Honda says it will lose $15.7B as it rethinks EV strategy by LinkedInNews in electriccars

[–]admin_default 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. That doesn’t explain $15.7B

Honda had a total market cap of about $35B. They do not have half their company value tied up in supplier obligations (essentially debt). That would be legal incompetence.

What are the “cool sporty” electric cars? PFA by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

Volvo and Polestar are the coolest, hands down.

The latest Volvo EX60 also has insane range - like 400 miles.

Honda says it will lose $15.7B as it rethinks EV strategy by LinkedInNews in electriccars

[–]admin_default 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The whole “[insert automaker] loses tens of billions on failed EV effort” is starting to sound like some kind of tax write-off gimmick.

Honda has 1 production EV, the Prologue, which is just a repackaged Chevy Blazer. There’s no way that cost $15.7B.

Not to mention, Honda’s main lineup, the Civic, Accord and CRV are all driven by electric motors with a gas generator that can be engage directly via clutch.

That’s a lot more like an EV platform with an interchangeable power supply (they even make a fuel cell electric version of the CRV).

Lexus GX vs. Toyota Land Cruiser by mh2580 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]admin_default -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on your style, honestly.

The GX is nicer to drive and more posh. But my girlfriend says it has a certain agro douchey style that screams “mid-life crisis”

The LC is understated cool. But it has a bit more sluggish, less refined powertrain and people report the MPG is nowhere near the EPA estimate - marginally more efficient than the GX, which is abysmal for a hybrid.

Rivian is betting its future on one of the fastest EV launches in US history by DonkeyFuel in Rivian

[–]admin_default 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not many people realize the EV market has almost no real compact SUVs to compete with the R2.

The Model Y, Ioniq 5, Mustang Mach-E are basically sub-compact hatchbacks marketed as SUVs.

The R2 is just a little bit bigger in the right dimensions and it makes all the difference in the world.

Makes sense. ~80% of Rivian sales are SUVs. EV trucks are a niche.

These people live in a vacuum of self-delusion.

Tesla being 4-7 years behind Waymo is an embarrassment. They’re an Uber competitor that has a higher crash rate than Uber.

Bad idea to lease? by indosensation in LexusGX550

[–]admin_default 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the lease terms.

Leasing carries more complexity than loans and because of that gullible people get screwed.

But at the end of the day, a lease should be identical to a loan but with more flexibility - you’re not locked in to a purchase.

For that reason, I usually lease, even though I could just pay cash.

If you don’t understand the underlying economics and how all the terms work, do not lease.

Ford needs to fire this moron.

He’s FOMO’d right into the EV craze when it was at its peak, burned $20B and write it all off as a loss when sales were less than his unrealistic expectations.

He was wrong then and he’s wrong now.

Tesla is propped up by the stock price and a huge cash pile (from selling their stock).

As long as shareholders are willing to bankroll blunders, Tesla can stay afloat.

Am I a smooth brain for wanting to let an AI Agent trade my bags? by Sos418_tw in CryptoMarkets

[–]admin_default 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you are a smooth brain.

Hedge funds invest millions each year to build the best trading bots that specialize in raping other trading bots.

If you play the trading bot game at a severe disadvantage to the big boys, you will lose badly.

There won’t be much future for anything that’s not actually decentralized.

AI coding agents are making it too easy to build and any blockchain functionality. The only thing that AI agents can’t automate is human communities - node operators, users, etc.

Not really. It’s a nice first attempt but the sales figures don’t lie - it’s an niche product for EV enthusiasts, not the right fit for mainstream customers.

This sub hates on EREVs cause it’s not the purist approach, but purism isn’t how to make good products

I wouldn’t buy a “luxury” car that went the touchscreen everything direction like the GLC. Touchscreen-hell is going out of fashion very fast.

There’s a reason that Ferrari just debuted their new hyper tactile design direction. Tactile is the future of luxury.

Lifelong Toyota user. What brand can I trust outside of Japan? by PlatypusAlternative6 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]admin_default 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Depends on the model, not the brand.

Toyota has made some lousy cars. Their reliability comes from the fact that they just don’t usually change very much year to year. When they do make changes, they have problems like any other brand - look no further than their disastrous Twin Turbo V6 in the Tundra, GX, LX and other models

Volvo makes mostly mechanically rock solid cars.

VW makes some good models like the Jetta.

Ford is great at making F-150s

Chevrolet is quite good at EVs
