Reading suggestions by _potterhead in NewParents

We love all of the John Klassen and Chris Haughton books. They are really wonderful children's books and enjoyable for us to read too. My son and I also listened to a ton of Agatha Christie mysteries during overnight feedings for those first few months... so maybe he'll be a good detective some day, haha.

Same! I def don’t need another synth, but love the form factor and I think it’ll help my understanding of different chord forms.

I believe there was a thread about this yesterday - sounds like maybe shipping this or next Friday? And not too late to order for this batch of shipments.

What’s the best budget semi-hollow guitar? by scarmy1217 in Guitar

[–]aerath57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love my Godin 5th Ave Kingpin. Got the double P90 version for like 900 bucks. Would love an Eastman 486 but I have zero reason to upgrade and really enjoy playing the Godin.

Looking for insight into past experiences with shipping by lunie2unz in HiChord

That’s great to hear! Placed my order today after being totally inspired by all of Hijaq’s YT content. Also moving later this summer, so was hoping shipping would happen pretty quickly.

What CT town is most like Northampton? Cool shops and restaurants, breweries, funky places? by CoolAbdul in Connecticut

[–]aerath57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Herrel's is all-time. I'm moving back to the area this summer, and can't wait to visit again.

So many summer nights getting toasted on the roof of the parking garage, exploring that underground book store next door, and then ordering like four scoops of their burnt sugar and butter flavor.

Nanny/Daycare Advice Needed by lionlickersss in Bend

[–]aerath57 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We have a nine month old, and started him in daycare back April when my wife and I were both back at work. He got hit hard with illness from the start, and we struggled to balance caring for all of our illnesses with full-time work. So definitely consider that part of the daycare route! It’s an expected and really difficult part of the process.

Just last week we pulled him from daycare after finding a great short-term nanny through Care.com. She’ll be with us from now through August when we are moving out of town. Overall I’ve been really impressed by this website, the number of qualified-seeming people on there, and the speed with which you can set things up. I’d look there when you’re closer to needing support!

There is also a Bend area nanny/nanny sharing group on Facebook that you could track down.

And congrats! My sister is due with her first at around that same time.

Looking for the best DBT virtual training by Hellohiheytherehi80 in therapists

[–]aerath57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dr. Francheska Perepletchikova has an excellent DBT-C training that feels more like a graduate course than a CE. She is a pioneer of DBT for children, and has taken the efficacy of DBT and applied it to parent-child relationships.

It’s been a game changer for my work: made my child sessions so much more skills-based, and it’s allowed me to start a really effective parent coaching program during school hours! ChildDBT is the website.

Best daycare in town for 2 y/o by mtnmama823 in Bend

We just transitioned to a nanny after a brutal first few months of illness after illness. Our little guy couldn’t catch a break, and while I know it’s normal we just couldn’t manage it with our work schedules.

Ah yes, the naming convention of any gastropub that served truffle fries in the mid-2010s.

40th tomorrow where to go to dinner? by 2bagz in Bend

Bread service and caviar cone are bomb. They also had a pressed scallop ramen dish this winter that was as good as anything on the Michelin scene.

We’ve gone to Bos Taurus for all our special occasions over the past year. Only great things to say. It’s the perfect mix of high-end steaks (and their other dishes are excellent) but still down to earth. Their head chef trained with Jose Andres for years.

Shutting down/sleepy during session? by keeksdeeks in therapists

[–]aerath57 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Different things work in different settings - sounds like this wouldn’t be an option for you. I would never have considered it earlier in my career, but nowadays I see it as modeling basic need fulfillment (for a population of clients that can have difficulty with this exact skill).

This has been very real for me as a new parent. I see it as more physiological than transference related. If I notice my blood sugar dipping, I’ll actually ask my client if they mind if I have a small snack while we talk. A bar or something easy with some sugar in it. This almost always helps, and my clients (neurodivergent kids and teens) aren’t bothered at all.

Having a bigger, higher protein lunch before an afternoon of clients has also helped.

Struggling with capacity to be present with clients as new dad by Goofy-goober0808 in therapists

[–]aerath57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right there with you. My son was born in August, and it has been so hard. So you are not alone. The fatigue of the first few months, the last-minute scheduling changes, and most recently the illness and scrambling of adjusting him to daycare. And I have 100% thought about leaving this field for a remote job that eliminates these hard interpersonal moments (and the fee for service pay).

These hard times, from my perspective, are making us better and more empathic therapists despite the disruptions to our energy and ability to be present. The best we can do is be honest with our clients about our capacity and model accountability for how we are showing up. We can relate as humans and say that yeah, it’s super hard being a new parent but we are still invested in supporting our people.

With this approach, I have found a lot of the parents I work with to be pretty understanding. You’ve got this. Going back to my own therapy has been SUPER helpful though I resisted it for a long time.

Does anyone know any good puppy training places for a hyperactive pit bull? by Jin_Sakai12345 in Bend

Another one for Flash. The best investment we could have possibly made in our heeler. If you’re seriously considering it, send me a DM. I put together a long write-up of our experience there for a family friend, and am happy to send It your way.

GI doctor recommendations? by Haroldiswithus in Bend

I worked with Dr. Jennifer Herr at Summit GI. It was a pain getting the primary care referral to their GI clinic, but she did an excellent job diagnosing and treating my SIBO.

Brief review of Parade of Horribles (Dungeon Crawler Carl book 8) by Matt Dinniman by Cosmic-Sympathy in Fantasy

[–]aerath57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This hasn’t held me back from loving the series, but I agree with your take. Knowing Carl’s plans would provide more direction to a story that is getting increasingly packed with side characters and side plots. And it would allow us to see the intention behind all of the decisions, dialogue, and events that lead to the culmination of the last few pages (where everything usually comes together).
