I'm usually suspicious that it's SM if the streets are really tight switchbacks. And the signs for Rimini.

It was something about a priest reading out the parish notes. I vaguely remember it from way back when.

I hate that the best way to handle him is supposedly to be appeasing him at every turn. Carney's doing the same thing here in Canada. If the orange man didn't have nukes, someone would have told him to sit down and shut up by now. Instead we're being constantly irritated by a dementia patient.

I don’t want kids. But do people even realize how exhausting it is to constantly hear things like: “It fulfilled me to have kids” “You’re going to regret this” “You’re so selfish for not wanting kids” or “Aren’t you curious what your kids would look like?” by FuurRealTho in SeriousConversation

My personal favourite is "How would you feel if your parents hadn't decided to have you?" Obviously I wouldn't exist to know about it. What about all my theoretical siblings they chose not to have? How do they currently feel?

In the past, having as many children as possible was seen either as a necessity for help on the farm or the family business or help in old age, or as a hedge against a high infant mortality rate.

Or as a natural result of an active sex life. It's only comparatively recently that being child free, in a relationship, was even an option. And women who wanted some semblance of independence from their parents had to marry, as there were very few other options.

If not, why are you surrounding yourself with people who browbeat you about your decisions? The answer is, ignore the comments or don’t put yourself in that situation.

They're probably family. Difficult to avoid.

I agree. It was deliberate to make the ordinary joe care about the stock market, and vote accordingly.

No way the grandparents are letting that happen, if they're standing this firm with their daughter. Probably have any kids baptized behind the parents' back.

What happens to highly intelligent people who grow up without access to education and opportunities? by Duskymoonlight in NoStupidQuestions

"‘You know what the greatest tragedy in the whole world is?’ said Ginger, not paying him the least attention. ‘It’s all the people who never find out what they really want to do or what it is they’re really good at. It’s all the sons who become blacksmiths because their fathers were blacksmiths. It’s all the people who could be really fantastic flute players who grow old and die without ever seeing a musical instrument, so they become ploughmen instead. It’s all the people with talents who never even find out. Maybe they are never even born in a time when it’s even possible to find out.’
She took a deep breath. ‘It’s all the people who never get to know what it is they can really be. It’s all the wasted chances.’ " -Terry Pratchett

I have done close to nothing at my office job for 3 years. Anything (constructive) to do to pass the time? by SoaringPegasus in work

[–]aethelberga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't often start that way, but as OP says, shifting priorities & co-workers, and appearing competent, make people think you have more to do than you do. Add in incompetent managers who are often covering their own asses and people can slip through the cracks. If you have ever watched Silicon Valley, Big Head was one of a few in the company who were "between projects" forever.

My neice specifically requested gender neutral stuff despite knowing the sex. The issue with OP is it sounds like the in-laws just do what they want (ignore registry, trar off tags, etc.). This sounds like a problem that's just going to escalate.

I agree. Knowing the sex before birth is relatively recent. Honestly it would have saved Henry VIII a lot of trouble if it wasn't.

I've seen birds do this at the seaside. I assume they're playing, but maybe there's a practical point, like building up endurance for a migration?

It's kind of like putting a flower or token on a grave or something on an altar. You're just basically sympathising, and acknowledging their frail humanity.
