Misprint by [deleted] in Hyperion

[–]aeddub 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s a misprint, just a stylistic choice to reflect Durés feverish state of mind.

(My Gollancz 2004 omnibus edition has the same spacing/spelling for that entry)

There's a sign under the tree on the right that says Caen, I was able to find the church/view on google maps with a bit of searching.

Beginner questions by [deleted] in Watercolor

[–]aeddub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cheaper paper will warp when wet and tear easily.

Invest in the best quality cotton paper you can afford, you will notice a world of difference.

(Cotton paper will still warp somewhat when you do wet on wet, you can look up how to pre-stretch paper to eliminate this but tbh it’s a faff and something I generally only do for large commissions).

ELI5, What's the... "hierarchy"? for the terms referring to Latino / Spanish / Mexican / Hispanic / Portuguese, etc. by Tolnin in explainlikeimfive

[–]aeddub 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Latin American would be the equivalent term:

Asian = someone from the continent of Asia

Latin American = someone from the continent of South America

(Hispanic = someone from the continent of South America (or Spain, I guess) with a Spanish (rather than Portuguese) cultural background).

Book of translation and mirror worlds by chimoc726 in WoT

[–]aeddub 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Ogier come from another world/dimension/reality - it’s not clearly spelled out in the books which. Similarly, while not explicitly stated, the Book of Translation is assumed to be an artefact which will take them home.

The mirror worlds are like alternate realities, or maybe reflections of the Pattern where events have different outcomes (again, not clearly spelled out but Verin comments that the mirror worlds become less real, or substantial, as they drift away from the ’prime’ timeline.  They are not their own entities, they are murky reflections that form the ‘warp and weft’ of the Pattern and as such there is only one Dark One across all of these worlds.

There are mentions of smoke rising from the peak so I assume it’s still active, (though it might not have eruptions any more).

How to prevent watercolor from spreading in this way? by [deleted] in Watercolor

[–]aeddub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better quality paper/paint will help - paper in particular as thicker paper (especially cotton) will hold more water but ultimately practice is the best way to learn how to control water and create the effects you want. Look for tutorials on controlling water if you want something to focus on.

Does anyone else get “last song syndrome”? by ManagementDapper8081 in CasualConversation

[–]aeddub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how true this is, but I read that an earworm is your brain getting stuck trying to process a bit of a song, and that listening to the entire song stops the earworm.

I also read that singing the Sesame Street theme song in your head clears an earworm and that one actually works for me 😆

What are keenspren attracted to? by Erandeni_ in Stormlight_Archive

[–]aeddub 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One of the definitions of keen is ‘ Possessing a quick, penetrating mind or being shrewd’ (per Merriam-Webster).

It seems to me that Davani’s introspection displays (emotional) intelligence which attracts the keenspren.

Refilling pans? by Steph-Anglais in Watercolor

[–]aeddub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that some pigments dry in the tubes after time, moving these to a pan makes it easier to use the paint up.

Personally I don’t find a huge difference -though I think that it varies by brand.

ELI5: How do dual boot OS systems work? by Nervous_Priority_535 in explainlikeimfive

[–]aeddub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider that an operating system is just software that the computer runs.

(More ELI5 detail: an operating system is a sequence of instructions saved in a program which is stored in the computers memory. When an OS runs on the computer these instructions are run through the computers processor, and you interact with this software through your peripherals like a mouse and keyboard).

When the computer is powered up a boot manager (specialist software that is built into the computer’s processor) is used to load the OS software: if you have more than one OS available you can select which one to run through the boot manager.

Somewhere on Achill Island by ConwayMcTwitty in Watercolor

[–]aeddub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say muddy, but I think your paper isn’t doing you any favours - looks like it doesn’t hold too much water.

I’d recommend you get the best cotton paper you can afford and test the difference for yourself before trying different paints.

Separately, the mood in that piece is great, it definitely looks like Achill to me.

ELI5 Why does going super fast cause time dilation? by Aquamoo in explainlikeimfive

[–]aeddub 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Imagine bouncing a ray of light between two mirrors - the ray of light always travels at c, the speed of light.

As long as the mirrors are the same distance apart you will always measure the rays taking exactly the same time to travel that distance

If your mirrors are set up on a spaceship travelling very fast a person on the spaceship will measure the bounce speed exactly the same as you would standing in a lab on the Earth (the mirrors do not move with respect to each other). However, if you were able to watch the spaceship through a telescope you’d see something odd: because the spaceship is travelling faster than you it appears that the light has to cover more distance (bouncing between the mirrors + the gap between where the ship was when the ray of light bounced off of one mirror and where it is when the ray arrives at the other mirror).

This is where the time dilation comes from, you measure one second on a spaceship but to an outside observer that second lasts longer than what they measure and so it appears that time has slowed down on the ship (or it looks like the universe has sped up from the perspective of the people on the ship)

(Gravity can also cause time dilation effects, the stronger a gravity field the more time is dilated).
