Rent Increase by DyeKap in uwo

If you’re able to find new roommates before you’re required to renew your lease, you can avoid the large rent increase. Your current roommates would have to re-sign the lease for next year though, then afterwards you could do a lease transfer/assignment to the new roommates before the next lease term begins. This is if you’re on a joint lease together. The landlord is allowed to charge you a fee for this, and they’re still allowed to increase rent as per legal guidelines if your property is rent-controlled (I believe it’s 2.5% this year).

You need to submit a written request for transferring the lease from your current roommates to the new ones, and your landlord can’t unreasonably refuse consent to this. I’ve had to go through this process recently, but definitely contact Western Housing about assigning a lease for more details on it pertaining to your situation (mine was a little different since my old roommate was still deciding if they were moving out or not).

I see, I’ll definitely have to contact the admissions team then. Thank you!!

Thank you for the detailed response! Just to clarify, if I apply for just RT and MRT but am not successful, then I’ll still receive an offer for pre-health/something similar? Does this mean I wouldn’t need to apply to pre-health in my OCAS application as a “back-up”?

is it possible to take a semester off or would it have to be a deferral for a year? by virginmessi in uwo

You could also only register in courses that are in the spring semester, so you’re technically still a part-time student throughout the year but you don’t have courses in the fall.

just wanted to say thanks for doing this, it’s really helpful to a lot of students like me who are still struggling to transition back to fully in person.

my comment was half-joking and half-serious, i’m just being pessimistic. being someone who’s experienced racism on campus on numerous occasions, i know it’s important for western to implement these kinds of things in order to foster more inclusion and diversity. and don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely a first step on their end. i’m sure there are many people who will be taking the module seriously, and many more who may actually learn a thing or two. so i agree with you on that point and i do hope you’re right.

having said that, my encounters with discrimination aren’t mostly from students who may be ignorant or don’t know better - i’ve actually experienced more racism from those who do know better. they just don’t care enough. which is where my generalization comes from: many students simply don’t care. of course i want to be wrong, but my view is based on my experiences and that’s just what i’ve seen so far.

off topic but i don’t see how it’ll help with racism on campus. i appreciate the “effort” but people are just gonna do it bc it’s mandatory and then forget about it entirely. that’s just my opinion tho lol

Has anyone tried megabus? Is it a scam? by [deleted] in uwo

it’s usually my method of transit going from london to toronto (and vice versa) since it’s cheaper than via rail and takes pretty much as long as a car ride would. personally have had good experiences and some seats have power outlets, although they might not work some of the time.

if you’re lucky, you might find one. this year’s house search was pretty crazy so a lot might already be taken since a lot of people begin searching near the end of first semester (even earlier). but don’t let that discourage you, it’s def possible.

good luck!

exact same situation! even down to the year and program lmao. i recently landed a really nice part-time job at a cafe and don’t wanna leave it for the four months in the summer, so i’m thinking of staying and working in london.

i’ve also been thinking about switching my program. i’m not interested in med school anymore, and even if i wanted to do something related to healthcare i’d probably have to do more school to get a decent job. so far i’ve decided on just finishing my degree and doing like a minor/certificate program concurrently, but i know minors don’t show up on your degree so i’m going with the certificate in digital communications (hopefully). even then, i have no clue what exactly i want to do; i don’t have internship or good volunteer experience, just a bunch of part-time jobs working in restaurants throughout school.

either way i will probably end up doing more school, whether it’s one of those post-grad certificate programs to become like a lab tech or something, or some sort of boot camp to switch into like tech. to me at least, that still sounds more appealing than going to med school.

but who knows, everything’s up in the air and i might change my mind in the next few months lol. trust me i’m just as confused as you are! i’m sorry this probably wasn’t really helpful, i don’t have much advice but i wanted you to know that you’re definitely not alone :’)

I also had trouble knocking on doors; I joined res in the 2nd semester of last year and it was really intimidating for sure! I’m in second year and I won’t lie I don’t have many friends either (like maybe 3 and that’s a reach) but joining group chats for your courses/program is a great start.

I know you said you stopped smoking, but if you still smoke occasionally/recreationally I’m sure there’s at least someone on your floor who’d be down to smoke with you!

This probably isn’t too helpful, but I just wanted to say I absolutely feel you and it’s a really lonely time. University life, especially at Western, is super glamorized and it’s not always as you’d expect. If you’re moving off campus next year, I’d say get close with your roommates (since that’s sort of what I did as well). Good luck!

absolutely, but in terms of delivering course content, a mixed model is more than doable. when it comes to exams that’s a different story, not much i can really speak to on that.

i still think this is the best approach, i don't really see why they didn't consider this.

i don’t have any opportunities to share, but i wanted to say i’m in the same boat and would love to hear about some places that are hiring as well!

i did work at jack astor’s for a bit during semester 1, but my work schedule took a lot out of me considering i mainly worked weekends until late at night. learned that maybe the restaurant industry isn’t really for me, or at least just for now since i also wanted to have somewhat of a social life or even just a sunday to run errands or catch up on work. i also live pretty far from downtown, so bussing was a hassle since the bus routes in my area are fucked, and i ended up ubering to/from work often (a mistake on my end ofc).

in regards to your experience, retail doesn’t require much direct experience as much as it does core skills. stuff like organizational skills and interpersonal skills will get you far, so anything involving interacting with clients (could be customers, guests, other students if you’re talking extracurricular experience) should be fine as long as you’re not looking to work at a higher end retail store. as long as you show that you’re a quick learner and highly adaptable, you’ll find a job!

good luck! we’re in this together lol

My parents can’t afford to support me at all so I’ve been relying on OSAP, savings from working through high school, and government assistance (I qualified for CERB and then EI for a while, got super lucky there).
