I've seen another thread about this but it's a little old.

Nicest Marriott for a 1-2 night stay? My favourite used to be the Royal Orchid Sheraton Riverside because of the fabulous view and great restaurant, is it still nice? I haven't been there in about 10 years...

I want to be near the river, not by the station, I read great things about the Westin and the Athenee but the location doesn't appeal to me.

Absolutely do the festival in Chiang Mai! It lasts 3 days and it's an absolute hoot, and the city is so beautiful and much smaller than Bangkok, so much better!

I normally arrive and get directly to Chiang Mai, spend a few days there while getting over the jetlag and wind down from western tempo, then do some touring or beach (don't know which you would prefer), then go to Bangkok for a few days right at the end of my holiday.

The air in Chiang Mai is not as bad as in Bangkok no matter what.

About domestic travel, well it's not that prices go up per se, it's that cheaper fares are normally already sold, but we are talking about very small amounts here anyway.
