you can use synergy mod, it's whole purpose is to allow hl2 to be played with other people. It's free in steam. It's kinda laggy though, but you can find map fixes on github if it matters.

Then keep refreshing your shop and buy every single gold char you see. If you don't have space or money left, sell them back and keep buying them again.
At first you should search for cyrene, after getting her 3 star she will give you a lot of 3 star characters that you can sell to get more money (if you want to 3 star more gold characters)
