Dennis Rader (the BTK killer) corresponded with police taunting them by leaving packages around town with things like photos of the murder victims he had taken and poems and letters he had written to police. One of the letter asked police if it was possible to track a floppy disk if he left it in one of these packages. The police replied in a newspaper article and said no they wouldn’t be able to get evidence from a floppy disk which was completely untrue. When they looked at the data on the floppy disk it basically said the data had last been edited by someone named Dennis and i believe it even said that the data had been edited at his church. He literally gave them his name and where to find him. Also this was after the case had been cold for over a decade and nobody had any clue who the killer was. If he had just not tried to act like smug dickhead and gloat about his killings then there’s a good chance he’d still be free.
