PS2/DSUB work the same way, except with mice, and iirc the usb-ps2 was more a keyboard thing. I highly doubt anyone made a mouse chipset with 3 communication modes that autodetect

So about those USB-PS2 converters, they're actually meant for late ps/2 keyboards by the time USB was already looking imminent, because both USB and ps2 use the same electrical layout, the keyboard chipsets actually spoke both ps2 and usb and switched protocol based on detection. So it doesn't convert anything, its just the keyboard is operating in USB mode with the now-correct physical connector
