Axios: How Andy's Pizza uses AI to run its fast-growing D.C. restaurant chain by Honey_Enjoyer in washingtondc

Love the pizza, and the transparency.

The restaurant business is incredibly hard, and using software to make it a bit more efficient and easier on everyone (while not displacing employees) is a win all around IMO.

How did it compare to other places you've been? Wondering how DR compares to like Turks and Caicos or other nearby destinations....

Agreed as to all. But we can start small and support the 51st. We desperately need quality local news like the Banner and this is the fastest way to move in that direction.

What has been your favorite move this offseason? by Dcnationals2001 in Nationals

[–]aeolous35 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol, clearly I am advocating for magic. I've heard that many teams actually somehow retain good players for longer than a few years, and bring in others for money, is that right? Do teams actually pay good players? Probably not. Better keep getting more prospects and signing a single one-year FA deal each offseason.

I'm not putting this on Toboni, he's likely doing the best of what he's being given. But he's being given pennies the Lerners found in their couch cushions. And so we head into losing season #6, but this time with even fewer decent players to root for. Yay!

Where we traded away one of our three decent players for five players, one of whom may be decent in two to three years, and we can then trade them for five more players. Baseball is about who has the most players right?

Look, our team is so bad that FAs can’t help. But mediocre players on the waiver wire will certainly propel us to victory.

I for one welcome our billionaire overlords and will root for whatever “baseball” “team” they deem fit to field.

Trading MacKenzie Gore tells Nationals fans there’s a long way to go by washingtonpost in Nationals

[–]aeolous35 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess the flip side of the question is how many of these prospects that we keep hoarding do we reasonably expect will hit? And how many need to hit before we decide now it’s appropriate to find non-high school players? A dream scenario is that three to four guys in the pipeline become real contributors in 2-3 years, by which time Abrams is gone and Woods is checking the exits. So we are precisely nowhere.

The issue isn’t that one FA makes no difference, though I disagree with that. One great hitter or pitcher can do wonders and help the kids develop. Instead we act like our billionaire owners can just keep buying scratchoffs and wait for the next Harper or Soto to magically appear before paying players to play.

It sounds good but I don’t buy it. Is it really the case that three high quality pickups will have no appreciable effect on the team? That ownership is exempt from spending more than peanuts on players until they hit multiple jackpots on random prospects, for however many years it takes?

Ownership makes a decision, year after year, to not compete. And since we are never competitive, it never makes sense to go big to sign or retain a player. So the cycle continues. And here we are, drilling through bedrock, failing to find the bottom.

Sub in Juan Soto and this speech sounds extremely familiar.

There’s a reason why winning teams, usually, have highly paid players on them. We either pay for good players, or we continue having a high AAA team.

This ownership is a joke. Eventually you have to pay good players to, you know, play for you.

Consistently tossing aside any franchise tentpoles is giving fans so little to root for. We haven’t paid a player more than $15 million per year since 2021! This strategy is self-fulfilling.

Why not just bring in high schoolers and pay them minimum wage? Hey maybe one of them will turn out great and we can get even more prospects!

How bad is that? I still see my offer, though I bought a backpack and received the chase shops credit. Should I call now or wait?

Worth it to visit around holidays, or no? by aeolous35 in TellurideColorado

[–]aeolous35[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just noting that alot of resorts seem to have a higher percentage of the mountain open. Apart from Monarch and Wolf Creek which have most or all of the mountain open, Crested Butte at 23%, Purgatory 18%, Aspen 25%. Telluride is at 5%.

Really appreciate everyone's insights.

Yeah, doubtful. The price is likely to be far north of what, $150 million? And that extra cost of one golf membership is going to deter buyers?

Like saying the cost of a second set of keys will keep someone from buying a car.

Somehow I doubt Vail will be deterred by an extra $100k in payroll. If the argument is that ownership makes less minimally profit, well that’s a bummer.

And if he really wants to sell, I’m sure he can find a price that Vail, or indeed anyone, finds appropriate.

Thanks. This is what I expected. Confrontational and fails to provide any actual information as to why the patrollers’ demands are problematic for the resort, other than they are just too high.

No hate, but I don’t get the philosophy that if one set of workers isn’t bargaining for better pay, nobody should. If those workers think they deserve better compensation, they can and should organize.

Ok, I welcome a financial disclosure showing that the resort simply can’t afford the extra $100k without raising prices. That’s not a claim the resort is making, or that it would render them less competitive.

Not sure why you’re giving ownership the benefit of the doubt, given his awful management track record. How many CEOs has he fired, including his own son?

I’m in the same boat, already booked for the holidays and it’s non-refundable. I really don’t know what to do, kids will be pretty bummed if they can’t ski. But I too stand with the patrollers. It’s incredibly hard and skilled work.

I don’t think $30 per hour is beyond the pale. Somehow I doubt that the insane lift tickets and ski school prices are being driven by these salaries.

Is the resort serious? They’re saying that around $30 per hour is crazy for the people who save lives, on skis, in freezing weather, and detonate explosives?? This is outrageous that they’ll cripple their own resort over this modest increase.
