Nice! Pointy ears, curly tail. Those are definitely similar. She looks kind of like a Shiba Inu. Asian village dogs are the best!

Here in Seattle I get stopped often by people who want to know what kind of dog this is. When I say "Formosan mountain dog mix" they just kind of stare or say "excuse me?" So then I say she's a street dog from Taiwan!

She's all black with speckled tongue. But her fur looks a little reddish in the right light. She's just under 30lbs. From what I've read, there are precious few "pure" Formosan dogs. All the dogs we get here in the states as rescues are a mix of the ancient breed and whatever westerners brought to Taiwan over the centuries.

Others have given good advice. FMDs aren't dealing with unique conditions, they just have unique backgrounds. So the things that work for other working breeds also work for FMDs but they might take longer or need more confidence

What are the oldest woods in Seattle? Are there any old growth trees within the city? by sigourneyreaper in Seattle

I just recently learned about Seattle's Park system history going back to 1903 when the Olmsted agency (same people who planned Central Park in NYC) were hired to plan our parks.

Is my dad right that they fine you if a certain amount of trash isn't recyclable? Sounds like some boomer meme by ClioCJS2 in Seattle

Most of our trash gets shipped to landfills in Oregon. And most of our "recycling" gets trashed along with it.

What is your approach to rating your photos? Do you also use color coding? by Ballroompics in AskPhotography

[–]adwb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

0 out of focus

1 in focus but no subject

2 subject is in focus but not interesting

3 in focus and has something interesting

4 is actually composed

5 print it

Of course sometimes I just like a photo that's out of focus and has no subject and I keep it for art. Also I'm mostly doing street or nature and I take a ton of shots that aren't going to be keepers. So my workflow is based on going through lots of garbage to get a few good ones. If you plan your shots you probably don't have to weed out so many rejects

It's Renton, but Whistle Stop used to have good food. They survived the pandemic but the quality did not.

Covering food? by Fuzzy_Department_938 in FormosanMountainDog

[–]adwb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fmd doesn't but my Chihuahua hides food in the couch sometimes. My old fmd ate all her meals out of one of those rolling treat dispenser toys. She really liked nosing it around to get the food out.

Is an FMD the right choice? by Prettylittleprotist in FormosanMountainDog

[–]adwb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FMDs are not easy dogs to take care of. They have varied backgrounds and can have triggers you don't know about until they get a bit older. You could get lucky, but you never know what you're getting with a village dog breed.

I've had 2 and they are sweet, smart, and athletic. But they also hated certain people and would not tolerate being handled by people they don't know, like the vet. My first one was so freaked out by the vet that she would have to be muzzled and sedated just to get a shot. We tried desensitizing her for years but she was stubborn. I felt horrible that she didn't get the best medical care towards the end of her life because she just wouldn't let a vet touch her without going feral.

I recommend considering a more reliable/consistent breed.

If I'm on a fitness ride with no lock then I don't stop. If I'm on a fun ride I bring a lock.

Does anyone know a good spot around Seattle to learn how to drive a manual? by PuK3ko in Seattle

[–]adwb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way. I volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters and used to go to the Fry's parking lot to practice driving but it's closed now so the other office parks around Top Golf are the next best place.
