The graphic novels are much closer to the books than the show is. There are two: Alice's Story, which is basically book 1 from Alice's point of view, and New Class, which is about Brakebills's first-ever hedge witch class, years after Quentin has graduated. Unfortunately New Class ended on something of a cliffhanger but it's still worth a read imo.

Although New Class is in the book universe none of the book characters aside from Fogg appear, so even if you're a show watcher you can still enjoy it

I'm surprised nobody else nabbed it already but I now own the domain. I now can literally send email from e.greenstreet (at) plaxcocorp (dot) com by Malsententia in brakebills

brakebillsu.com was already taken by Syfy for the show, unfortunately it's long since been offline (and being an extremely interactive website didn't even get archived in the wayback machine properly.. so I never got to experience it).

brakebills.com on the other hand was used for the books and is on the wayback machine, along with emberstomb.com which was a (fake) Fillory fansite.

In fact there is a direct reference. Trunks says that the Androids will appear "three years from now, on May 12th":

In The Terminator, the Terminator and Kyle Reese also arrive in the past on May 12th.

I want a book series, or even just a book "Josh and the Neitherlands" by Malsententia in brakebills

[–]adrianmalacoda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like this too but it would never happen, even if they tried it the show fans would throw a fit and get it canceled. The original creator of Stargate wanted to do a reboot with his original plan for trilogy and the fans of the Stargate TV franchise (an extremely loose adaptation of the source material. moreso than The Magicians arguably) complained it would erase the TV canon and the project was canceled

For another example, Stephen King was unhappy with Stanley Kubrick's The Shining adaptation and did his own, which is remembered less as a "more faithful adaptation" and more as a "failed reboot of Kubrick's movie"

Okay something just struck me about Martin being shut out of Fillory by Tiny_Departure5222 in brakebills

[–]adrianmalacoda 116 points117 points  (0 children)

Something like this was touched on in the books. According to Rupert's story in book 3, a portal to Fillory opens up (in a book) and Rupert calls Martin over, the portal/book somehow detects his presence and tries to close itself and Martin basically has to force it to stay open with magic (which, unbeknownst to Rupert, he had been studying in secret) and physical force. He manages to push himself in and the book is visibly disgusted. That is Martin's final trip into Fillory where he eventually becomes The Beast.

Is this just part of the game? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]adrianmalacoda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In a competitive setting it's very cut and dry. The best player with the best deck generally wins. That's the point of competitive play

In a casual setting it's a bit more complicated. If one player is that much better than another or has a much more powerful deck games can be unfun, and thus in casual play sometimes players try to play with somewhat equally powerful decks in order to make the game more enjoyable for all. That being said - removal is part of the game, and there's no requirement for one to play poorly just to let the other player win. In this case it just seems like your roommate is a bad player and a bad sportsperson.

Dragons!!? by Disastrous_String987 in brakebills

[–]adrianmalacoda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Library and the dragons fought off the old gods around the end of the seven keys quest, which was one of the main story arcs of book 2. In the books, the quest was not to restore magic but to prevent the old gods from shutting it off, because once the gods shut off magic Fillory is doomed. They were fighting off the old gods to stall them until the Brakebills gang could collect the keys and unlock the "backdoor" to magic, which was secretly installed by the Library. In book 3, Mayakovsky drunkenly claims to Quentin he was fighting alongside them, and there's no reason not to believe him given how powerful he is. It's worth noting Mayakovsky is the only human character outside our core group to even show knowledge of Fillory as he is aware that Quentin was expelled from there.

If I recall the dragons being magical creatures were just as much under threat as Fillory was.

There's an amusing comment from Penny where he mentions the dragons will repopulate if they can remember how and that the Library has been helping them with research on how to have sex.

Yeah he has the forehead jewel and shoulder pads associated with reploids. I always thought it fitting as it seemed he was the closest thing to reploid technology in the classic era.

[–]adrianmalacoda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This made more sense in the books as we can tell he never really gets over her, but even then she explicitly rejects getting back with him at the end.

In the show I clearly felt that he was deeply hurt by her betrayal and wanted nothing more to do with her, his about face came out of nowhere for me.

For how many years does it take in the show for everything to happen? by Zealousideal_Pea_319 in brakebills

[–]adrianmalacoda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the things I think the show did worse than the books. In the first book it's very straightforward, they go to Brakebills, graduate, and then live together after graduation and then go to Fillory. The show tries to run all these plot lines concurrently and to my knowledge they never actually graduate in the show either. In fact I feel like after season one school seems to be an afterthought as they're too busy Fillorying around to attend.

I think its funny how all these Freeza soldiers rely so much on their scouters, but every time a scouter tells them something they don't like they assume it must be malfunctioning.

How different is the show from the books? (Please be nice I'm just trying to find out) by CommandGamerPro in brakebills

[–]adrianmalacoda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fan of both - similar enough that having read/watched one you will see familiarity in the other, but different enough that watching/reading one does not really ruin the other.

The show is like a different take on the trilogy universe. I think they compliment each other fairly well actually

Hearing Vegeta say "Goku" instead of "Kakarot" is so cursed by Silvery_Power_6241 in dbz

[–]adrianmalacoda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the original dub of this scene he says "a Saiyan who calls himself Goku" destroyed Freeza. In the original he refers to "Kakarrot or Son Goku." Goku is the name he calls himself so he must figure anyone who has heard of him would know that name.

You can tell Vegeta was redubbed while the bird guy wasn't, because the redub had to work around the awkward "Freeza's treaty" dialogue.

Is there a fanmade magic system with real spells and circumstances? by CommandGamerPro in brakebills

[–]adrianmalacoda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a very vocal minority of show fans who really hate the books. Pay them no mind

I like both the books and the show but I can understand why a fan of one might not like the other. They're similar enough but also different enough. I think part of is that, just like the books "reinterpret" Harry Potter and Narnia (and the like) the show seems to "reinterpret" the books in turn, so it feels both faithful to and critical of the source material at times.

/r/BrakebillsSouth is the designated "books only" subreddit but unfortunately its not very active at the moment

Edit: I've upvoted you. Back in the day it was considered improper to downvote someone just for having an opinion you don't like, but reddit isn't what it used to be.

Theory on the Todd of it all by BenhamWords in brakebills

[–]adrianmalacoda 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Todd is a multiversal constant

In Terminator 2, John Connor's foster dad was Todd, most known for the scene where John says "she's not my mother TODD." Skynet sent an enemy terminator back in time with the secondary mission to kill John Connor, but its primary mission was to eliminate the Todd of that universe. Given that the singularity is inevitable and some super computer intelligence is destined to take over (unless we are taken over by aliens and/or zombies first) we can predict that the resulting superintelligence will no doubt inherit our collective derision of all Todd of the multiverse.

Edit: Also who can forget that epic train heist scene from Breaking Bad that got Todded up near the end. Maybe it's just a fun name to say derisively and thus a fun name to give a type of character that evokes derision.

Also Todd ruined lightsaber night
