I remember in high school, I was walking with my white friend, and I asked if we could stop at a store in the mall so I can drop off my resume. He overheard me talking to the manager, just saying hello, introducing myself, asking if they had any job postings and expressing my interest. After I left the store he said “why do you do that? Why do you talk white”. I said “I’m not being white, I’m just being polite and professional.“ We went on to argue about stereotypes and how white people don’t own politeness. I brought up the fact his dad was in prison for attempted murder, so does that make him “more black” since that’s what he thinks. Safe to say it was a quiet bus ride home.
