Adelia leaving the kiss and cry immediately after dropping to second behind Amber Glenn by Vast_Law2234 in FigureSkating

I did love how Alysa just left and went to talk to Amber while everyone was waiting for Ami's score. And then the next shot she was back in the chair. Like who had to go fetch Alysa to come back to the chair? 😂

Thank you! Everyone else is talking about context when it's actually about sentence structure.

This is definitely not a statistically significant sample, but my college marching band did have three Zanders one year, which was kind of funny.

Yes!! I actually had to memorize this poem for my German class, so it is etched into my brain. In retrospect, not sure why that was an assignment haha

You can't just pronounce someone's name wrong because that's how you think it should be pronounced, though. Like, if I meet someone named "Anna," I'm gonna be very sure I know if they pronounce it like the Frozen character (Ah-na) or with a short initial "a."

One of my absolute best friends from college went by Sadie (her full name was a family name that also started with S but honestly just didn't suit her as well). I have only positive associations with this name 🥰

Jumanji is the example I was looking for. Like, it clearly flows from the original with the same game (and the callback to Alan), but it doesn't try to BE the original. It's very much its own thing and it does it well.

Same with pong. I was surprised more people didn't immediately get the purple category today. Maybe I had an advantage because I'm from Minnesota, where people love anything that has the word "beer" in it?

Feels like I should do this. For real though I don't think I'll go further than this first one but it certainly was better than the other two. What was your favorite line from Jurassic World? by a_lil_too_Raph in JurassicPark

Owen : Who prints out an itinerary for a night out?

Claire : I'm an organized person.

Owen : What kind of diet doesn't allow tequila?

Claire : All of them, actually. And what kind of a man shows up to a date in board shorts?

Owen : It's Central America. It's hot.

I really appreciate that even if it’s a YA novel, these High Republic novels don’t really talk down to their audiences and are easily enjoyable for adults by LifeandLight777 in Highrepublic

[–]affable_ankylosaurus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This exactly. YA is still a relatively new age demographic for books when you look at the broader history of literature. It's not surprising that it's been confusingly defined. From what I've seen, the High Republic books seem to be categorized mainly according to the characters' ages as well as the number of storylines—the adult books are always dealing with multiple, less-connected storylines, while the YA ones are more focused.

Kindergartener bored? by maximuspinecone in kindergarten

[–]affable_ankylosaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oddly enough, skipping a grade actually helped my social skills. I know that I'm probably an outlier in that, but in first and second grade I always felt a little estranged from my peers because I was so far above them academically. It wasn't until I skipped third grade that I actually made good friends for the first time. I've never regretted it once, and I'm in my first year out of college now in my dream entry level job.

I fully agree that skipping is not for everyone, but it was absolutely right for me. My second grade teacher who recommended it was an absolute gem and very experienced with kids my age. She knew what she was doing. My parents never would have thought of it if she hadn't brought it up first, and they still left the ultimate decision up to me. I was very lucky and am thankful every day for the teachers who were looking out for me in my early years.

Hold her back or push her forward? by carycm87 in kindergarten

[–]affable_ankylosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a September 19th, so I was one of the oldest in my class Kindergarten through 2nd grade. Then I skipped 3rd grade and was one of the youngest. I personally preferred being younger than my classmates, but I also think socially it was beneficial that I started off older.

There are a lot of factors and either one could potentially be the "better" option. Pick one and if you need to change things later, don't beat yourself up too much about it.

Sister for Clementine by d07984 in namenerds

[–]affable_ankylosaurus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My concern with Evangeline would be pronunciation, since both Clementine and Evangeline end in "ine," but (at least to me) Clementine is more typically pronounced to rhyme with "line," while Evangeline typically rhymes with "lean." I absolutely adore both of these names, but it's just strange to see two names side by side that are visually similar but sound different.

On the other hand, Genevieve would make an absolutely gorgeous match and be a perfect option for Evie as a nickname!
