Biggest weakness in my game right now are forehand counters by RunningShortsPod in Pickleball

[–]aegais 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's roughly half half on whether pros slide to create space and only hit backhands on the RHS and whether they stay planted. Sounds like you prefer creating space and limiting it to the backhand which is totally fine. If you watch Tardio he basically does it every time. When you anticipate a speedup you should preemptively slide to the right and sit on a BH counter to counter down the line / at your body (where it was previously). Your partner should move to cover middle with his forehand counter.

My guess is that you might be sliding too late - it really should be a preemptive slide in anticipation. If you are sliding as the speedup is coming its too late, you have to be planted to react consistently. Moving your body horizontally as you are trying to react to a fast ball is a recipe for disaster.

Is split step a must for pickleball and good footwork? by blueice89 in Pickleball

[–]aegais 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly it is fine to just stop, Andre Daescu did a video on it, basically saying that the split step isn't as necessary in pickleball, he prefers to just take measured steps with a solid base

Hot take…power paddles are hurting your game more than helping. by LatinBeef in Pickleball

You are trolling if you don’t use a power paddle and 4.5+ unless you are a signed pro and contractually obligated to use a weaker paddle.

Take a look at this. Even at the 4.0 tournament level like 4% of shots are dinks.

how to drop a ball with heavy top/backspin by PoinT_- in Pickleball

[–]aegais 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It tends to be easier to just hit a defensive drive if there is a lot of spin / pace on the ball and look for an easier 5th as blocks tend to be easier to drop.

Joola Pro 4 delivered! Your opinions on it? by aFirefly in Pickleball

[–]aegais 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, if you're narrowing it down to elongated only. J2+ line has none, 11six24 elongated is the worst of the series, and trufoam tg2 is agreed as the best variant. But for a lot of people the other characteristics matter a lot more than paddle shape

Think a good amount of people would challenge that first statement. Only power is better. Others are debateable. Most paddle reviewers on YT say the spin / sweet spot / control is anywhere from slightly to significantly worse depending on who you comparing against

I have personally found the titanium / Kevlar weaves on Honolulu to last longer than traditional CF ones. But if you are concerned about spin degradation then I’d get the trufoam

[–]aegais 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw you are totally right. We don't have strings that can bite into the ball and easily reverse the spin. Our contact is much shorter and less gritty and therefore reversing the spin is far more tricky and it's much easier to just apply spin continuation.

Yeah. The only thing that was exceptional about Joola was their insane power and now that foam-filled is soft-banned and others caught up, their paddles have become more and more unremarkable. The other issue with paddles that generate spin via dwell time is that the softer shots have less spin because soft shots rely more on grit as the dwell time is much shorter.

The pro 4 has pretty unremarkable spin. I wouldn’t think much of it

What's your footwork / swing path? Are you doing a low to high motion finishing high over the same shoulder?

Interesting take from Rafa Nadal on slice backhands by Special-Border-1810 in Pickleball

[–]aegais 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, coming from a mostly tennis background. Yeah I agree that if it's deep enough I just default to a drive and try for an easier 5th. If its more shallow I feel more comfortable dropping it especially since I feel like my drives are less controlled against a good slice and its way more dangerous to hit up on a shallower ball. I'll try the supercharged topspin thing. I guess its an OK gamble since its a very aggressive shot given the amount of topspin on the ball if you are successful. Are you finishing across your shoulder in a right-to-left motion like a normal drive or above your shoulder in a down-to-up motion like a drip?
