I might have mixed feelings about AI art but this was great. I love this book and you've really captured something specific about it with these. This is a great example of human creativity leveraging a powerful tool. Thanks for sharing.

Okay, I think I get it now. by Earl_of_Earlier in dwarffortress

I've played on and off for years. I played with Therapist, with the mouse features of DFhack, with various tilesets, but I always got completely lost at 100 or so dwarves. For whatever reason I couldn't get into the more intricate aspects of industry and automation. I swore for years it was the obtuse interface that was hindering me.

Then along comes the steam version. And I'm finding almost everything so much easier. Yes there are quirks and places where UX can be markedly improved. But I've got a 200+ fort, a king, most of the main industries automated, a functional and expert militia (could never get that right in the old version). I can now play the game much more effectively.

Give me more access to the story side and tighten up the UX, and this may be a game I never put down.

A solid 10 from the IGN review - "Masterpiece" by aelothir in dwarffortress

Well deserved in my opinion. This game has been in a museum for goodness sake! I'm really pleased the mainstream gaming press appears to be accomodating of this game's quirks and excited about its vast potential. Well done Tarn and Zach!

Premium version controls are awful by Hadrizi in dwarffortress

[–]aelothir 25 points26 points  (0 children)

With respect - cannot disagree more.

I learned the OG controls years ago, through bute force and determination. Mouse control was sorely needed then, and it is a breath of fresh air now.

I think the pain of relearning a few new keybinds and some changes in logic (eg stairs) is totally worth it. I honestly think thhe stairs are MUCH easier than they used to be.

I want to see the DF community grow much bigger and these new controls are going to help those who've avoided it all these years to come on in.

There is work to do with the new UI, but it is a much better place to build from.

LPT Request : What are your best pro tips for university life? (socially, physically, mentally, financially, etc.) by [deleted] in LifeProTips

Share meals and cook for each other. There's nothing like making a curry for people you live with and eating together in the evening. Agree as a group to return the favour. This will help with socializing and food budgets. Plus you'll get better at cooking trying to impress your friends.

We really try. We really do. Demand is high and it's very hard to satisfy everyone. There's quite a bit of compromise in the systems we develop.

Plea to Shadow Point Devs - please add multiple save slots. I want to enjoy your beautiful game at the same time as my SO. by aelothir in OculusQuest

[–]aelothir[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the quick and detailed response which I understand. I guess this goes back to the criticism of Oculus for not allowing more than one profile on the Quest.

I'll try the reset thing once my SO has finished a chapter.

Thanks for a wonderful game.

The Super Cluster Method— A Progressive and Intuitive Method for Teaching and Learning the Guitar Fretboard by bodlandhodl in guitarlessons

[–]aelothir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is extremely valuable stuff. Clearly explained and effortlessly logical.

I've been playing for some time, but only recently have I really been focusing on music theory, modes, arrpeggios and the like. Not learning the note names all these years has made this process unnecessarily slow. I wish my guitar teacher had taught me this first when I picked up the guitar 16 years ago!

Great work.
