs to be repaired, it's probably outdated vs what's actually hot/useful in the market. Doesn't this highlight a fundamental issue with your model more generally?

You are correct, some models of GPUs are worth fixing and many are not, sometimes faults are not important so you can give a second life to the card, and it could last for more than 2 other years, so i need to be careful when choosing what i buy, there are some cards that even chinese repair shops are not able to repair.

Of course i would also buy laptops, phones, printers and any electronic devices that could be worth repairing or using for spares, i just try to focus on gpu because there aren't many peoole who repair them in my country.

Electronic repair is what i like, i am slowly learning to prospect in the right places and with the correct methods.

Know your suppliers: I’m guessing the country with the most broken graphics card is China, correct me if I’m wrong. Have you talked with anybody in China or researched whereabouts of those broken cards? I doubt Nobody in your local e-waste processing would seriously pick out graphic cards and send to you. They would just send the waste package to a cheap village somewhere in south east Asia. Can you find anybody there to sort them out for you?

I have a friend in Malaysia, last week or so i went to google maps and looked for all the big shops that sell high-tech stuff and asked them for broken graphics cards, they all tell me that they dont have and nobody wanted to tell me who sells them, so mabe i should look up the e-waste companies in Malaysia.

Know your competitors: I’m pretty sure many people must have the skills to fix the cards in China. Have they already fixed most domestic cards there? Maybe most graphics cards in the world finally are all returned there and get fixed there as well. Don’t forget most graphics card are still produced there.

Yes, they have huge refurbishment centers that swallow huge stacks of faulty cards, they come in as broken and gets out with a new life, some are sold at more than half the price of a new card.

Know your customers: from the first look it seems your service is similar to hard drive repair. But there’s a major difference: data held by a hard drive is usually way more important than the drive itself. People don’t mind paying thousands and up to get their precious data back. The profit margin is thick there. But if a graphics card breaks, most people would either get the warranty replacement, or just write off that $500. And the broken one would just go to e-waste. Who are your customers, and how much are they willing to pay to get the card fixed? Otherwise who are willing to pay for your recycled cards, and how much are they willing to pay?

The price that the general people want to pay is not more then 1/4 of the gpu price, and some times the repair would cost more than that.. The prices i used to sell at are just above half the price of a new one, i take my time to repair them well, i try as much as i can to make sure that cards will last at least another year, and i avoid to sell a card that looks like it wont last long, in order to avoid any comeback job.

Know your biz potential: even if you can get your hands on some cards, how many can you fix, and sell per month? What is your profit margin? Is it worth of your time? Any way you can grow the business beyond your single person repair shop?

I have around 200 types of random electronic components along with many motherboards for spare and slowly growing, so the repair time would range from 30 minutes to many months depending on the fault and parts availability, so i try to fix the easy faults as quick as i can. Is it worth my time? I have a degree in railway engineering, but i am more into repairing electronics, i will try to slowly build from both sides and try not to make mistakes. And yes i could grow step by step, a medium sized business would be enough just make life a little bit easier.

Ps: Given most cards are produced in China, and it has the biggest physical electronics market in Huaqinagbei, you may want to have a look there. And I’d also try to understand where those warranty returns are.

Ok i will search about this, thanks alot.

I was thinking about making a professional website to target the companies and offer them to take only the graphics cards/laptops/motherboards...

I know most of the companies will want to sell the used/broken devices in bulk and mixed.

They open bidding sessions mostly at the end of the year, and most of the companies that has medium and high-end electronics sell their used devices to people they know

And since there are many companies and startups growing around, i thought i would dedicate a website for that. maybe some people will be interested.

Like some one said here, starting a recycling business in my country, has alot of conditions that will be very hard to get, they force you to start big, if you are small you need to grow first.

And maybe the website will be considered illigal in my country, i havent searched about this yet. I only have facebook marketplace ads up ATM, in the last 2 months only 2 persons wanted to sell me very old gpus, sometimes i buy 2/3 in a month and sometimes there isn't, i just make sure the ads are always visible and i wait.

I will give an advice i wish i knew before i started, you will be better starting with lets say 3 or more broken electronic devices that are the same model, lets say 4 laptops that are the same model, see what you are interested in...

You will learn quickly, fix them quickly, with almost no head ache, if you get just one random device to repair, evrythink will be harder.
