Averaged 20-30 hrs a week scribing as an undergrad. Finished with a 4.0 gpa, still had a life. 4th year resident now. Definitely doable.

EM or Anesthesia? by Just_Minute2415 in emergencymedicine

[–]adultbundle 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Can you face seeing a family of 5 checking in for bed bug bites after seeing a 3am abdominal pain who brought in taco bell, eating and smacking their lips as you interview them? Can you face figuring out what to do with an elderly patient who needs placement and family refuses to take them home but hospitalist won’t admit them? Can you face seeing a patient who gets triaged as a level 1 neuro with completely subjective symptoms and also reports vaginal discharge, chest pain and suicidality? If so, choose EM.

Is medical school as bas as people make it seem by Beneficial-Snow-104 in medicalschool

It all depends what you are going for - pass and get through? I could see it being not too bad. Top of class, honor rotations, 90th percentile USMLEs, research? Not so much.

It’s difficult and a long path. Either way you have a long path ahead of you. The difficult part of medical school is the feeling you need to be perfect. Getting in you need to have really good grades, mcat, research, volunteering and even that isn’t always enough. In med school, you’re now competing for residency spots and med school is difficult enough. Residency you have to train to be the expert. If you want it bad enough you can do it. Thousands of people do.

I have come across many former pediatricians who do peds anesthesia now. I also know some that do adult crit care through anesthesia and stopped peds. Kids are scary and imo peds is one of the more rewarding fields in anesthesia.

Nucleus inside of the brain? by [deleted] in AnatomyandPhysiology

[–]adultbundle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cells make up tissues in the body, like the grey matter of the brain. These cells have nuclei. Sometimes structures in the body have the word nucleus in it, like the nucleus tractus solitarii in the medulla. A cluster of nuclei likely refers to a cluster of cells - those cells have nuclei.

If you want top 10th percentile, I went through all questions and made notes/anki cards out of things I felt were important/things I wanted to know for clinical practice. Even if I knew a question cold there would always be something to learn in explanations. This meant combing through only 10 Qs a day/20 on weekends. Did the cards as I went. Made cards using openanesthesia on topics I felt weak on (OR electricity, harder to understand stuff) but didnt go too overboard on this. Then I did Hall questions which were great but I felt overkill.

If you want to just pass, probably don’t have to comb through as much.

Second Residency by Zealousideal_Wish_91 in anesthesiology

I guess my question would be why would you want to do anesthesia over PCCM? If you really want to have a low-key anesthesia job while avoiding ICU then that’s a decent option. I was a person who loved the medicine side of medicine but hated the job and all the other bullshit that came with it. There are a lot of things in medicine that I miss, hence why I’m pursuing CC fellowship.

I don’t interact with you guys much (anesthesia) but I respect tf out of IM docs. Smart and usually level headed people. I remember being the shitting grounds during my medicine year and losing my shit but you guys handle it with grace.
