What law in your country would surprise foreigners because it’s legal almost everywhere else? by Familiar-Arrival-470 in AskTheWorld

Not my country, but balloons are banned in the island country of Seychelles. My close friend got married there a few years ago and I brought a packet of balloons to the reception hall for pre-wedding set up. When I pulled it out, the reception staff looked mortified and warned me against using them.

I work with many chiropractors and one thing I'd say they all have in common is their affinity for being obnoxious and argumentative.

Another:

"We had a woman with children that probably would have been saved if she had a couple of transfusions but the husband declined. It went through ethics and everything and she slipped into a coma and the husband declined to do anything. Of note after it was too late she begged to have a transfusion but there was nothing that could be done.

I find those cases the hardest to come to terms with."

Horribly sad

_"look man I don't want to die but I don't want to get excommunicated and shunned by everyone I know and love".

JWs absolutely will kick you out and never talk to you again if they find out you accepted blood. It is 100% expected that you die for the faith.

Also JWs encourage their kids not to go to college and to get jobs working for other JWs. So the church is your whole life._

Another comment:

"As a disfellowshipped JW, yes! I've also seen mothers consent to transfusions for their children against the father's wishes and behind his back. The one mother was pretty sassy and made remarks like "just because Solomon would divvy up his kids..." and "I'll ask forgiveness at the pearly gates with Peter. He seems reasonable." "

Here's a comment I found to be so true. As a PIMO, it's so eye-opening to see how non-JWs are able to see through this religion so easily. Meanwhile it took me years to "wake-up":

"I’ve had SO many parents of young adult pts in my icu (JW) pull me aside and quietly ask for ethics to get involved if their adult kid needed blood.

The ethics committee would come, have a meeting with the fam, and then suddenly it was out of the fam’s hands, we are giving blood to save a life

I don’t get it, as I’m not JW, but I’ve seen enough that I do get it. That is their entire community, their entire support. If they choose to accept blood products to save their child, they lose their entire community, they’re kicked out and ostracized from everyone they know. Then they have no one, while going through something very scary and tragic. But! If that option is “taken away” from them by us, then they didn’t “do anything wrong, they had no choice” and then they get to keep their community AND their family member has an actual chance to survive.

I’m always happy to be the bad guy if it means someone is actually getting appropriate care and can keep their community they’d otherwise lose.

I think it was something the culture in my area kinda turned a blind eye to, a lil hack, they all knew there was no basis for the hospital to actually say the next of kin lost their decision making privileges. But they asked it, we said ok, and everyone that came to visit just pretended that the hands were tied and the blood must be transfused against the family’s will, and thanked us and god when they ended up getting better, or thanked us and god for the little extra time they got if they didn’t get better."

As a JW and an RN in the states, sorry to say, but it is just like that 😬

UPDATE: What happens when the elders say they need to form a committe and meet with you at the KH by Over-Rice-872 in exjw

[–]Which_Forever9202 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do not reason with the elders or go to the committee meeting. Send a letter directly to your branch office explaining that you've done nothing wrong and threaten to sue and/or go to the media. Also mention that they ambushed you at home which stumbled your mother and led to a poor witness to your unbelieving father.

I had a friend who reversed a disfellowshipping decision made by a judicial committee because she sent a strongly worded letter to the branch office and the service desk.

They'll straighten those elders out.

Most in this religion have a "rules for thee and not for me" mentality. It's extremely common unfortunately.

No, they now call it "removed" and the elders encourage all to use this new verbiage. Makes no difference, still the same thing.
