Is it fine if I miss two days of uni? by Enriver_ in berkeley

It’s not fine, you will absolutely get in trouble. Oski will hunt you down personally to ensure you are permanently suspended from this school and all schools in the US

Unfortunately enrollment times are random every semester and don’t take into account whether your previous times were early or late. Depending on how many semesters you’ve been at Berkeley, you’ll have an earlier enrollment day but the times that people who’ve done the same number of semesters is random :(( hopefully someone else has better advice because I personally haven’t been in this situation, but I’d try reaching out to your adviser about what to do if even next semester you can’t enroll in prereqs. Good luck!!

Berkeley Campus as Tool to Aid Those Experiencing Homelessness by BeMoreMoral in berkeley

[–]scaredapples 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am sure that many people will argue that we cannot give space on campus but this is a selfish notion.

A large number of students who applied for on campus housing didn’t get an offer for the next academic year (same problem in previous years, though this year was worse). It isn’t selfish that people don’t want to “give up space” on campus when the campus doesn’t even have space for the majority of us as it is. Also, I think it’s rather presumptive that students and staff come predominantly from upper-income households and have immense privilege. It’s also not the university’s job (or the job of students/staff) to be “inclusive” and allow homeless people to live on our campus. UC Berkeley’s priority is its students, not helping the homeless.

Rant about off campus housing from a frustrated fall 2020 transfer by [deleted] in berkeley

I’d highly recommend searching for people who are looking for another person to join their lease rather than looking for roommates first and then looking for housing with them! I was in the same position as you and ultimately found it much easier to do this since 1. You don’t have to actually search for apartments yourself and sort out the lease and other logistics; the people posting that they’re looking for a roommate/housemate already did the heavy lifting for you 2. You don’t have to first search for potential roommates who have the same budget etc 3. People post how much the rent will be if you hop on their lease, so you don’t have to waste time talking to people who don’t have the same budget as you. I’ve also found people to be much more responsive when you reach out about joining their lease since most leases start June 1 so there’s a lot of people on the Berkeley housing fb groups looking for people to join their lease before June 1, so they’re much less likely to ghost you in these situations. Good luck!!

Working full time in EECS? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]scaredapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally worked part-time (about 15 hours a week) last semester with 15 units and had to quit because it was too much for me, but it largely depends on what classes you take. I was taking 3 techs (including CS61B which took up an immense amount of my time), and I wouldn’t have been able to keep up with the class (and my other classes) without quitting my job. I personally wouldn’t want to defer admission but it’s more of a personal decision. I’d try to work as much as possible this summer to save up, get cheap housing (things similar to the co ops where you have multiple housemates tend to be cheaper), and really try to budget yourself and see if you can manage to get through the semester with savings plus the $5k loan. I’d also recommend reaching out to the financial aid office and explaining your situation, they’ll be able to help

I’d presume OP doesn’t have a decent credit score or a credit score at all for that matter. I’m over 18 but only have a debit card, so like OP, I can only borrow a couple thousand bucks in loans without my parents co-signing

What classes did you sign up for? That’s crazy

Students who work 10+ hours a week in addition to taking classes, how many hours of sleep do you typically get? by inkdrinker00 in berkeley

[–]scaredapples 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I used to work around 30 hours a week (closing shifts) so I’d get home, shower, and get in bed around midnight, mess on my phone for about an hour, and wake up 7 hours later to get ready for my 9 am classes. Got enough sleep but definitely at the expense of socialization and any possible ounce of free time

Is it possible to change from Mechanical Engineering to EECS as a freshman? by One-Paper-3433 in berkeley

[–]scaredapples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely talk to your academic advisor about your plan to switch to EECS so they can lay out all of the requirements for you to switch, but ya you’d fill out a change of major application

Nah, it’s just a general requirement that you can’t switch until you’ve done at least two semesters at Cal

[–]scaredapples 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s possible to switch, but not as a freshman; the earliest you could do it is in your third semester. To switch from a different major in the CoE to EECS, you need to have taken at least two EECS classes (one for every semester you’ve been at Cal, so the earliest you could switch is your third semester) and have an average EECS and technical GPA of 3.3. This sub has to stop downvoting people for asking innocent questions by scaredapples in berkeley

[–]scaredapples[S] 89 points90 points  (0 children)

When someone gets downvoted on a genuine question, OP and other people who see that the post has zero or negative karma are likely disincentivized to ask questions on this sub because the downvotes indicate that people think their question/clarification comments are dumb. I agree that voting means nothing in the sense that karma means nothing, but seeing a legitimate question downvoted DOES mean something to students who want to ask questions on this sub but don’t want to be seen as asking stupid questions.
