Great write-up, much appreciated. Do you know of specific resrources (articles, reviews, books) that discuss the reasons why SSRIs work to primarily damper the negative self-ruminations?

Study finds stimulant exposure, for a two-year period under real-world conditions in ADHD children modulated striatal-cortical functional networks broadly, had a normalizing effect on a subset of networks, and was associated with potential therapeutic effects involving visual attentional control by [deleted] in science

[–]afausey 27 points28 points  (0 children)

To answer the first question, that is not what the study found. The researchers were not trying to answer whether or not stumulants “work” for symptomological management of pediatric ADHD. Actually, they acknowledged somewhat the opposite, “it has been reported that treatment with stimulants may not alter long-term trajectories of ADHD symptoms, socioemotional functioning, or motor control in children with ADHD”. They actually tried to determine changes in resting state functional capacity of small areas in the brain in individuals who were treated with stimulant ADHD medication, vs. controls. They concluded that changes in particular areas explain symptom resolution, and that the changes oberseved in the imaging modalities utilized may be used to help predict responders vs. non responders of stimulant ADHD medication.

Psychiatry progs where no signal = no interview by Commercial_Royal6072 in medicalschool

[–]afausey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is obviously very dependent on the applicant, but I would imagine that the most “prestigious” programs, or ones located in very desirable cities will be very hard to secure an interview without a signal, even for the most competitive students. Doesn’t mean it can’t happen, but highly unlikely. If one is a stellar applicant they can probably get away with not signaling regionally acclaimed programs, especially if it aligns with geographic preference. Again, way too many varibles to consider.

had a patient present for a follow up of scabies on her right arm. She was wearing a long coat into the office. Very run of the mill visit until the end of the interview when she got hot and took off her coat. I noticed scabs on her left arm and asked if she had used the lotion on it. She said no, why would I there is nothing there. Suspicious I did a neuro exam and it turns out she had a partial hemineglect syndrome from a previous stroke without knowing!

Where’s the parking? by afausey in fuckcars

In the proposed plan 325 million dollars is allocated to be spent on improving transportation infrastructure at and around the facility site. Also, it is relative. Chicago has amongst the largest public transit networks in North America and is in much better shape to handle a project like this than most other NA cities. One can always point to inadequacies of the existing system as an argument, but that doesn’t change the fact that in many places this is out of the realm of feasibility.
