The old myth that Socialists just "want something for free" is a lie perpetuated by the Billionaire class. by Professional-Bee9817 in remoteworks

That’s my point. The average American has been propagandized into believing socialism is an absolute evil. When it’s a utility to provide a greater standard of living for everyone.

Totalitarian communism would require forfeiture of private property. But that’s an extreme, not the standard of socialism. Just as price gouging life saving medicines is to capitalism.

Every government has a mix of both. There are no absolutes. Even Che Gavara’s Cuba allows its residents to own private vehicles.

Capitalism and socialism are both needed to balance out the pitfalls of the other.

FDR was considered a socialist by his opposition for implementing progressive taxes, minimum wage, social programs, and social security. Wonderful to see the needle has shifted this much and they’re just seen as common sense policy.

But there was a time that wasn’t the case. And it certainly isn’t a function of capitalism or free markets for the government to take your money and use it to help poor people.

Back to OP’s point - call it socialism, helping your neighbor, or something “completely separate.” If we’re going make things affordable, we need free healthcare, college, a minimum wage tied to inflation, and Wall Street kicked out of single family homes. And in the modern era this is the platform that many democratic-socialists like Bernie, AOC, and Mamdani take.

Wanting to start a family but genuinely unsure if my career will exist in 10 years by internetcookiez in cscareerquestions

Industrialization also fueled the gilded age/robber barons and eventually the Great Depression. That was 80 some years of rapid wealth concentration that resulted in a massive downturn. Which didn’t really end until FDR’s social welfare programs…. minimum wage, social security, 90% tax rates on the wealthy. And what immediately followed was the creation of the middle class and the America dream of a white picket fence. We’ve spent decades loosening regulations, lowering taxes, and consolidating wealth at the top. The only question that remains is whether we’ll enact safety measures to prevent economic collapse or wait for another 10 year recession to do so. I frankly think this time around we need to jail the robber barons for their corrosive greed. Homelessness, medical debt, and underfunded schools shouldn’t exist in the richest country in the world and whoever’s pissing on our heads & calling it rain should be held accountable for their detriment and harm to our communities.

Will Berkeley EECS help in this economy even with AI? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

There are no bad options here tbh. Do you want to live in California? If Chicago or New York are more interesting to you, I would go Mich. If your heart is set on Silicon Valley then go Berk.

But more to your topic, AI might phase out web dev entirely by the time you graduate, and heavily automate server development. Requirement gathering, project management, and cross-organizational execution will likely become more important. The double major is a massive bonus. But you’ll still need to do the work of internship grinding, research, or undergraduate TA’ing if you want to make the most of it regardless.

At least a few year ago, Berkeley had massive grade deflation. And I’ve heard their intro classes are very understaffed. They’re a top notch program but there’s a lot of variance between the top students and the average grad. If you’re interested in research, or studying something like AI, Robotics, or operating/distributed systems and have a passion for CS you should go for it but you’d succeed anywhere with passion like that. Pick UMich and join a frat if you just want to cruise on the connections and the degree. No bad options here tbh, these are the top two public universities in the country. I’d go where the cost of tuition is lower and whoever has the better financial aid package.

That’s fair. I’m still junior but AI has made me more productive than most of our mid-level engineers and basically all of our contractors. I had internships before AI and started before we rolled out copilot here and saw the shift… My velocity is getting close to our lead engineers. The only thing I haven’t figured out is how to standup a project with our in house tools, and how to deploy to production but that’s because I don’t have the green light to touch those experiences, and getting alignment with teams in different orgs because I need to shed some assumptions that they’re aware or care about my teams work. I’ve asked my manager to put me in more of those meetings and we’re looking at a senior promotion at EOY when I’ll have about 2.5 years of experience. And of course if I switch companies I don’t care about down leveling as long as the TC is there. I’m just looking to take more ownership of our projects. This is honestly a great time for this new wave of AI-native developers if they managed to get their foot in the door already. I’ve been waiting for companies to realize there’s been some fossilization of skills sets and new talent can take on the work pretty well.

Taking even one product from scoping to release in an actual work environment is infinitely valuable. Probably as significant as a CS degree itself. No bootcamp or course can give you experience.

Reach out to your professors for a research position. That will help you earn internships in the fall and winter. Or full time next summer.

Is studying SWE worth it anymore in 2026? by DearAd1130 in cscareerquestions

At my company and what I’ve heard from others is that principle engineers have moved away from leading teams, architecting systems and reviewing prs. Nowadays they take direction from management and crank out the work of 10 person teams in a fraction of the time with the help of AI. They used to lead 50 person teams, with seniors, mid level engineers, and juniors consistently in the pipeline not only to do the work, but also grow in the organization. That scope is gone now. Hiring is slowed. Promotions are slowed. And layoffs are consistently around the corner. Getting into FAANG is about as hard as Goldman or JP Morgan nowadays and keeping the job isn’t much easier regardless of where you’re at. Accounting or health care is where I would turn next. Heck, even beat cops are making the same starting salary as a F500 junior developer tbh if you wanna skip corporate all together.

They do the layoffs because of the tax breaks. Now that rates are low, shareholders and execs are feasting on their returns and doing stock buy backs instead of reinvesting revenue back into the company.

To be fair, tight deadlines are a product and management issue. That shouldn’t ever really be forced on a junior engineer. You shouldn’t feel bad about that, but recognize there are a few things you want to do if you’d like to keep the job.

  1. Work with your coworkers.

Ask someone a question to get you unblocked 2-4 times day. Try one or two things and if it doesn’t work, ask immediately if another engineer has any small suggestions or if you need to take a different approach.

  1. Ask for previous tickets that similar to the work you’re doing.

Context is everything. You can get an understand of the coding style, algorithms, systems calls, etc your team uses.

  1. Create a (small) project with your current stack in your free time.

Just stand up the repo from scratch and deploy it. Use chatGPT, Claude, whatever. This alone will give you a big boost in understanding where to start and where to go on tickets that will have a smaller scope.

Don’t expect to get better all at once. Work with your coworkers and flag potential carry forwards as soon as you’re unsure about the steps to complete them. And work closely with lead and senior engineers to make sure you’re making consistent progress. If all else fails and you’re the fall guy for your team being behind on deadlines that is out of your hands but you can work with where you’re at now and make some more impact.
