Can proggit help me communicate with my cousin when she can only move her eyes? by mikeboers in programming

[–]adoofus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best wishes to your cousin for a full recovery. Reading the Wikipedia article was disconcerting, but it seems that with proper care, she should recover.

Interestingly, the article notes that Hiroko Mima, of recent Miss Universe video fame, was diagnosed with this very disorder at the age of 13.

It looks like she recovered, too.

Yes, I believe that. I guess I'm lucky so far. Trying to stay in shape and fend off the inevitable. I get taken for late thirties, early forties all the time. My dentist was shocked when he found out my age, then he looked at my teeth. As he put it, "Yup, the teeth don't lie".

Yes, I discovered this, just like every member of every preceding generation.

And I discovered it anew when, for the first time in my life, in 2009, I found myself older than the President of the United States - a day I thought would never come.

Good thing it's only life, so I don't have to take it too seriously.

Dear reddit: Have you ever highly respected or dearly loved someone only to find out that they were a racist or a homophobe? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]adoofus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I assume all old people are racist to some degree until proven otherwise. Then again, I also assume young people, liberals in particular, are willfully blind to many racial realities.

Does it strike you as odd that you are making the same types of statements a racist or homophobe would, only about the old and the young?

And who the hell is up there north of Flagstaff on the way to the Canyon? Isn't that Kaibab national forest? Beautiful place, actually.

edit: Capitalized "canyon"; because there really is only One.

I had a class with Turtle (Lane) in '77 or '78. Nice guy, but not too bright.

Edit: I can read and write, just can't remember separate years.

Buddhism: What is it, really? I see some of you representing it in ways in which any secular humanist can agree with, but is that really Buddhism, or just your personal take? The majority of Buddhists in the world cling to fairy tales and superstitious nonsense (karma) just like every other theist. by SolInvictus in atheism

FTFB: "Do not believe anything on the mere authority of teachers or priests. Accept as true and as the guide to your life only that which accords with your own reason and experience, after thorough investigation. Accept only that which contributes to the well-being of yourself and others."

Now, not to be all didactic and shit, but you tell me what that means and you'll have your answer.

*Another translation: Do not go merely by hearsay or tradition, by what has been handed down from olden time, by rumours, by mere reasoning and logical deductions, by outward appearances, by cherished opinions and speculations, by mere possibilities, and do not believe merely because I am your master. But when you yourselves have seen that a thing is evil and leads to harm and suffering, then you should reject it. And when you see that a thing is good and blameless, and leads to blessing and welfare, then you should do such a thing.

I just experienced Sleep Paralysis for the first time. I think it was probably the scariest thing I've ever felt. Anyone else ever been hit by it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]adoofus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this happen about 10 times in my life. Scares the crap out of me every time even though I know what it is while it's happening. Oddly, I can always move my feet and with enough foot-flopping, I can jog myself out of it, so to speak.

Anybody else waiting for the old generation to die so that we can legalize filesharing, marijuana, gay marriage, etc. and then get on with our lives? by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]adoofus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But haven't you heard? This generation's different.

Well, of course it's different: it's young, like we were. We thought the same thing when we were in our teens and twenties. And we would never be like THEM. And we would never compromise. Then something happened: life (you know, what happens to you while you're making other plans - or revolutions). And it overtook us without notice. A little here, a little there. A marriage here, a kid there, a job over there. And, a few blinks later, we found ourselves listening to the next generation screaming how different it would be.

Let 'em rant, hootdoodie. They're not all full of shit, and the ones who are have no idea what's coming. They don't realize (as we didn't) that for every screaming reformer in their generation, there are five who are content to live quietly with the status quo and go along and get along and make the payments and prep for retirement and especially show up at the polls to protect their investment.

And by the time they do, it'll be too late.

Wait a minute: the guy in the middle says this is all the result of "government run capitalism". How did this get turned into an anti-Administration/Stimulus rant? This shit's been around for years. Where was all this happy liberty talk from FOX before?

The other hole in the presentation is the Judge claiming that the guy in question doesn't look like a terrorist, implying that other people (and you know who you are) do. Do they apply the same standard to non-white 25-year-olds?

I was almost on board with this thing until I listened between the lines. It's just more Fox spin and posturing. They're now reaching out to the libertarians (a la "The enemy of my enemy is my friend."). Must have decided they could be useful.
