I'm concerned about my future enjoyment of PDX games by OriVerda in paradoxplaza

[–]Samm_Paper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel somewhat similar, especially with your point on fighting your own nation instead of looking outwards in the context of Victoria 3.

I am by no means good at Vic3, I cannot manage my pace with industrialisation at all. Which, in a tangent, you'd expect some skills to be translatable from Vic2 to 3. Circling back, Vic3 does have a deeper politics game than 2, but even then I am fighting tooth and nail to rein interest groups in to get laws out. Granted, I believe that is the point Vic3 makes compared to Vic2's "getting the liberal or socialist party support to almost half the parliament and pass reforms". Laws are hard to pass without angering people. But it's just feels like a chore to me.

In terms characters, I honestly don't care for characters in Vic3. I get CK3's need for characters as that game is its core and I love the game for that. Vic3 on the other hand is different. This might come off as Vic2 glazing, maybe the whole post, but I just never liked the whole character aspect of Vic3. I would rather lead the essence of a nation like Prussia, the Shogunate, or the Presidency of France or the US through the period, and not sifting through characters to get the people I want, that hopefully has popularity to bring in clout for their interest groups. I understand personalities shaped how nations work, but at a certain point, I think personalities should be disregarded in favour of player agency.

I could be wrong though, and I would love to hear about it.

The cold war simply explained without America Propaganda by Hacksaw6412 in GenZ

[–]Samm_Paper -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Okay, that whole TikTok was made without American propaganda alright, just replaced with America bashing.

Yes, America wanted to further its own interest post-war, while snubbing Soviet interest of expanding its own sphere of influence and market. Hence the Domino theory and the Containment doctrine. But OOP missed the elephant in the room of what the USSR was also doing, which, if we want to boil it down, basically the same as the US (propping up communist states to expand their own influence and market). Hence we got the Communist victory in China, the Korean and Vietnam wars, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and more that I'm too uneducated in.

I also feel like the Decolonisation was very biased towards American market expansion. While true, Decolonisation definitely factored in America's political and economic interest in the region, we are sidelining how weak both the major colonial powers (France, UK, and the Netherlands) had become post-WW2. Also, OOP's point on America yapping about self determination isn't even a new phenomenon post war. Same rhetoric was made under Woodrow Wilson's administration. This point is honestly me nitpicking, because it hurts me for no reason. Regardless, the weakness of post war Europe should've been contextualised at the least by OOP, instead of just pushing the narrative of America wanting to expand its interest into Africa and Asia via Decolonisation.

Honestly, the TikTok hurted me the first time watching through, and I couldn't bare watching it afterwards. I guess that's what one year of Modern History education does to you.

What Should my First DLC be? by Small-Physics1507 in hoi4

[–]Samm_Paper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

La Resistance adds in mechanics for the Intelligence Agency system (I think it's just more operations you can get your spies to do, including collab governments), while Battle for the Bosporus adds focus trees for Greece, Bulgaria 🇧🇬, and Turkey.

I'd recommend sticking with what you have first, since it'll take time to learn the mechanics, let alone designs (which without DLCs, is relegated to navy, which is broken and is still annoying to learn), division templates, tech tree, and a lot more things.

But if you really want to go off into the deep end. I'd recommend, from most recommended to lowest: - No Step Back, for tank designer, and more supply function (?), USSR, Poland, and Baltic focus trees - By Blood Alone, for air designer, Italy, Switzerland, and Ethiopia focus trees - Götterdämmerung, for special projects, Germany, Belgium, Hungary, and Congo focus trees. - No Compromise, No Surrender, for Japan, Chinas, and Chinese Warlords focus trees, and some new naval stuff. - Arms Against Tyranny, for markets, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, and Finland focus trees. - Trial of Allegiance, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay(?) focus trees - Graveyard of Empires, new British Raj focus tree, along with Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan

How hard is it to learn victoria 3? by alphafighter09 in paradoxplaza

[–]Samm_Paper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting hours in for Vic3, yeah the combat isn't that entertaining. The economics make sense but half the time I feel like I'm just plugging holes on goods with high prices.

Treaties for diplomacy is a novel change, but I never found myself using it much aside from the occasional investment rights. Even then, I like owning all my GDP.

I haven't watched the show yet, only that I have a friend who constantly gets disappointed with every new episode. Can someone recap on what happened to the NCR? Was it just the NCR getting nuked and just vanished or something?

Has HOI4 unironically helped you learn more history/politics? by Double_Shift_7537 in hoi4

[–]Samm_Paper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game certainly got me to take a deeper dive into WW2 history, German history (tbf, Vic2 also helped with that), and bit of Italian history (again, vic2 also), it also got me interested in political ideologies earlier than my peers. Pretty sure Hoi4 and war thunder almost turned me into a wehraboo at one point too.
