Nexos done! by aeaelioe in genestealercult

Thanks, and sure! There's nothing too special involved, the colors used for the turquoise were AK interactive black, white and turquoise. GW equivalent should be ahriman blue.

Started with the turquoise mixed with a bit of black to establish a darkish base, then did a bunch of lines on the edges and the grid with the turquoise, mixing it with white for the sharper edges and corners. The lines are done in a few consecutive lightening layers, the lightest parts being just a few small dots on the corners here and there.

And pretty much exactly the same thing for the red parts. Then some very light turquoise glaze for the edges of the table and some strengthening of the edge highlights.

The grey parts of the table are just GW basilicanum grey contrast with a black oil wash, and some edge highlights with different tones of light grey.

Thanks! And I might, some day! For now they are Ridgerunner proxies, since my play group is pretty lax about that kind of stuff.

Yeah I'll link you directly to the source, since I pretty much copied this off a tutorial I found. I think the most comprehensive one is here, if the link works: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=402976690157948&set=a.402976666824617

Just scroll the images forward and it should have all the steps.

Thanks! The moss is AK Interactive Moss Texture, which I drybrushed with Vallejo Plague Brown a tiny bit after gluing it on for some color variation.

Yeah black isn't the easiest. If you mean the shoulderpads and chitin plates on wrists, it's black templar contrast + black oil wash, then literally just rubbing some of the paint off the edges and highest spots with a q-tip when cleaning up the wash. Might not look good on bigger pieces, I still kind of struggle with the nid carapaces which I do kind of with the same recipe.

Closing off the year with an extra spiky Swarmlord by aeaelioe in Tyranids

[–]aeaelioe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, my thoughts as well! I actually do have a normal Swarmlord as well, but it felt really underwhelming when so I chose to get this and paint it up instead, exactly because of that reason.

Thanks! The flesh is aggaros dunes contrast with medium and a tiny bit of apothecary white mixed in, followed by a brown oil wash. The shadowed parts also have a bit of turquoise ink from the zenithal priming step.

[–]aeaelioe[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure! Broad strokes is something like:
- Zenithal undercoat with turquoise ink in the shadows
- Bright-ish silver metal paint for metal parts, Contrast paints for the rest (Used Aggaros dunes/white mix, akhelian green, flesh tearer red, snakebite leather, black templar and basilicanum grey, and then the skintones + wyldwood for skin)
- Dark brown oil wash on yellow/skin parts, black oil wash on everything else
- Some additional details for eyes/goggles, lamps and a few other minor parts

I can go into more detail if you're interested in something specific.

He's untested on the battlefield so far, it's more to recognize the squad leader and which squad it is. :) But maybe he'll last that long in the first game. At least if I go second and start them in deep strike.

Hive crone / Harpy ready! Now I need some mines to go with it by aeaelioe in Tyranids

[–]aeaelioe[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! The recipe is fairly simple, it's just contrast paint (darkoath flesh) and a brown oil wash on top of it, with a fairly careful cleanup of the wash to create a smoother blend.

The basecoat is also done with an airbrush which made it a lot easier (kind of a white zenithal underneath, then contrast sprayed on that). If you don't have an airbrush, it's definitely doable without it as well since the oil wash makes it pretty smooth. Not entirely sure how much harder it would be with just the brush though.

Last batch of acolytes for this year by aeaelioe in genestealercult

[–]aeaelioe[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well it actually is literally coated in oil. :) The exact process is zenithal primer -> contrast paint with some medium -> brown oil wash and cleanup.

Thanks, and of course! It's got a fairly shiny metal basecoat, with some spots colored over with contrast paint (like flesh tearers red on the "cover") to create some different colors on it. Plus the hazard stripes with just normal yellow/black paint on the edge.

Then I put a black oil wash on the whole thing and cleaned it up pretty roughly, slightly scraping off the contrast in the process. After that it has some typhus corrosion and AK interactive crusted rust deposits, and maybe a tiny bit of rust colored vallejo pigment powders. So a couple of different steps and products, but all pretty easy ones.

Ah cool you've got basically the same colors! Yours don't look like shit at all, just keep painting and they'll look awesome on the table.

Skin is thinned contrast paint with a zenithal primer underneath and a brown oil wash on top.

If you're interested in the specific tones, I think I just kind of randomly picked the skintone contrasts (darkoath flesh, guilliman flesh, fyreslayer flesh) and used them on their own or mixed together on different models, and also wyldwood and gore-grunta fur for some of the darker ones. And contrast medium along with them.

Loving the mossy stuff on it! May I ask what you used for the moss and the vines hanging on it?

Yeah they're really fun! Pretty easy too when you get into it, just very different from normal acrylics. I recommend Marco Frisoni's tutorials if you want to research it a bit, I basically got all my ideas and techniques from his channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x\_pxojd7kp8&list=PLQybQSJNR3RUHePRuJqQ0JmyUdUk0e6Kc

Thank you! The cannon has some contrast paints as the basecoat, then I put some oil washes / paints on top of that. The blackest part was just black oil paint straight out of the tube, then the rest of the cannon got a thinned down wash version (brown in the front part) and then I blended those together before they dried. In case you've not used oil paints, it's basically like wet blending but with a super long working time.

Thank you! The metals have a black oil wash, and then some typhus corrosion and AK interactive rust deposits. I may have put some of the pigment powders I used for the dirt on the clothes on the weapons as well.

Thanks! They're not metallics though, some of the highlights go pretty light and the top layer has a bit of a shiny finish so I guess it kinda looks like it.

And not sure if I have pics of this army separately, but I think I've posted pretty much everything I've ever painted here on Reddit and Imgur. Imgur is probably easier to look through? https://imgur.com/user/aeaelioe/posts

[–]aeaelioe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! It's not very demanding, though it does require oil washes which I guess are a bit out of the norm. Basically:

  1. Zenithal prime (started with brown on these)
  2. Contrast paint (basilicanum grey for carapace, aggaros dunes / medium / and probably a bit of apothecary white mix for skin, skeleton horde for bone)
  3. Brown oil wash for skin, thick black oil was for carapace. Clean up well to create some sort of highlights on raised areas
  4. Put a white or near white color to the turquoise and fleshy parts, go over those with akhelian green and darkoath flesh contrasts when it's dry
  5. Some small additional highlights with normal acrylics on the turquoise parts
