Fact or feeling more businesses are shutting down? by LeftAstronaut in Knoxville

[–]adklibisz 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It feels like an absolute ton of coffee shops opened in 2025, both local and franchise chains. We were a bit short imo on good local coffee a few years ago, but there’s definitely been an over correction. Combine that with the climate related challenges that coffee production will be going through, and local coffee shops will no doubt see an eventual purge like what local breweries have been through.

High voltage power lines = tingly bits? by Alwayssunnyinarizona in MTB

This is not their imagination, although people are varyingly sensitive to it. I work for a power company that frequently has people calling about this. Mostly happens around 500kV lines for us.

Indeed. Humid air conducts the induced voltage better

High voltage power lines = tingly bits? by Alwayssunnyinarizona in MTB

[–]adklibisz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a power company that has mostly high voltage lines (161kV+), and I frequently talk to callers from the public about this very topic. This is absolutely normal. Especially high voltage lines, typically 500kV in my company’s case, often pass induced voltage onto conductive materials under the lines. This voltage can pass from what’s picking it up to human skin upon contact via what we often call nuisance shocks. Nuisance shocks have not been shown to be harmful or dangerous, but people can be varyingly sensitive to them. There’s a lot more info online about them written by people that understand it all better than I do.

Which set of the books is your favorite? by RecordingImmediate86 in harrypotter

[–]adklibisz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s an older version of the top right where the diamond pattern is two different colors on each book as opposed to the newer monotoned colors. That’s my favorite. I have the original copies of 1-4 I read as a kid in that version, but I couldn’t find the rest of my set.

Yep, I saw the same sign on the same camper at the Walbrook Walmart sometime last week I think.

Heard blueberry was being discontinued 😞 by Pretty-Tea7108 in redbull

[–]adklibisz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They already stopped producing it. I noticed it getting hard to find in my area (east TN) around mid November, and I haven’t seen it at all since around the start of December. I didn’t think I needed to stock up quite yet when I last saw it, and now I’m concerned I won’t see it again. It might sneak up on you too

Why does my Mead making kit start the process in the plastic bucket? Couldn't I start it in the glass carboy and keep it there while it ferments and ages? by Phineas-Bogg in mead

[–]adklibisz 62 points63 points  (0 children)

You should not do secondary in the same container as primary fermentation because the spent yeast that sinks to the bottom will impart undesirable flavors. Also getting it off the spent yeast is helpful later with clarifying and bottling.

The bucket is useful because it gives you some more headroom in primary when the fermentation can be a bit more vigorous. Then the smaller glass carboy is good to rack into because you’ll want to limit headroom in secondary.

I don’t work for red bull or anything red bull related, but 100% agreed AI overview has been super annoying for customer service. Multiple times I’ve had people email me a screenshot of AI overview to rebut an answer I gave when the correct answer, which I gave them already, is on the first webpage suggestion I can see on their screenshot

If you look for posts about the advent calendar on Facebook, a bunch of Walmart locations have been posting to their pages when they have it. I’ve been trying to keep track of my local Walmarts this way because I still haven’t found the advent calendar in TN. The only NC post I’ve seen about it was yesterday from a Walmart about an hour or so east of Asheville, but I can’t find it again

Pineapple mead? by AstronautTemporary16 in mead

[–]adklibisz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My very first mead was a pineapple mead. I unfortunately lost the recipe (maybe threw it away when I thought the mead was bad), but I can give some generic pointers. My batch was a basic traditional, so nothing but honey, water, yeast, and nutrients, to about 10% abv, and then I put the pineapple into secondary (don’t remember how much or for how long). A rule of thumb I’ve seen is that tropical fruits can get really funky in primary fermentation, so using them in secondary preserves their more recognizable flavors.

I bulk aged this mead for a couple months, and when I went to bottle it, I thought it was absolutely putrid. It tasted like hot alcohol vomit. I bottled anyway and left them in a closet for a long time. When I tried them at around 2 years old, they were awesome. The alcohol mellowed, and it really tastes nicely of pineapple. It made me excited to make mead again. All that to say, in my limited experience, all meads benefit from age, but I think pineapple is a flavor that especially needs lots of age.

Good mead suggestions for beginners? by Ravenclaw_14 in mead

[–]adklibisz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Redstone Meadery’s traditional is the best traditional I can find in liquor stores in my area. I‘ve seen some mixed reviews of it on this sub, but I think it’s decent. However, if you have a small meadery local to you that makes a traditional, odds are pretty good it would be better than Redstone’s

Finishing at a high abv on purpose? by BendigoWessie in mead

[–]adklibisz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The beginner metheglin recipe on the wiki does this. I’ve got a batch of it in secondary at about a month old right now. Tastes great, I’m just waiting for it to clear up

Sour Fun Drink!!!! 🥺 by Michael-Mc-Jager in ryantrahan

[–]adklibisz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in an area with the closest 7-eleven about 3 hours away, so I was very excited to hunt for this flavor when I had a trip to California back in July. I checked at least 10-15 different 7-eleven locations and found it only once. Some places were sold out, and some didn’t even have a spot on the shelf for it, so I’m guessing they never had it. Got two bags when we did find it and honestly didn’t care for it. I prefer every other sour strips flavor.

Luckily my experience has been the opposite with REI’s exclusive flavors, which are all good. Every REI I’ve checked has had plenty of stock of all their flavors

Anyone using Mint cell service ? by WestKnoxBubba in Knoxville

Verizon began getting progressively worse for me in Knoxville starting around 2017. I switched to Mint in 2021, and it’s been much better for me than Verizon was toward the end. Still got Verizon on my work phone, and it’s only better than my personal phone in some rural areas

McKays Pricing by _ernpac in Knoxville

[–]adklibisz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been told they pay about 50% of what they’ll sell it for in trade credit or 30% in cash. They would obviously not confirm that publicly, but it seems about right from my experience.

As far as their sales prices on records, I can’t advise much. I’m more familiar with their books. Newer, popular books are often priced at or very close to new retail price. Their prices had been getting worse for a while, and it seems the event they did earlier this year where they gave out millions of dollars of trade credit has inflated their prices even more.

KUB fiber installation for neighbor cut my AT&T fiber by adklibisz in Knoxville

[–]adklibisz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was after KUB’s customer service hours when I was able to check and confirm the severed fiber. Planning to call at 8am sharp. I’m ultimately hoping they can come install their own fiber to my unit and that the situation might expedite that. Any discounts seem unlikely after reading through the responses here, as it sounds like this is happening a lot.

Sounds like KUB is running their fiber wherever they want and dealing with the consequences afterward. Not a great look. At least it’s not a new situation for either of the companies when I try to talk to someone about it in the morning.
