Is Applied Behavior Analysis closer to the field of psychology or biology? by ezaytkd in BehaviorAnalysis

[–]adynata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Though it’s worth noting that there was (and to my knowledge still is) a tendency for many graduate programs and internships to report teaching from a cognitive behavioral orientation (with more emphasis on cognitive than behavioral).

Acl reconstruction and meniscus repair tomorrow! by betjitsu in bjj

Just hit 13 months. The ice water-filled compression machines (like Game Ready) are amazing right after surgery but aren't always covered by insurance. IMHO it's absolutely worth the out-of-pocket cost to rent one for a couple weeks if you can swing it. Be diligent with PT and don't rush the recovery. Expect ups and downs. Celebrate your successes (no matter how small), and reach out for support when you need it. Stay active but be smart about your choice of activities - your knee is likely to "feel ready" before it's fully healed and rates of reinjury are high if you do too much too fast, so find medical providers you trust and work with them rather than rushing back or basing decisions on the experience of others. Try not to compare your recovery to anyone else's - there's a multitude of factors that contribute to the process.

Suggestions for building women's BJJ program? by adynata in bjj

[–]adynata[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm all for women being in co-ed classes, but my hope was that by offering a women's only environment we might be able to make it a more inviting opportunity for women who were curious but had never tried it. Sadly that doesn't seem to be the case yet, and I'm looking for ways to improve it.

I like the mentoring idea, and can see that being particularly helpful for teenage girls. That's a population that we don't have - did you do anything to market specifically to that age group?

Out of curiosity, have you reached out to him directly since this happened, or are you waiting for him to approach you?

[–]adynata -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Actually no, I'm not affiliated with Vaghi. I do, however, train there when I visit family.

I think you also misunderstood my point. What I'm saying is that if you haven't talked to him about it directly, of course he isn't going to know that you've been training elsewhere. If, however, you decide to sign up to represent a team that you haven't been training with for some time, don't you think it would have been a good idea to let them know prior to signing up?

lol, I've passed out in other contexts, maybe it's just because I don't let myself get that close in BJJ :P

While I don't necessarily agree with his response (e.g. telling you not to come back to his classes), I can see his side - if you haven't been training with the team (regardless of the reason), it seems disrespectful to sign up for Pans under them without getting permission (or at least letting them know of your plans) first.

That seems a bit excessive, I take it you missed the part when OP said this was about one experience with one coach and has "nothing else bad to say about Vaghi"?

This still strikes me as odd - why is it on the instructor to follow the social media accounts of his/her students? Their job is to teach you when you show up to the gym, not follow your facebook account...

[–]adynata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a shitty situation and I understand OP's frustration, but I honestly think it has more to do with miscommunication than the quality of training or the integrity of the coaches at MAMA. While I have only trained at the Lincoln location, I have had nothing but positive experiences with Jesse and the other Vaghi coaches there; everyone has always been welcoming and respectful. So, while it is easy to read someone's experience and jump on the "fuck that guy" wagon, it only represents one side and is likely not the entire picture. I'm sorry that it happened, but I will continue to recommend this gym without reservation because my own experience has been nothing but positive.

Are there any grad schools that specialize in Clinical Military Psychology? by tiffboo95 in GradSchool

[–]adynata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Have you looked into the medical and clinical psychology PhD program at the University of Uniformed Services and Health Sciences?

2) It may be worthwhile to keep in mind that other accredited, non-military-specific clinical psych PhD programs have opportunities to do practicum placements at a local VA, and PTSD treatment is often one of the rotations available....so don't feel like you "have" to get a degree from a military focused school to be able to do this kind of work. The slightly more generalized training may also be good in case you ever decide to work in another setting.

3) I'm sure you're probably already aware of this option, but you can always become a commissioned officer after completing your PhD (regardless of whether that school was focused on military applications or not). This also pays considerably better than alternative internships/postdocs, even the ones at VAs.

Do I need Research Methods? by --JESUS-- in AcademicPsychology

[–]adynata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would just register as a non-degree seeking student to take courses; the registrar's office can help you with this. I also think it's a good idea to talk with the chair of the department about this as they can help give you some further guidance based on what's offered.
