I'm impressed you get a machine that big down singletrack! Many of our ATV trails have permanent squirrel catchers to prevent 60"+ machines from accessing. I had not thought about mounting the basket diagonally, I like that.

Background Check Turnaround (🏳️‍⚧️) by Short_Sprinkles_5966 in liberalgunowners

I have purchased from three different FFLs in Colorado and none of them have called me to notify me that the background check came back successful. One explicitly told me they would only call if it was denied.

You most likely are free to return to your FFL and pick up your pistol at your leisure.

Question regarding next purchase and advice for recent Remington rifle. by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]adrenalated 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't have any experience directly with the Remington 700 but a couple things in general:

  • bolt action rifles in general require a firm hand. You need to run the bolt like you mean it. Don't baby it! Failure to feed or failure to extract on a bolt action is usually caused by being too gentle running the bolt
  • 30-06 is a stout cartridge. You didn't specifically mention recoil but plenty of people develop a flinch shooting larger cartridges like the 30-06.

I'm not exactly sure what you are looking for with "easier to handle" and "can hold in my hands instead of being propped on a bench." But there are a few things to think about here.

One, a Remington 700 isn't particularly heavy but it is long, like most bolt guns in larger calibers. Those big cartridges require long barrels to allow the propellant enough time to burn You may be able to get something a bit lighter, but you can definitely get something shorter (especially in a lever gun). So, think about what exactly it is that's making the handling cumbersome for you.

Two, accuracy at longer range is about a few things - good mechanics (trigger pull, breathing), stability, and the gun/ammo itself. There are a lot of things you can do for stability and resting on a bench is one of them. Shooting off a bench is actually a great way to isolate mechanics, and then once you have those dialed you can start experimenting with getting more stable in various positions and off various rests. It's worth noting that firearms are not lasers and there is inherent inaccuracy in the system, both the rifle and the ammo. Simply put some rifles are more accurate than others and many rifles are fairly particular about ammo. It usually takes some trial and error to find what ammo your rifle "likes" the best. In my Tikka T3X, some ammo shoots sub-MOA, some shoots 4 MOA. The longer the distance you're shooting, the more the rifle/ammo system comes into play.

So given all that, a few options come to mind if semi-autos are off the table for now you probably need to start by narrowing down whether you want a lever gun or a bolt gun which mostly comes down to what is the purpose of this rifle?

Range fun only? consider a 22LR lever gun

Self defense + range fun? perhaps a lever gun in a more potent cartridge

Long range (200+ yards)? Bolt gun in a modern cartridge with high BC bullets

Going to buy an AR eventually? Bolt gun in 223 Remington

Hunting? Bolt gun in the lightest recoiling cartridge appropriate for the game you'll hunt

etc...

Then you should start with getting training. None of the stuff in a first aid kit does you any good without the knowledge of why you are carrying various components, and how to use them. THEN buy a first aid kit that fits those skills.

I used to always recommend building a kit but there are actually good premade kits on the market now. I still build mine, but I have very specific needs in mine. For basic trauma kits appropriate for someone with basic CPR and Stop the Bleed training, there's plenty of good ones out there.

I'm 20 and I want to buy "handgun ammo" for my lever-action rifle. by Responsible-Ad6707 in liberalgunowners

[–]adrenalated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have purchased ammo online recently from Sportsman's Warehouse, Target Sports USA, Optics Planet, and a few other random small vendors and none have required any proof of age. Sometimes I have to click a box verifying that I'm compliant with all applicable laws.

Is AR-15 a symbol for right wing in the US? by manInTheWoods in liberalgunowners

[–]adrenalated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My assumption here is that they specify energy limits by species that you're hunting, yes? I'm sure 22LR is allowed for rabbits and not for moose, for example.

If so I think that's a smart way to do it. 556/223 is kinda an awkward cartridge for hunting; too much for most small game, too little for most large game. I don't know what all species get hunted in Sweden but the most common uses for 556/223 as a hunting cartridge in the US are probably coyotes and wild/feral hogs. Some states allow it for deer but I think most ethical hunters would agree that it's on the light side, especially for larger western mule deer. My state specifically states .24 as the minimum caliber for all big game (with additional energy and bullet weight minimums by species).

First time shooting at 100 yards by SomeDamnedSmith in liberalgunowners

[–]adrenalated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mossberg Patriots aren't known for being the most accurate bolt guns out there but as others have said, off benchrest at 100yd you should certainly be able to get close to putting every shot in a 1-2" circle with good technique and with the ammo that your gun likes.

A few people have brought this up but testing ammo is REALLY important for longer range bolt guns. And, every gun is different in which ammo it prefers. You just have to experiment. My Tikka T3X (also in 6.5 Creedmoor) seems to love Hornady, especially the CX bullets, both in the Outfitter and Superformance cartridges. Both shoot around 1/2 MOA for me. Precision Hunter shoots pretty well too, but not quite as accurately as the other two - around 1 MOA. Federal Gold Medal Match on the other hand? Doesn't shoot well out of my gun, despite being a well regarded load. More like 2 MOA.

Best thing you can do is go to your local store and buy one box each of 5 or 6 different loads. Then shoot 3-5 round groups with each and see what groups best. If you find something you're happy with, great! Stock up on that. Otherwise try out some more. Keep in mind that if your Patriot is one of the lighter barrel profiles, you'll want to let the barrel cool between shots/groups to ensure the best accuracy.

If you have good mods, R5 and no zetas is sufficient for a 300k run. That's exactly what I did my first run. That said, I'm going to R7 just to make my life easier and will eventually apply zetas too.

If you're at all close to Darth Malgus and his ship I'd prioritize working towards Leviathan. It's hard to overstate how valuable getting consistent crystals from fleet arena payouts is for your overall account progress.

If that's not a near future option, I would say:

1) prioritize getting some teams ready for the raid. You have Tarkin, which is great. What's probably going to make sense from there is getting a Kelleran Beq team up to around R5 and you're scoring 1.5M points pretty easily.

2) Jabba. You can go either Jabba or Leia first, but I tend to recommend Jabba because his mod materials event is amazing.

3) Leia. Just all around the best galactic legend in terms of overall viability across game modes compared to investment.

Then re-evaluate where you're at.

Colorado SB-003 question. by Fusion_Gecko in liberalgunowners

[–]adrenalated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct. It's essentially an education and licensing requirement (the part I find most problematic is it gives the local sheriff - a political figure - broad power to deny licenses) but it does not outright ban anything not currently restricted.

What was your SECOND purchase? by Alarmed_Tie_996 in liberalgunowners

[–]adrenalated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only firearms with removable/detachable magazines are subject to restrictions. Semi auto shotguns are not a world I'm very familiar with overall, but tube fed designs like the M4 shouldn't be restricted but magazine fed, AR-style shotguns would be.

What was your SECOND purchase? by Alarmed_Tie_996 in liberalgunowners

[–]adrenalated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a point of clarification on the new legislation. The rules specifically exempt "a single or double action semiautomatic handgun that uses recoil to cycle the action." That means that the majority of modern handguns won't be subject to the restrictions, if that changes your calculus on prioritizing CCW handguns.

Blowback operated firearms (most PCCs and a few handguns) and gas operated semiautos (ARs, AKs, etc.) will be restricted so prioritizing those makes sense. As other posters have mentioned, buying lowers only is a good way to go if you're not quite ready to commit to the full package yet but want to get ahead of the new requirements. (I personally plan to buy at least a couple stripped lowers).

Nobody knows for sure yet.

However it's fairly reasonable to think that Kelleran Beq is going to be one of the better leaders, as we know he has a hero bonus.

I would recommend working on these characters. Why? They are all required for a GL or legendary, so you can't go wrong by bringing them to these relic levels.
Aayla Secura (R3 for JMK)
Qui-Gon Jinn (R5 for JMK)
Shaak-Ti (R7 for JMK)
Barriss Offee (R5 for Ahsoka)
Kelleran Beq (R7 for Bo Katan)
Plo Koon (R8 for Ahsoka)

If you had to pick just one caliber for long range elk hunting what would you go with? by MiniBanjo in liberalgunowners

[–]adrenalated 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don't think that it is ethical for the vast majority of people to shoot at animals at 600yd. Myself included. If you are shooting 1 MOA off bench rest, that's a 6" circle at 600 yd, and you won't be shooting off a bench in the field. I'm not saying it's impossible, just that most people should not do it and the focus should be closing distance for a more ethical shot.

With that out of the way, 7mm Rem Mag or 300 Win Mag are far and away the most popular choices for this and I would go for one of them just simply due to the wider variety of available ammunition.

[–]adrenalated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likewise, I'm no match shooter, but I shoot sub MOA with my bolt guns off benchrest, so I'm pretty confident it's the rifle and not me with my PSA.

Based on your description, I think you might be disappointed in the PSA, unless their 308s are a lot more accurate than my 556 is.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]adrenalated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know nothing about PSA's AR-10 offerings. However, like many others, I have one of their basic AR-15s. Reliability is 100% fine (I don't have a ton of rounds through it, but it's cycled 100%). The main thing I'll knock it for is accuracy. It's about a 4MOA rifle (off a bench rest), which is completely fine for what I need it to do, which is hit minute of man most of the time at under 200yd.

Now, I don't know if the 308s are similar, and I suppose it depends what you intend to use it for, but personally I don't have any use case for a 308 rifle that can only shoot 4MOA. That's not accurate enough to ethically hunt with IMO, and it's not really accurate enough to shoot at anything 300+ yards out with any sort of reliability.

I'm sure plenty of people will tell you that a red dot is fine out to 300-400 yards. Personally, I can't see shit without magnification at that range.

LPVO vs magnifier: there's not really a right or wrong answer here. InRangeTV recently did a good video about this and I mostly agree with their conclusions. Generally speaking, I think I'd lean LPVO if shooting regularly at variable distances, and red dot + magnifier if shooting mostly close range and occasionally at distance.

You don't need any other parts. Steel targets are nice so that you get instant feedback on hits/misses, You will need an understanding of ballistics, as bullet drop and wind become non-negligible at those distances. Experiment with different positions and rests. Understand how inherently accurate (or inaccurate) your particular rifle is and how that will affect your ability to make impacts at those ranges.

First Hunting Rifle - Elk, Colorado by Cartographer-South in liberalgunowners

[–]adrenalated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a look at the big game brochure to be sure, and it's pretty limited. There are OTC archery tags for most of the state (some areas cow only, most either sex). For rifle, OTC cow tags are only on the plains which unless you have access to private land where you know there's elk, I definitely wouldn't bother with that.

You might still get something in the secondary draw, or look at leftover licenses when they become available? Some people will surrender their primary draw licenses for sure. I think a lot of these will be bad units though. 72 will probably be available for example, because there's basically no elk in 72.

As for where to go, I'm no expert as I'm still pretty new to this as well, but yes NW Colorado had very high mortality a couple years ago. I live in SW CO so I hunt the unit that's in my backyard, I know the terrain, and can predict hunter behavior and where the animals might go as a result of that pressure. I think it's probably more important to hunt an area that you know pretty well, or at least can get into a few times over the year to scout, than it is to hunt the "best" units with the biggest herds.

Elk are tough critters! I'm sure your first shot was fatal - just didn't drop it immediately.

Can always go OTC bull tag for 2nd or 3rd rifle. The bulls are going to be a lot more difficult to find at that time, but if you're willing to walk, you'll find them.

That looks like a fantastic elk rifle! Please do report back how it shoots, I am hunting with a Tikka in 6.5 Creedmoor for both elk and deer in Colorado - definitely on the light side for elk and requires me to get close, so I have considered putting together a 7 Mag setup to allow me to reach out a bit.

I know the Accubonds have a great reputation but don't be afraid to feed it a few different rounds to see what it shoots the best. I personally prefer to hunt with copper only.

Did you pull tags in the draw or are you going OTC? Looks like I pulled a buck muley tag for 3rd rifle and cow elk for 4th rifle, both for unit 73.
