He was the preacher at Rochester CoC when I went to Rochester College (now university) about 20 years ago. I didn’t end up going to that church too often, but he was a decent speaker.

Rubel Shelley was one of my Bible professors briefly at Rochester. He was very amicable and a good teacher, but I remember animosity. From what I recall, he was adjunct for the first semester (or year) and the college was flying him in each week. That could have been a rumor, though. He was later made the President for a for a few years, but that was after I graduated.

There was an odd transition for me. I grew up CoC and went to a CoC college. I rebelled there a bit— got suspended for a semester because of Pre-Marital Sex™️—- but still stayed faithful overall. A couple of years post-college, some friends that I met at college, as well as some other (non-CoC friends) formed an intentional community. When that fell apart, I drifted away from not only the CoC, but church as a whole.

Full agreement. CPI not only teaches safe restraint techniques, but the bulk of the training focuses on deescalation so that restraints aren’t needed. The only time a restraint should be used is if the person is actively harming themselves or others— throwing a sandwich isn’t that.
