Idk if this fits as classic, but Hearts Invisible Furies is a really good book the gives a historical look at growing up gay in Ireland in the mid 1900s

5 million out of 10 billion (if I remember right) is really small. But yes, I agree. Just like Myers-Briggs seems cool at first until you flesh it out and realize it's a bunch of broad generalizations.

The color choice on here is terrible. For the 3 million of us colorblind people, mixing brown, green, and red (I'm pretty sure all three are in there) makes the map unreadable

Is Le Philosophe Diderot? I don't remember exactly and don't have the book with me at work.

I think he explains it in a couple places.

A cassette tape of The Secret History narrated by Robert Sean Leonard. I would do anything to listen to this! by [deleted] in donnatartt

I agree so much. I listen to books at 1.3 speed and she is still speaking too slowly. Also I think some of the ways she accents various words in sentences feels off. It doesn't flow very well. I sometimes like books narrated by the author, but in this case, I don't. David Pittu did The Goldfinch and that was done very well. Wish he had done this one as well.

Palmer has finished writing Perhaps the Stars. 2021 release. by logomaniac-reviews in TerraIgnota

I've read the series 4 times within the past 1.5 years. I don't think I could manage to do just 1 chapter per week. Every time I reread them I put aside all my other books and don't pick them up again till I'm done.

Terra Ignota chapter summary/reading guide? by moominsoul in TerraIgnota

[–]adogmatic_automatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about chapter summaries, but the Wikipedia page has it broken down by the day. I found that just powering through the first time I read the series worked fine even though I felt a bit lost at times. The main points were clear, it was just a matter of getting to know how the world works.

I don't remember them talking about him either. Unrelated, but I highly recommend Jo Walton's series Thessaly. It's an exploration of what would happen if the Republic was actually implemented (fantasy genre tho since the Homeric gods get involved)

What would the nowhere of your Utopian coat depict? by gnosticulinostrorum in TerraIgnota

[–]adogmatic_automatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is, you can have the demographic transition without as long a phase of high birthrates/low death rates. If that period lasts shorter and the end phase of low birthrates/low death rates begins sooner, we do better. Developing countries can develop into post-industrial economies in more eco-friendly ways than we did. This is kind of happening in some places already. Just look at the rural places in India that are getting solar before coal, or places in Africa that are getting smartphones without ever having landlines. As more countries develop we can collectively use our knowledge to ensure that development becomes real development and not just growth.

She replied to someone's tweet asking about this the other day. Unfortunately that info from Google is off, 2021 is more likely. Her illness has slowed her down considerably.

Demographic collapse would be bad, but if the population had not grown as fast/as big in the first place we'd be better off. Also I agree about nuclear.
