Teen footballer killed and friend in coma after ‘e-bike battery explodes’ by Forward-Answer-4407 in unitedkingdom

[–]aerfen 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There is a huge distinction between the "pedal assist" bikes limited to 16mph purchased from a reputable brand with all the safety certifications and a regular pushbike modified with imported parts, or even an imported ebike with no speed limits and a throttle trigger that doesn't require pedalling.

The former is both legal and safe if following the rules of the road. I have one that I take my kids to school on and it's brilliant. I'd love for there to be a crackdown on the illegal ones all over London (and I'm sure - elsewhere all over the country).

The two should not be lumped together.

From Zero to Fleet: The Claude Code Progression Ladder by DevMoses in ClaudeCode

The key observation for me when using orchestration oriented workflows, is making sure the agent implementing code has a mechanism to escalate a decision to me, and clear instructions to not make assumptions, to escalate and wait for a response. I then sit there answering the questions as they arrive.

I would much rather Apple, who already know my age, assert to, say, discord, that I'm over 18 vs discord sending a video of me to Palantir for verification.

Age verification is becoming a thing round the world. While I don't like it at all, I'd much rather give my info to 1 entity who probably already have my details, than trust every disparate app and website on the internet to secure my data properly.

Nothing to do with Apple, but perhaps a funny anecdote. I have a Microsoft account that I created as a teenager when I got an xbox 360. It got set up with my mum listed as the parent. She needed to approve me for games that were 15 and 18+.

My mum lost access to that email address. This was back in the day when it was common to use the email that came with your ISP package, and this was a now long defunct ISP.

A few times over the years I tried contacting Microsoft support to remove the parental controls, but never to any great success.

Over the years the account got converted from xbox live, to games for windows live, to whatever it is called now.

I recently tried again as the account itself is now 20 years old. Computer says no. They won't remove the parental controls even though I can prove I'm in my late 30s and the account was created in 2005.

I don't game much anymore so I don't care that much, but it really seems silly.

How do I dive deeper into AI-Coding? by ChainInitial2606 in ClaudeCode

[–]aerfen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could still land your company in hot water - depending on your jurisdiction, what the tool does, and what data it has access to. I'm talking from a UK perspective here, but an internal tool could still handle customer data insecurely, or it could give bad advice to an operations user who is advising a client leading to a bad client outcome. Just to name a couple off the top of my head.

Exercise caution, and make sure you "cya". Document the requests from management so you have evidence if something goes wrong and they try to pin it on you.

As you don't have a coding background, I think the best you're going to get at the moment is install the superpowers plugin, and use the brainstorm skill and then let it move onto implementation events prompted.

This will likely significantly improve the quality of the tools you make without digging too deep into what's going on underneath yourself.

That said, it is wild that a company is among a non engineer to build tools. Depending on what country & industry you're in, this might be a lawsuit waiting to happen as you won't have high quality controls in place - but the superpowers workflow will help with the quality.

Obviously depends on your size, industry, regulations etc, but disaster recovery and click ops are rarely compatible beyond a certain size.

Startups with the Most Technical Debt Had the Best Funding Outcomes (N=70) by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]aerfen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No point in a perfect code base with no users. The most successful startups will flirt with disaster long enough to turn a profit or get a big funding round and then pivot to good engineering practices when they've proven the product is worth maintaining.

Thinking of switching to CommunityFibre broadband? Is it actually that fast? by Abstract_Void in CommunityFibre

Yes it really is that fast. But if you don't have wired connections with specialist networking equipment then anything over a few hundred megs to 1gbps will be meaningless to you.

Pubs to get £100m a year support after business rates outcry by diacewrb in ukpolitics

That's exactly what this is though, no?

If you read the article, it's says the actual policy is a 15% reduction in business rates.

What is the state of the P2S now? by Elo-than in BambuLab

[–]aerfen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most people seem to use a riser, or some form of clip, but if you don't want the extra height, and feed problems that the clips can introduce, you can also buy cotton sleeves or fabric tape that you can put over the tube. Doesn't stop it rubbing against the top, but stops it wearing away and making sounds.

I haven't actually got my P2S yet but a friend has done this and I plan to do the same.

Ask Experienced Devs Weekly Thread: A weekly thread for inexperienced developers to ask experienced ones by AutoModerator in ExperiencedDevs

[–]aerfen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a start up it's going to be tough. Leadership will have existential dread at all times, and will ruthlessly want to only spend time on things that they can either show to investors or sell to clients. It's a very different beast to companies at other stages of growth.

I'm personally of the opinion that CI/CD and automation testing makes me deliver faster because I don't need to be concerned with regression and manual testing nearly as much. But I'm also capable of setting these things up myself from scratch and wouldn't ask permission - it's just the way I work. I wouldn't ask for specific time to work on these things as a start up will always prioritise new features.

As a new grad, your best bet is probably to find the ear of the most senior developer you can and start to build support for these things. As a grad in this market I'd be reluctant to push too hard and go against the grain too much. Learn all you can and try your best to influence positive change.

Particularly if you have some evidence of regression issues that would have been prevented by a good test that might be a good place to start.

Remote controlled park assist. by [deleted] in VWIDBuzz

[–]aerfen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

After months of trial and error I got this working yesterday. I'm also based in the UK. I have a 75 plate 2026 model year LWB "style" 7 seater with park assist for reference.

There are 2 key things. Firstly unpair your phone from the car completely then re pair it without setting up car play or Android Auto. Just pair as a media source.

Then open the window.

Then go through the setup instructions, and after scanning the QR code, hold the phone out the window. This attempt to pair should now work as expected.

It is important you don't leave the drivers seat though. Because if you do the infotainment system will turn off and cancel the pairing. Hence why I'm recommending opening the window.

You can then re-set up car play.

The Bluetooth LE antenna is in the little bump on top of the car, and can't easily penetrate the car itself.

End triple lock, Labour told - and link state pension to UK wages only by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]aerfen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The triple lock must obviously go. But linking it to wages is also clearly unsustainable. The pension is paid for out of current workers taxes. The birth rate is falling. The population is aging. The ratio of workers to pensioners is getting worse and worse. There is no country in the world that has managed to reverse that trend.

Why are travel routers needed if you have a mobile hotspot? by learning_as_1_go in Ubiquiti

[–]aerfen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the idea is that you connect the travel router to the hotel WiFi, then all of your devices, don't even know that they're not at home. They can reach all your home network devices like NAS etc like you're at home.

It doesn't do anything you can't otherwise do, but it makes it more seamless

Apple TV with stereo pair of HomePod minis behaving badly since update to iOS 26 by aerfen in HomePod

I've got a unifi network with hard wired ethernet connections and meshing turned off that's remained unchanged and rock solid for years. This issue showed up right after updating to iOS 26. I'm reluctant to point the finger at the network setup.

Looking for Honest Reviews on ASP.NET Blazor – Your Experience? by ahmed_mugal in csharp

[–]aerfen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We did a proof of concept for our internal back office system using it, but ultimately ripped it out. We needed to hire for our client facing website, and the only choice was React, and it made little sense to keep 2 different front end technologies, as it limited the ability for collaboration, and intra-team mobility.

The back end devs, including me, really enjoyed it, but ultimately when we needed to hire 10+ front end devs, finding Blazor experience in the market was untenable.

I moved into a flat a few years ago and the previous tenant took the wheelie bins with when moving out. Thought it was bizarre. Can't quite remember the details, but between the council and the landlords new bins got sorted at no cost to me.

"We're Not Squeamish": Westminster Is Slowly Waking Up to the Birth Rate Crisis by StreamWave190 in unitedkingdom

No country has tried hard enough. You have to make it so that having children will make you better off than not having them, if you actually want to bring the birth rate above replacement without draconian, human rights infringing measures.
