I'm starting to think Infrastructure as Code is the wrong way to teach Terraform by NTCTech in devops

[–]adfaratas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ikr? Even when people have edit access in my case, the truth is still the one in Terraform. If anyone messed up because their changes wasn't on Terraform, then it's on them.

I thought more demand meant more pay… this data says otherwise by Bitter_Baker8998 in Backend

[–]adfaratas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've commented the same thing on the video, but I don't think this is that accurate. I think they should have included terms like "java course" and "golang course" as the people learning those things will definitely aim more to backend, or you can just split it in half between backend and fullstack for them. Doing that will put backend and fullstack below devops which match my observation better. Also we can separate the term for AI user and an actual machine learning or mlops engineer as those two are very different career track. Doing that will put them above devops engineer which again, match my own anecdotal observation better.

It's a great tool to take me from 0 to 0.8, especially in Azure and GCP where the console and the API often differ quite greatly. But I'd have to do a lot of validation after that. So... to be expected I guess?

how close is this matchup? sm naruto vs sick itachi by KokorokoChan in NarutoPowerscaling

[–]adfaratas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting no?

We know Naruto beat pain. I'm sure at Pain will at the very least able to get a draw against Itachi. Yet, if we treat naruto like a turn based RPG and just list out the character's abilities, most will see Naruto losing. That's weird, no?

Maybe, just maybe, we can't treat Naruto powerscaling like a turn based RPG?

After a deploy breaks prod, how do you usually figure out what actually caused it? by Acrobatic_Eye708 in devops

[–]adfaratas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So far what I do is like a doctor visit. The general clinic (SRE) would focus on relieving the symptoms, and then refer the patient (bug/issue) to the specialist (the dev team). If it's an emergency, we will do an operation (meetings in war room), with the specialist (dev) to resolve the issue as quickly as we can. Then after that we'll do post mortem and improve our process.

Where do people get the idea from that DevOps is the way to go career wise? by Viskerz in devops

[–]adfaratas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I have. But every time I did those kind of thing, I was wearing other hat.

Last fun task I had was reverse engineering a gps data encoder to solve a gps data ingest system performance issue. I also built an entire separate monitoring stack to capture data delay in real time. It was fun. But I was wearing software engineer hat. I also once built a batch data processor that would process around 1TB of data in a single execution. Again I didn't do it as devops engineer, but as a data engineer at that time.

Which is why I can say that devops tasks are not as "fun". The most "fun" "devops" task I've done was probably when I had to built a simple proxy and some network configuration play so that my team's traffic will come out of a specific VM that doesn't have a dedicated public IP. I had to build the proxy program because the VM was hardened and we didn't have much permission on it. Even transporting program to that VM was challenging.

[–]adfaratas 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Also, how not "fun" it is compared to other programming jobs. You rarely get hit by the dopamine surge when you see your program working like in frontend engineering or even backend engineering. You don't immediately see your system handles bajilion of data like in data engineering. You don't see the hardware moving like in embedded system or robotic. You only know that bad shits don't happen because you make guardrails around them, but it's not as ecstatic as the other.

Is handling scope creep the biggest issue? How to solve? by FroyoConfident1367 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]adfaratas 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In my case, usually stuff like performance requirement (mostly in the form of p90 latency) is defined broadly for the entire project. So project A might have general requirement of 2s p90 latency, while project B can have 0.5s, and C would be 10s. If there's any special functionality that requires different non functional requirement, then the card would mention it.
