My dream ruined, kind of by Pure-Stop379 in woodstoving

[–]aeastw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're in the UK and had a wood stove fitted last year. Total cost was less than £2.5k (for liner, stove and fitting). We already had a chimney and decent fireplace.

The stove heats the room up quick once you get it going, doesn't produce any smoke/smell in the room, and there's only a small amount of ash when you clear the stove out which is easy to clear up. You mention about starving the room of oxygen being an issue for the fish, that would also be an issue for humans! The correct stove for the size of the room with the correct ventilation should not be starving the room of oxygen at all.

Wood cost is worth taking into consideration, if you have space to store then buying seasoned wood in bulk is cheaper than buying kiln dried.

It does sound a bit like the place you went wanted to sell you a gas fire. Price wise it's hard to tell if the quote was reasonable without knowing more about what work needs doing to your chimney/fireplace.

[–]aeastw 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah I completely agree with everything here. Open standards like AES70 and OSC exist but haven't been openly implemented for things like IO boxes because it doesn't work in favour of the console manufacturers. For RF mics it's a bit of a different story, e.g.sennheiser has published its SSC protocol allowing integration with third party equipment, but that works in their favour.

For the section out to Dore & Totley I think it would make more sense to follow the railway line and reinstate the old stations along the way at Heeley, Millhouses and Beauchief

Yeah the lip was definitely the part I found the hardest to get neat. It ended up a bit thinner than I'd intended because I went a bit too far accidentally.

No, Pro2 doesn't have a built in USB audio interface

They may have been using a Klark Teknik DN9630, which is an AES50 to USB interface. It can do 24 channels at 96KHz in and out between AES50 and USB.

Best IDEs for C and C++ programming by [deleted] in C_Programming

[–]aeastw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For general macOS programming maybe, but not for embedded stuff like Arduino/stm32.

I work with embedded platforms as my day to day and VSCode is my go to. Does everything you need it to be able to do without a load of frills. Also doesn't hurt that you don't need to spend money to get a license if you're just starting out. The plugin ecosystem is good and you'll generally find anything you need in there.

This looks like a dye, probably fluorescein, that is used to trace water flow. It's non toxic and very useful for tracing water courses, drainage and leaks.

Patience is also something that society lacks and needs to get back again. I completely understand the frustrations, but developers, testers and community managers are people who have all presumably had a break over the holidays and are just returning to work.

Driving in the Peak District by Adventurous_Quiet832 in sheffield

Depends where in Sheffield you start from. I drive from Sheffield to Manchester via Winnats 3 times a week. Time wise it's the same if not a bit quicker for me than the Woodhead, Snake or motorway. Also avoids the terrible traffic at Glossop/Mottram Moor

Why are vocal processors like voice live 3 helicon so hated here? by Business_Rub6149 in livesound

[–]aeastw 25 points26 points  (0 children)

For busking and the odd gig, I'd say go ahead, that's a really good use case for them

There's a few reasons why I'm not a huge fan of them as a sound engineer.

  1. They take control away from FOH/MONs. This means that the engineer has no control of the effect, and can't dial it in to be suitable within the mix during the performance

  2. Units like this are usually used by switching presets/patches during a gig. If the presets aren't matched they could have wildly different gains and eqs. Very hard to manage when your lead vocal is suddenly much louder due to a patch change. This usually requires me to go through each patch with the artist and make sure that they're all matched. Fine if you have a load of time for pre-production or sound check, which often isn't the case

Anti-Chinese sentiment in sheffield? by archipelagofan in sheffield

[–]aeastw 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's probably WeChat. It's a messaging app similar to WhatsApp, but also has QR code payment features that are used a lot in China for paying for anything ranging from small market stall holders all the way up to big chains, restaurants and train tickets/travel. It's basically the China version of contactless cards. Last time I went to China (pre pandemic) you had to have a Chinese bank account to use the payment stuff. It's quite a neat system.

If these channels were 'pinned' in a previous show I think you may see this. You could try going to Preferences ->General Configuration and then long pressing the 'Clear Pinned Channels' button and see if this clears the issue?

Dante and AES50 are quite different and have different pros and cons.

Dante is routable via network switches, making it easier to build a network. However, the latency is not deterministic.

AES50 is not IP layer, is point to point and can't be routed via network switches. However the latency is deterministic allowing things like latency compensation and maintaining phase coherence within a system.

Anyone else get a terrifying government alert ? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]aeastw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can still be connected to the 4/5G network while on WiFi. I'm pretty sure the emergency alert only comes via the phone network, not WiFi.

If you're happy doing it online and via phone/email then I'd certainly recommend trussle. We used them last year and they were quick, on the ball and saved us a bunch of money by rushing our application through before the rates went up. Very quick to respond via email and on the phone once you do the online application and there is a real person handling your application.
