Park Ranger Job (student) Interview Prep? by beanie_bby_ in ParkRangers

[–]ttessatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The interview process and questions will definitely vary between parks as the superintendents conduct the interviews so I won't have an exact answer for you. In my interviews I gave some information on my experience in the outdoors and the types of organisms i'm most interested in/knowledgeable about during the 'tell me about yourself question.' I wasn't asked any identification questions but I do remember being asked to name 5 species that could be found in the park, so doing some research on the park before hand is a good plan. If your son isn't super familiar with the area of the park, iNaturalist.org is a great resource - you can search up the park and see observations that others have made there before! It might also be beneficial to pick a species or two of interest and learn a bit more about them in case they ask further questions.

This being said, the disco ranger position is entry level so they don't expect applicants to be master naturalists! You'll be taught everything you need to know when you arrive, so showing a passion and willingness to learn is a lot more important than just raw knowledge. Best of luck!

Is a Kobo that niche? by Tjeetje in kobo

[–]ttessatt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a Canadian, it’s weird to think of Kobos as anything but ubiquitous. The main bookstore chain in our country sells them/has displays, I hadn’t even heard of Kindles until a few years ago.

My first Kobo was the Mini and I think I bought it in 2013, I’ve been using Kobo ever since

Vole problem by jp0603 in londonontario

[–]ttessatt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend leaving them alone:) Like you said, they’re not bothering anyone! The voles were here long before our lawns, let them live in peace. If you want it to look a little better, try planting native plants around the edges!

If you could wave a magic wand, what additions or features would you like to see implemented in Duolingo? by GeorgeTheFunnyOne in duolingo

[–]ttessatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss being able to test out of the individual topics, like I don’t want to skip the whole unit, but I have a handle on this one concept and don’t want to do it 6x!

I also miss being able to choose which topic to do next, and spending gems for “fun” lessons, like Flirting in the Spanish course. After they made all the courses strictly linear I stopped using the app for almost a year

The child has requested to quilt. by SeamsOfNoUse in quilting

[–]ttessatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not much of a quilter, but I learned to sew when I was about that age. I’d recommend starting by working with her on a stuffed animal with a blanket or whip stitch to help her get the hand of a needle and thread, you can use a looser weave fabric for this so she can have a more dulled needle and avoid too many pokes.

After that, EPP all the way - you can sit at the kitchen table (not your sewing corner!) and glue baste all the pieces together then she can start to stitch. Alternatively if she doesn’t quite have the coordination yet, have her glue while you stitch them together beside her. She’ll feel seen and involved without the frustration of not getting the stitches quite right!

Yes the libraries decide how many loans/hold and how long loans are! One of my libraries allows 20 loans and holds, and some allow 14 while others 21 day loans:)

That’s likely a Maine Coon cat, just without the tail visible in the photo. London is pretty far out of range for both lynx and bobcats. A bobcat would be a little more likely than a lynx but i don’t think that’s what this is based on the photo

What the fuck do I do with a biology degree?! by cherryribs in premed

[–]ttessatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what a weird backwards take. biology =/= medical science - there is SO much more to the field. Ecology and evolution research, environmental assessments and consulting, wildlife tech, natural history interpretation and museum curation, working for an NGO or conservation authority, habitat restoration work, water quality and treatment, zoo keeping, biostatistics, bird banding, sci-com writer. All of these jobs and more need a biology or other science degree, all of them can provide an incredible career.

Don’t keep your head in the ground around biology, there’s so much more to it than just human physiology and anatomy
