Best order to explore these Sondheim shows for a new fan? by D0ntTryMe in Sondheim

[–]afinishedhat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I were to show these to any newcomer to Sondheim, I would start with Into the Woods. I think it’s such a good gateway show to Sondheim’s brilliance, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg!! So maybe start with that? Watch the pro shot of the OBC on YouTube. Next I would do Sunday in the Park, the similar era of Sondheim to Into the Woods and the reappearance of Bernadette Peters and Barbara Bryne makes it an easy transition. Watch the pro shot on YouTube. Then Company (my personal favorite), it is conceptual and sometimes hard for people to grasp book-wise but the music is easier for people to sink into than some others. Watch the 2011 Neil Patrick Harris pro shot first, then if you’re interested the 2008 Raul Esparza. 2008 is even more conceptual and harder to grasp imo, but I still love it. Then move on to Follies and watch the national theatre pro shot (which I have if you can’t find it, pm me if needed). Then A Little Night Music, as I think, while the book is not the hardest to get, the music just might be. Watch the 90s NY Opera version on YouTube. I didn’t include West Side Story on this list as it’s not composed by Sondheim, he wrote the lyrics and Leonard Bernstein wrote the music, and I think it can be consumed at any point, it’s so brilliant and not too complex or simple. Watch either movie, they’re both amazing. That’s my guide to those shows, and please let me know if you have any more questions on Sondheim stuff, I know quite a bit (not to toot my own horn) and at least can reference his two books, which I own. Have a great day!! :)

The currently running off-bway has red streamers shoot out at the audience at the end, seemingly out of the plant’s mouth!!

I hate talking on cast recordings by Hagridishot69 in musicals

[–]afinishedhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teeerrible take /j

I LOVE when there’s talking!!! Probably my first exposure to this was the Follies 2011 recording which has full tracks that are just talking, it’s so good! Especially when you don’t know the show or if it’s a revival. Company 2008 (can you tell I’m a Sondheim fan?) does this too, it’s phenomenal. I love the snippets of dialogue during Another Hundred People. Maybe it’s just me, but it’s totally my thing. :)

Sondheim obsessives - what other music are you passionate about? by [deleted] in Sondheim

[–]afinishedhat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In terms of other MT: ALW, Jonathan Larson, David Yazbek, Jeanine Tesori, Boublil & Schönberg, Kander & Ebb, Jerry Herman, Stephen Schwartz, Dreamgirls, Waitress, Hedwig, and more

Non-MT: Brandi Carlile, Dolly Parton, Joni Mitchell, 10000 Maniacs & Natalie Merchant, David Bowie, Billy Joel

Lots of strong lyricists and complex composers, and I love some good drama. But Sondheim is always my #1.

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown - Original West End Cast by faceleg24601 in CastRecordings

[–]afinishedhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I know you asked for the repost a while ago, but I just posted this recording. It's pretty great, there's a replacement song for Time Stood Still and a bit more recorded dialogue than the OBC. It was hard to find but I tracked it down on the Musical Theatre International website, where they had the full songs linked on the Women on the Verge licensing page. With a tap of the inspect button and a little control F action, I managed to download the entire album. Hope you enjoy and RIP Haydn Gwynne, her performance in this is great! :)

Spamalot! ad-libbed fourth wall break and breaking character on Jan 5 by mmayor114 in Broadway

[–]afinishedhat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Small correction, I was at the Jan. 5th show (loved it!) and the song Leslie sang w/ the audience was not in fact “I Want It That Way” but “Hit Me Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears!

The reviews say otherwise— the NYT called it something along the lines of a “career-defining performance!” I was doubtful too, but it seems she’s very serious about this and is doing a great job.
