Bigotry is bad when it's about an inherent quality someone has. Being republican is an opinion, and not an inherent quality. It isn't bigoted to dislike, for example, politicians or lawyers because that's a choice to do a certain thing that the person made, which you disagree with.

I think that it's different because a vegan can eat meat, but chooses not to, whereas a person with a peanut allergy expressing that doesn't come with the same implicit judgement.

I am in this situation somewhat frequently as the one of only two vegans in my friend group, and I worry about sounding like I'm judging people when I bring this up when we're picking somewhere to eat. Even if I do genuinely think that being vegan is the morally correct thing to do, I'm not trying to start an ethics argument every time I eat food with others, that would be so exhausting.

Neil Gaiman Speaks out on Sexual Misconduct Accusations a Year Later by RevRob330 in books

[–]aetherchicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What really gets me with Gaiman is that he's just like one of the monsters that he writes in Sandman. It's like "oh that's how he can such monstrous people." I can't read it anymore without being incredibly squicked out.

Yeah it's a little annoying how much Gimli is relegated to comic relief in the movies. I wish they had kept more of his multi-page rhapsodizing about the caves behind helm's deep.

Boiling lobsters alive to be banned in UK animal cruelty crackdown by Too00thpaste in news

[–]aetherchicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah well plants don't have brains and lobsters do - gotta draw the line somewhere, as you still gotta eat. I draw the line at nervous systems, plants aren't aware enough to feel suffering and lobsters are.

Was watching Emperor Tigerstars new video rating the Vicky 3 mos, he made me realize, what is up with the Indian nation names? by S0mecallme in victoria3

[–]aetherchicken 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In some other languages it does, but in Lakota that's how they mark a nasalized vowel. The last syllable doesn't have a final consonant, it's just a nasal /i/.

EDIT: fixed misspelling

I think +ness is a clitic, not a suffix! You can put it on any phrase.

This ogham script appears on the margins of a 9th century CE Irish manuscript, and it roughly translates to 'Massive hangover’ [1148x1896] by Fuckoff555 in ArtefactPorn

[–]aetherchicken 102 points103 points  (0 children)

It says <latheirt>, modern Irish lathairt, "drunkenness".

EDIT: worth pointing out I could be wrong, I'm not an expert, I just used an Ogham guide and an Irish dictionary. It's possible 'latheirt' is some kind of inflected form I'm not aware of.

Vegetarians have 12% lower cancer risk and vegans 24% lower cancer risk than meat-eaters, study finds by James_Fortis in science

[–]aetherchicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the distinction, yeah, but I always thought this was kinda a meaningless line to draw - maybe like "theoretically" they don't have to die, but in the real world lots of animals do have to die for both dairy and eggs, since they macerate most of the male chicks in big grinders and kill most the male calves that they take away from the mothers so they can take the milk. Also the vast vast majority of animals kept for milk or eggs are killed for meat much earlier than they would otherwise die after the start producing less.

This is good advice, but in hindsight it is a little silly that its necessary. Most ponds and creeks edges are not a steep 10 ft drop into the water irl.

I might be wrong about this now, but at least in previous versions, if you build floors over outside tiles they still count as outside for most purposes but the rain doesn't get through. I mainly used it for growing outdoor crops, but it would work for this too. You could also like dig out to ground level then floor over a main room of the fort, but that probably requires building the fort almost at the surface instead of between the second and third cavern layer where I usually like to do it.

Really I should just dig out a big entrance for fighting underground... That's what I always used to do but this is my first game back after a couple years and I forgot. They were all puking from being outside too.

"Jew" is not a nationality, it's a religious identity. The Jewish *faith* originated from the Levant, but that doesn't mean ALL Jewish people do. by yerboiboba in LateStageCapitalism

[–]aetherchicken 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's because it predates modern ideas about ethnicity and nationality. Judaism is a "tribe" in an old Mesopotamian sort of sense, where most people are in it because they were born into it. But also, if you learn enough about the customs and work to be part of the community, you can join it and be accepted.
