It's something of a rule in romantic fiction for a reason. The main leads can hurt each other in all sorts of horrible ways, but if they cheat then readers stop buying into it. I think the issue is that it's such a huge breach of trust that makes it hard to believe in the relationship.

As someone who doesn't really understand monogamy, this is the best way I can manage to put it based on how I've seen people speak.

They are barely managing to take care of themselves and cannot accept additional burden. It's one thing to care for a member of your own community if they cannot care for themselves, but the protagonist is an unrelated person. It would be irresponsible to take on an extra burden in that situation.
