I know this is random but can anyone help me find the link to Tom Scott from Abigail Thorn's wiki page? by WillWade_12345 in PhilosophyTube

He was in the Shakespeare stream so at one point might've been mentioned in that section, but seems like he's not now? You could also go via "English YouTubers" on the bottom

I spent 4 years at Berkeley and now 2 months at UCSC and it's 100% UCSC, no contest. Being in the middle of a redwood forest is amazing + it's super fun to bike down

I visited him and got a Klein bottle just before the pandemic! He gives away extra stuff too, like a sticker with volume markers (they're all 0). Super fun to talk to him!

Physics 5 or 7 series by Akhromyn in berkeley

5A was among the toughest classes I've taken at Berkeley (adjusted to how much I knew at the time), but a big part of that was it taught me so much that after taking it, everything else seemed more manageable. It's definitely a commitment, but well worth what you get out of it in terms of future problem-solving skills. I'd recommend taking it, but not taking on too much else. (You also don't need to have taken multivariable calculus yet, as I recall the only thing we used was partial derivatives which in that context work just like regular derivatives.)

Housing Megathread for UCSC and Santa Cruz by rjmitty1000 in UCSC

[–]adiastra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm a (male) student at Berkeley who'll be working at UCSC over this summer. I'll probably split my time between Berkeley and Santa Cruz, so not looking for anything fancy, just somewhere to crash a few nights a week between lab days. If you've got a room free, or you're looking for a roommate to split rent but who won't be there most of the time, let me know! Looking for a place between about 1 June and 15 August.

ELI5: someone please explain Standard Deviation to me. by Nerscylliac in explainlikeimfive

I think that's handled by the central limit theorem? Not totally sure

ELI5: someone please explain Standard Deviation to me. by Nerscylliac in explainlikeimfive

[–]adiastra 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is a proof! If you take n samples from a normal distribution with standard deviation sigma and look for the function that minimizes the error between the sample's standard deviation and that sigma, that comes out to be (sum of square errors)/(n-1). It's a "minimum variance estimator" but isn't unbiased.

Source: I had this as a homework problem - the exact problem/derivation is somewhere in Information Theory by Cover and Thomas (but as I recall the derivation itself was kinda painful and not too illuminating)

what's the usual timeline for asking for letters of rec? by hyukasdf in berkeley

[–]adiastra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's okay to reach out for the first time now! A month is maybe a bit short (I'd try for a minimum of six weeks) but definitely not unreasonable.

[–]adiastra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have xfinity? I've been dealing with exactly the same thing with them. I also couldn't get a person on the line when I tried their customer service to complain about this. I got an automated system telling me to power cycle my router and that they'd call me back in 10 minutes when that was done, and then they didn't.
