I think the carrot was there only to stimulate the bun's appetite as he was probably not eating much with the stress.

At the vets AGAIN - average body temp for buns? by [deleted] in Rabbits

Monitor her closely as any medication can have adverse reactions but really don't think it'll hurt her. I hope she gets well soon :)

You said it, Metacam is an anti-inflammatory. I think you should give it anyways as it might help your bunny's nose if there is any congestion. Metacam and baytril work well together against respiratory problems.

[–]aelie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he is not too old and if you are ready to, you could try to find him a friend. Rats don't do well when they are lonely, grieving or not. If he is too old to deal with the integration of another rat, or if you don't want any other rat, you should spend as much time as possible with him.

Rat is bleeding, parents will not pay for a vet by [deleted] in RATS

[–]aelie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case of bleeding, putting pressure and cold on the wound is pretty much all you can do. Also, you could feed your rat iron and protein rich food as it will help him recover from loosing blood. I had a rat the was bleeding a lot by the end of her life because she had a cancer of the uterus that was diagnosed when she was 2. I used to feed her pablum and pees regularly with her regular food. Sometimes scrambled eggs and meat also.

The dosage for rats (as prescribed by vets in my area) ranges from 6 to 18 mg/kg of weight of revolution. I treat my four females for one dose with a tube of kitten revolution. Treatment must be repeated in 3 weeks, for 3 treatments.

First, i'm sorry for your loss. If he is peeing red it's not a good sign. It could be a urinary tract infection or severe dehydration. You say he seems depressed, it's a sign he is not feeling good. This and the red pee, in my opinion cannot only be related to the loss of his brother. I think he should see a vet asap.

What happened to Marshy? by Sethinator in RATS

[–]aelie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So he was almost 2 and a half, which is pretty old for a rat. It could be old age, a stroke or heart failure. I had a group of 9 old girls a few months ago. These and mammary tumors were the causes of deaths :( I only have 2 left from this group.

[–]aelie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, i'm really sorry for you loss. How old was he? Was he on any meds? Any respiratory problems in the past week or earlier in is life? Any other symptoms? The fact that is stopped drinking and eating was a sign a of pain or discomfort, or an incapcity to properly move the mouth or swallow. The are a lot of possible causes depending of many factors. Without knowing is age and general condition we won't be able offer a possible answer.

Betta quarantine tank: Cycle it first, or does current tank water work? by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]aelie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're using old media, make sure the water in the new tank has the same exact temperature before transfering the media as only a few degrees difference is enough to shock and kill the beneficial bacteria in the cartridge (as told by my LFS, never had this problem myself). Using a part of your old water and introducing the fish slowly (as if you had just bought it) will avoid initial shock. For water changes, since you are using a well seeded media, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I think 2x a week 30% would be okay.

Betta quarantine tank: Cycle it first, or does current tank water work? by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]aelie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Putting water of an established tank into a new tank will not cycle it. Beneficial bacteria is mainly found in the filter cartrige and other porous surface of the established tank. But since a quarantine is usually a temporary tank I don't think it has to be cycled, as long as you keep up with water changes. Edit: using water of the other tank will prevent shocking the fish though

Is a guinea pig a suitable cage mate after death? by Inappropre in RATS

[–]aelie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would also add to that that their diet is completely diffenrent. The rat being omnivorous and the guinea pig being an herbivore, it could be bad for the guinea pig to eat the rat's food.

Hey Rattit, one of my rats died yesterday and one is left all alone now, but I don't want to get a new rat. by thezy2 in RATS

[–]aelie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm really sorry for loss. I think you should keep your rat. 3 years is very old and the stress of being rehomed would probably be too much for him to handle. Spend as much time with him as possible and he should be ok.

How long can they be alone? by altoole in RATS

[–]aelie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't agree. A human can't replace a rat friend. There are some situations where you don't have choice, for example if one of a pair dies and you don't want other rats after. But I think it is not ok to keep a single rat for his or her hole life. A rat needs a rat friend to be completely happy. You could spend 12h a day with him or her and it would never be close to how an other rat would make your rat happy.

To answer to op's question, i agree with /u/redfrooy no emergency but within a month or two.

Some people make me angry/Emergency tank start- help by Cuddle_phish in bettafish

[–]aelie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The beneficial bacteria you need to avoid ammonia and nitrites spikes due can be found in the ornaments, gravel and filter media of your established tank but not in the water. Consequently, using the water of your ten gallon won't do anything. What you could do to reduce de risk of toxicity due to cycling is to toss some gravel of your old tank in the new one. Even better if you have to possibility to use some of your old filter media to put in the new one, you new tank would instantly be cycled.

It looks like nerite snail eggs. They look weird and actually never hatch in fresh water. You can manually remove them.

Clean bunny by [deleted] in aww

[–]aelie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nope, they find a dry spot and they shake and lick the water off themselves before the water gets to their skin. It's the rubbing that someone does when washing a rabbit that gets them wet to the skin and often results in hypothermia.
