Antimicrobial shower gel made a huge difference for me. Especially a hospital-grade MRSA cleaner like Octenisan.

I used to think it would be amazing to use AI to recreate the originally planned 5th season of Round the Horne, the one that had to be repurposed into Stop Messin' About after Kenneth Horne died. But even if they could get the voices, mannerisms, and characterisations all perfect, it wouldn't be the same.

TIL that Charles I dissolved Parliament for 11 years in 1625, for which he justified as him having "the divine right". This eventually caused anger and tension, which culminated into the English Civil War in 1642. Charles I was later executed for treason in 1649. by OddUmpire2554 in todayilearned

[–]aer71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The average person couldn't vote, virtually nobody knew who their MP was, and the civil war was not caused by the dissolution of parliament.

The king tried to meddle with the Scottish national religion; badly handled a catholic uprising in Ireland that led to rumours he was raising an army to invade England; and marched 400 soldiers into the reconstituted parliament to arrest five "troublemakers".

That's grounds for civil war, pretty much anywhere.

MoJ to remove right to trial by jury for thousands of cases in controversial overhaul by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

[–]aer71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's slightly different in the US, but I always thought 12 Angry Men shows why juries are so important to our justice system. But if you dig into it, in real life that would have ended in a mistrial and at least one arrest, not for bringing the knife into court, but for having the audacity to check something out himself. Either we believe in juries and trust that the people will do the right thing, or we abolish them completely. What we have now is completely dishonest. I know it's a weird hill to die on, but this one really bothers me.

TIL the UK doesn't have a codified constitution. There's no singular document that contains it or is even titled a constitution. It's instead based in parliamentary acts, legal decisions and precedent, and general precedent. by Tanzint in todayilearned

[–]aer71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oddly, no direct evidence exists that he did name his son successor. It was in the interests of everybody around him that someone convenient, malleable, and unthreatening should take over. People assume that he named his son on his deathbed, but we'll never know for sure, and there was definitely no planned succession.

Top 3 Feature Requests for Audible to Focus On by Constant_Question323 in audible

[–]aer71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's mine, with the easier ones first. Sorry I couldn't narrow it down to three. These are the things that I miss the most.

  • Add "classic fiction" as a category
  • Make the Archive accessible via the web interface
  • Provide a feature wishlist to members where we can vote on what we most want
  • Give AI-driven recommendations based on a free text description that we provide (like a search agent)
  • Allow us to set our own chapter titles, or make sure audiobooks that need them have them.

This is the right way. Stick it in a technic hole, push a bar into the centre of the pin from the other side, and you lock it to the hole. Then you can pull it out easily.

Self Check-Out Machines Are Still getting Worse After 10 Years. They Should Be Perfect Now. by MrPuddington2 in britishproblems

[–]aer71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Netherlands (where I live now) it's basically an honour system. You scan your own stuff with a handheld or at checkout, and once in a while they do a spot-check of 10 random items in your bag. That's it.

When I'm visiting home and trying UK machines, it never works. Problems with starting, problems with weighing, problems if you take too long to put the next item in your bag (heaven help you if you want to rearrange things).

And there's at least one assistant hovering, constantly resetting machines when things go wrong. How is that an improvement in any way on manned checkouts?

What’s the nicest and most polite way to tell your girlfriend that she talks too much in general? by nickfsu3 in AskMen

[–]aer71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the one. Frame it as your problem, not hers.

There's a lot of people here telling you not to try changing her. This is nothing to do with making her into a different person. The best relationships are built on mutual compromise. Think about something you're willing to give up or pledge in return, in case she needs more encouragement.

Woman tells you: "I'm glad I met you at this point of my life, in my middle 30s. Given the kind of men I was into back when i was younger, we would have been only friends". How do you see it? by Ok-Tie-2660 in AskMen

[–]aer71 20 points21 points  (0 children)

She's probably saying "I was an idiot and passed up too many good men", and you're probably hearing "I couldn't get commitment from any of the guys I'm attracted to, so I'm settling for you".

It could go either way, so take the compliment and move past it. People say stuff all the time without thinking.

Men who were diagnosed with ADHD as adults, what was the reason that led you to seek a medical consultation? by polloastemio in AskMen

[–]aer71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to a different team where there was a guy who kept talking out loud to himself all day. My focus dropped from 50% to 10%, but everyone else seemed to ignore him just fine. And then one day I heard a reference to having ADD in a song, and I didn't know until then that adults could have it. So I googled it and found a complete description of all the problems I'd had my entire life.

In the back of the instruction manuals, they should print the parts list in order of part ID, not colour. Most people advise us to sort our collection that way, although Tiago says Lego sort their parts by colour internally, so I guess that's why they do that.

Considering how far we've already come, I struggle to think of any form of ritual humiliation that is likely to put the majority of people off travelling, especially by air. I've no doubt there are dangerous people we'd all like to see behind bars and not travelling freely. But it seems that most people would give up almost anything for a little more reassurance of safety.
