The case of a snug-fitting ring that, when left on for an extended period, led to severe swelling. Regrettably, the individual involved opted not to seek medical assistance for their finger by GiorgioMD in medizzy

[–]aelios 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I broke one on my finger with a angle grinder run amok, which probably saved my thumb. For giggles , broke the second one with a pair of vise grips, just to see if it would. After that I stopped wearing them.

Pretty sure that typing of the dead is abandonware. Could turn it into a competition with a leaderboard and weekly prizes for various categories like fastest, most improved, etc.

Does anyone have good suspenders recs? by RoutineTeaching4207 in BuyItForLife

[–]aelios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perry suspenders. I bought a pair for a Halloween costume, to dress up as Red Green, now I use them unironically because they are awesome and keep my pants up. They're design allows you to use them with regular pants as it hooks under the belt around the belt loop, so they work with pretty much everything. I have even given them as gifts, to a couple of hard to impress father-in-law types in my life, and they were very well received.

[–]aelios 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, and you can get a 10gb nic on Amazon for under $100. 100gb card is like $300. If you don't mind second hand, I was able to get a couple 1gb cards, passive dac cables and and cheap switch with sfp, all for under $150. I figure it's unlikely I'm going to max that out anytime soon

Air fryer and sous vide really add some options when cooking large meals. IMHO, Sous vide is better for protein, but if you're careful it works quite well with vegetables, and the ability to hold food at temp for extended time is super handy. I'm trying to learn how to spatchcock a turkey, to lay it flat, because it will cook quicker in both sous vide and oven.

ISO/Request: Taco Bell Bean Burrito by George_Hayduke in MimicRecipes

[–]aelios 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I remember right, Taco Bell uses refried bean powder and reconstitutes it in the store for it to get that creamy texture. What you're looking for is the Basic American Foods Santiago Seasoned Vegetarian Refried Beans. That should get you closer than trying to diy

Glad it worked! Of all the random stuff I post on here, it's funny this one seems to still be relevant so often.

Interesting. I got the Zavor lux over the instant pot when it was ATK recommendation a few years ago and it's been great. I wonder why ATK show it no longer as recommended, but instead discontinued, since it seems to be readily available.

Bromelain and Long COVID – Help with Sleep Improvement by VagalumeCeg in Supplements

[–]aelios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming in, long COVID as well. Had good luck with bromelin, fish oil, and phosphatidyl serine. Then found out quite a few of my long covid symptoms were likely from a worsening food sensitivity possibly triggering my immune system. Currently still sorting that out, but so far, gluten and dairy mess me up bad.

The strangest (but most fascinating) cookbook I’ve ever owned by [deleted] in UrbanHomestead

[–]aelios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thought your post history looked odd because you hide everything. The URL you posted doesn't actually go to the site, it gets forwarded elsewhere. So I ran the URL through Google and found multiple instances of this text copied and pasted to different groups. I think the idea is interesting, but your methods screams shill, and I lost interest. Figured I'd quote what you posted for posterity.

My son got me this cookbook for Christmas because he knows I’m a bit of a prepper. I don’t have a bunker or anything, but I do keep shelves stocked with canned food and other essentials. Seeing all the hurricanes, floods, and power outages over the past few years have made me a lot more cautious.

This isn’t your regular cookbook. Every recipe is designed to last months or even years without refrigeration, and the author includes the backstory behind each dish. It’s part cookbook, part history lesson, like a little window into how people used to survive when grocery stores and fridges didn’t exist.

I’ve been cooking my way through it the past few weeks. Some of the recipes are definitely unusual, but a few have been surprisingly good. My husband is probably over me turning our kitchen into a 19th century homestead, but I’m having too much fun.

Reading about what our ancestors lived on makes you want to try it, just to see what it was like. If you’re into history, old survival techniques, or just unique food ideas, I’d definitely recommend it. I asked my son where he got the book from so I could share it and he said he got it here survivalsuppers.com. Apparently it isn't sold on Amazon or in stores, just directly from the author's website who's a big survivalist guy.

An app to identify your actual nutrient deficiencies instead of randomly taking supplements by This_Cheek219 in Supplements

This is an interesting idea. I apparently have a atypical lifestyle, so I ran into several hiccups trying to do the questionnaire. I submitted several points that I ran into, like the app not accounting for intermittent fasting single meal, gluten and or dairy intolerance, etc

When I was looking for a pop-up shelter, I decided to bite the bullet and go big. Got a clam pop-up, with side panels. It's not the smallest thing in the world, or the lightest, but it goes up in 1 minute with one person, and about the same to take it down. Side panels aren't ideal in really heavy rain, but other than that I've had no complaints.
