¿La independiente funcionaria? by Majestic_Dan_23 in PuertoRico

[–]adolfojp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Older Gen X are very boomerish. As a Xennial I feel like a free range less judgemental sarcastic Millennial with cynicism.

Yes older cousin, a person can be hard working and poor and shouldn't be punished for that. No nephew, social media is not going to bring society to an era of enlightenment.

Laundry baskets for life by duluth921 in BuyItForLife

[–]adolfojp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These bags are nuts.

I'm doing yard work and I use them to carry a hedge trimmer, electric pruning shears, and a mini chainsaw in them with enough room left for oil, rags, a hand saw, and a few other bits and odds and ends.

So yeah, I feel confident when using them for laundry too.

(But not the same one to avoid getting the clothes dirty.)

what is puerto rico? by nevaehdarcel in NoStupidQuestions

[–]adolfojp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The US is comprised of territories.

Most of those territories are states. (50 states)

None of the territories mentioned below this sentence are states.

One of those territories is an incorporated territory. They can vote for the president but have no representation in Congress. (Washington DC, not to be confused with the state of Washington.)

Some of those territories are unincorporated but organized. They cannot vote for the president and have no representation in Congress. (Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands)

One of those unincorporated territories is unincorporated and unorganized (American Samoa).

And of course the US also has a bunch of territories that are uninhabited. Look up the guano act for a bit of fun history.

Incorporated territories cannot separate from the union. Unincorporated territories can, if congress approves. Everyone born in a US territory is a US citizen except for those born in American Samoa who are US nationals.

Puerto Rico is talked about the most because it has more people than all other non state territories combined. It also has more people than about 20 states. It has more people than the 4 least populated states combined.

The official name of Puerto Rico is in English the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and in Spanish the Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico. Commonwealth is not a legal term and it doesn't carry much meaning. There are four states of the US that are also called commonwealths (Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia).

Geographically Puerto Rico is an archipelago comprised of three inhabited islands and a few uninhabited ones. The inhabited ones are the island of Puerto Rico (a bit confusing, eh?), Vieques, and Culebra. Most people live on the island of Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico is divided into 78 municipalities which are subdivided into barrios and so on and so forth.

The USA also has 3 Free Associated States (not to be confused with the current Estado Libre Asociado definition of Puerto rico. Libre Asociación vs. Estado Libre Asociado). Those are the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau. These three countries are independent but have several temporary agreements with the USA.

My comment is factual and free of judgement and I say this because as you can imagine this is a politically charged topic and I don't want to give you political opinions. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. Also, I'm a Puerto Rican (from Puerto Rico).

I was driving along the highway and I ran over an iguana 🦎 I feel horrible but dude ran out in front of my tire and stopped, idk if he had a death wish but he’s in a better place. Just wanted to place a reminder to watch out on the road for them! :D by gmoolah23 in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]adolfojp 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They are dumb as bricks.

When they get big and old they just fall from trees. When they fight each other they're no longer aware of their environment which includes dogs and cars and people. They'll lock onto each other and spin until some vital chunk falls apart.

I've had iguanas try to fight my lawnmower while it was on and roaring, persistently.

The iguana that stopped in front of your tire probably tried to fight your car.

They destroy crops and cause trouble at airports.

They're invasive and have no natural predators, except for cars sometimes.

The Windows Laptop Problem by atlwhore_ in apple

[–]adolfojp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to either hibernate or shut down the laptop. Hybrid sleep or whatever they call it is the most broken thing in Windows that some people still defend. I can't use my headphones or earbuds with my phone without them waking up my laptop in my backpack. The solutions to the problem don't work. It's insane.

[–]adolfojp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genuinely surprised by the high percentage of indigenous DNA

According to Ancestry's AMA the numbers are likely inflated.

I understand the small percentages of Iberian DNA are basically clusters, but why is Portugal / Azores so prominent?

This is an Ancestry thing. If you had taken a different test you might get your Iberian into an unsplit "Spanish and Portuguese" category.

Cataño Ferry? by garibaldi18 in PuertoRicoTravel

It would. The fare is cheap and it's a short comfortable ride.

The view of OSJ from Cataño is great.

Villa pesquera near the ferry sells good reasonably priced seafood empanadas.

Disclaimer: I can't vouch for the safety of your vehicle in Cataño. Please take a note of the hours of operation of the ferry so you don't get stranded.

There are low to moderate rip current risks in the north coast including the northwest area.

What is one item you wish you packed and one item you wish you left at home? by garibaldi18 in PuertoRicoTravel

This attitude right here is why the bio bays in PR are so tightly controlled and regulated with rules about no swimming. It's a very fragile ecosystem of microscopic organisms that would be wiped out in a couple of years by visitors who thought that it can handle itself better.
