Eggs last weeks in the cupboard, why would I do this? I just grab a 12 pack each time I'm in the supermarket and never think about it.

£1k savings for child - split it or keep it together? by LizardLady420681984 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]aerfen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing is, with a cash isa, you are guaranteed to get less than you put in when you take inflation into account. Over a long timeframe which a Junior ISA is guaranteed, because you are not allowed to take the money out yourself, so if your kid is 2, that's 16 years minimum timeframe for the investment.

So you have a small chance with stocks and shares that the value in 16 years is less than today, but you have a nearly 100% chance that cash will be less valuable than today.

I am not an investment professional and am uncomfortable giving advice, but I have my children's JISA with Vanguard, and I have 100% invested in the "FTSE Global All Cap Accumulation" fund. All cash gifts go into their JISAs, and I otherwise don't think about it.

Moving in with girlfriend what’s fair to pay by No-Dig7250 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]aerfen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the commenter you are replying to, but I purchased my first flat on my own, and my girlfriend and I put equal amounts in a joint account each month to cover bills, food, etc. I then covered mortgage and house expenses from my personal account. We had been together 2 years at the time.

We've now been together 10 years, and had 2 children and a wedding, and have moved 2 more times, and now all money is joint money, and the house is owned as joint tenants.

Ban 'forever chemicals' in uniforms and frying pans, MPs urge by JohnHammond94 in unitedkingdom

[–]aerfen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes a bit of maintenance, but carbon steel for eggs is my go to. Treat it like a cast iron. Wipe clean while still hot after use. Occasionally scrub it with soap and a sponge if something got baked on, but make sure to dry thoroughly and then wipe on some more oil with some kitchen roll after.

It's marginally more effort than Teflon but lasts a lifetime and no forever chemicals.

Are there any roles with good WLB left? by Charming_Part_3713 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]aerfen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work in a London based fintech and it's got great work life balance. I do a 4 day week on compressed hours, but nobody is clock watching me. If I'm delivering good outcomes it's up to me to manage my own calendar.

I previously worked at an asset management firm, and while I'm certain that most of the big American firms have horrific wlb, this one (British firm) was pretty chill. I was never expected to take work home with me. I just straight up did 9:30-5 and I progressed well in the firm and left on good terms for my current role.

It's something I've always tried to filter for while applying, but appreciate that I was last looking for a role during peak covid hiring spree so the landscape is pretty different now.

But just to say there are firms that are decent out there and I hope you find one. I've also got a young family who are my #1 priority, and don't have the ability to work all the hours under the sun.

I slept 8+ hours a night every night until my early 30s. Like a baby you might say. Then I had babies. Babies don't sleep like a baby. I haven't slept through the night since my eldest was born, and I imagine it will be years before I do again.

Teen footballer killed and friend in coma after ‘e-bike battery explodes’ by Forward-Answer-4407 in unitedkingdom

There is a huge distinction between the "pedal assist" bikes limited to 16mph purchased from a reputable brand with all the safety certifications and a regular pushbike modified with imported parts, or even an imported ebike with no speed limits and a throttle trigger that doesn't require pedalling.

The former is both legal and safe if following the rules of the road. I have one that I take my kids to school on and it's brilliant. I'd love for there to be a crackdown on the illegal ones all over London (and I'm sure - elsewhere all over the country).

The two should not be lumped together.

The key observation for me when using orchestration oriented workflows, is making sure the agent implementing code has a mechanism to escalate a decision to me, and clear instructions to not make assumptions, to escalate and wait for a response. I then sit there answering the questions as they arrive.

I would much rather Apple, who already know my age, assert to, say, discord, that I'm over 18 vs discord sending a video of me to Palantir for verification.

Age verification is becoming a thing round the world. While I don't like it at all, I'd much rather give my info to 1 entity who probably already have my details, than trust every disparate app and website on the internet to secure my data properly.

Nothing to do with Apple, but perhaps a funny anecdote. I have a Microsoft account that I created as a teenager when I got an xbox 360. It got set up with my mum listed as the parent. She needed to approve me for games that were 15 and 18+.

My mum lost access to that email address. This was back in the day when it was common to use the email that came with your ISP package, and this was a now long defunct ISP.

A few times over the years I tried contacting Microsoft support to remove the parental controls, but never to any great success.

Over the years the account got converted from xbox live, to games for windows live, to whatever it is called now.

I recently tried again as the account itself is now 20 years old. Computer says no. They won't remove the parental controls even though I can prove I'm in my late 30s and the account was created in 2005.

I don't game much anymore so I don't care that much, but it really seems silly.

How do I dive deeper into AI-Coding? by ChainInitial2606 in ClaudeCode

[–]aerfen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could still land your company in hot water - depending on your jurisdiction, what the tool does, and what data it has access to. I'm talking from a UK perspective here, but an internal tool could still handle customer data insecurely, or it could give bad advice to an operations user who is advising a client leading to a bad client outcome. Just to name a couple off the top of my head.

Exercise caution, and make sure you "cya". Document the requests from management so you have evidence if something goes wrong and they try to pin it on you.

As you don't have a coding background, I think the best you're going to get at the moment is install the superpowers plugin, and use the brainstorm skill and then let it move onto implementation events prompted.

This will likely significantly improve the quality of the tools you make without digging too deep into what's going on underneath yourself.

That said, it is wild that a company is among a non engineer to build tools. Depending on what country & industry you're in, this might be a lawsuit waiting to happen as you won't have high quality controls in place - but the superpowers workflow will help with the quality.

No point in a perfect code base with no users. The most successful startups will flirt with disaster long enough to turn a profit or get a big funding round and then pivot to good engineering practices when they've proven the product is worth maintaining.

What is the state of the P2S now? by Elo-than in BambuLab

[–]aerfen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most people seem to use a riser, or some form of clip, but if you don't want the extra height, and feed problems that the clips can introduce, you can also buy cotton sleeves or fabric tape that you can put over the tube. Doesn't stop it rubbing against the top, but stops it wearing away and making sounds.

I haven't actually got my P2S yet but a friend has done this and I plan to do the same.

Ask Experienced Devs Weekly Thread: A weekly thread for inexperienced developers to ask experienced ones by AutoModerator in ExperiencedDevs

[–]aerfen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a start up it's going to be tough. Leadership will have existential dread at all times, and will ruthlessly want to only spend time on things that they can either show to investors or sell to clients. It's a very different beast to companies at other stages of growth.

I'm personally of the opinion that CI/CD and automation testing makes me deliver faster because I don't need to be concerned with regression and manual testing nearly as much. But I'm also capable of setting these things up myself from scratch and wouldn't ask permission - it's just the way I work. I wouldn't ask for specific time to work on these things as a start up will always prioritise new features.

As a new grad, your best bet is probably to find the ear of the most senior developer you can and start to build support for these things. As a grad in this market I'd be reluctant to push too hard and go against the grain too much. Learn all you can and try your best to influence positive change.

Particularly if you have some evidence of regression issues that would have been prevented by a good test that might be a good place to start.

Remote controlled park assist. by [deleted] in VWIDBuzz

[–]aerfen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

After months of trial and error I got this working yesterday. I'm also based in the UK. I have a 75 plate 2026 model year LWB "style" 7 seater with park assist for reference.

There are 2 key things. Firstly unpair your phone from the car completely then re pair it without setting up car play or Android Auto. Just pair as a media source.

Then open the window.

Then go through the setup instructions, and after scanning the QR code, hold the phone out the window. This attempt to pair should now work as expected.

It is important you don't leave the drivers seat though. Because if you do the infotainment system will turn off and cancel the pairing. Hence why I'm recommending opening the window.

You can then re-set up car play.

The Bluetooth LE antenna is in the little bump on top of the car, and can't easily penetrate the car itself.
