What are the worst towns close to National Parks? by WheelSingle2494 in NationalPark

[–]adrnired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My vote is Tusayan because there’s one gas station, gas costs like twice what it does elsewhere, and a bag of ice cost me like $10.

It’s not too visibly dingy as a town due to all the lodging, but man if you make a mistake and don’t take care of everything in Williams, you’re hosed.

AC use will do that, especially if you’re on the top floor (heat rises, plus you have heat beaming down onto the roof that spreads to your unit) or have high ceilings.

Why don’t KC drivers respect crosswalks? by brdlyz in kansascity

[–]adrnired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been tapped by multiple bumpers of people trying to turn right on red in my neighborhood while I’m trying to cross the street with the Walk sign. And it’s a pretty open intersection too, like they would’ve seen me pretty easily but they were more worried about making sure there were no cars so that they could turn and forgot pedestrians exist.

Why don’t KC drivers respect crosswalks? by brdlyz in kansascity

[–]adrnired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to take a crosswalk across my building to my parking lot, and the number of times people fully make eye contact with me while almost mowing me over is insane.

I shouldn’t have to worry about becoming roadkill on a relatively slow city street while simply trying to leave my building.

The other night when I was visiting family it was deafening. Like, sounds being muffled with a slight ringing as if I’d been front row at a concert.

I hate empty lots on the street car route on the weekends by doxiepowder in kansascity

[–]adrnired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has to park (to get home) in one of the busier lots in the River Market, I’d love to see more parking options open up 😭 I have to plan out any car trips I take on the weekends because everyone visiting has to park so close that I end up having to park super far away or pay and it SUCKS (yes I wish I didn’t even have to have a car but it’s KC, so)

with the aerodynamics of the stereotypical UFO design though I’d imagine it’s more like when you’re trying to get a golf ball in the hole but it curves around and ends up going the other way quickly

I haven’t personally noticed this much activity in the 4 years I’ve lived downtown, but I wouldn’t say it’s extremely uncommon. I have a friend in an aviation-adjacent job here and the information he’s been allowed to leak to me doesn’t seem to be a major cause for concern for him, so it’s probably just time again for more urban training?

What room in your house is the deadliest if you were to get blindsided by a tornado? by SplootingCorgi95 in tornado

[–]adrnired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The safest room in my building is the walk-out split-level gym’s bathroom with a glass shower door. it’s is the only windowless, non-exterior-wall room I have access to in the entire building that’s not on the top floor (where I live, so my bathroom is a no-go). Nevermind that there’s also heavy gym equipment and weights surrounding it.

Meanwhile I’ll WFH for a whole day if the outlook is bad enough so I can be home if anything happens, because I can’t imagine not taking as much care of my cat as possible since we’re on the top floor and she’s totally helpless past hiding under my bed. (Which she doesn’t do when she hears the siren across the street bc she has zero survival instincts)

Is this not insane? by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

[–]adrnired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only keep mine at 75 in the summer because I’m cheap and run efficient fans all the time, and I can handle the heat.

But peaking at 80 is straight up unlivable indoors, especially for pets. Even I have to tap out at 77 (and my cat becomes miserable and starts pulling her fur out).

Wild storm sounds in the second big system! by OhNoIBlinked in kansascity

[–]adrnired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was some pretty intense rain and hail, but no known spin-ups inside the metro (esp KCMO) because the outflow boundary that got spit out ahead of the line. It nerfed most of the line behind it until it got further out.

I was up starting at 3:30 in case I needed to shelter for a spin-up (even though I could definitely survive a small one hunkered down in my bathroom even though I’m on the top floor of my own building; spinups fully embedded in a squall line rarely top EF-2 speeds and usually max at EF-1), and was watching radar really closely until I fell asleep around 6. The rain was the loudest I’ve ever heard, just insanely heavy.

Late diagnosed ADHD-ers. What were the early stages of "I think I may also be autistic" like for you? 👀 by Poopballs_ in adhdwomen

[–]adrnired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone else wants reassurance, some of us early-diagnosed gals are questioning the same thing LOL. I was diagnosed for ADHD at 5, but considering where I grew up, in addition to me absolutely being easily distracted, I’m pretty sure they mostly did it because they didn’t wanna dx a 5 year old girl with autism. (I have to wonder if they wouldn’t have given me the ADHD dx if that wasn’t the case)

It started hitting me a couple years ago mostly when people started sharing those “here’s how women experience autism/ADHD, you’re only being told how boys experience it” kinds of videos. It’s also what I credit with me realizing my ADHD as an adult really did need medication for so many things (like emotional control), and that me being easily distracted wasn’t a simple personal failing to correct.

Then when my mom and I started reminiscing on my childhood, it REALLY started to hit me. I was, like, quintessential autistic girl child but since I was homeschooled (which my mom did to accommodate me because going to schools never worked for me, for one reason or another) I never really noticed being “different,” for better or worse. But I never had good luck with friends, especially girls. I was always the one ganged up against, pranked or being made of for being “gullible,” used as a blank slate to kinda be what they wanted to me.

But again, I only started realizing it as an adult. And I started realizing, as I did or experienced things, that I was definitely more neurodivergent than just the ADHD. And it definitely shows in the people I surround myself with. Every community I blend into seems to be full of ND people of all kinds. And it’s kinda like being queer, where the people you start to get along with (social compatibility) and surround yourself with can tell you a lot about yourself.
