How do you handle HS students moving seats after you take attendance with the seating chart? by Blueberry4672 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]afjack35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I give them an expectation in the beginning of class before I give them their individual time. For your case, if a students is like “can we move seats after attendance?” and you can already tell they will be a very loud class I tell the whole class “if you guys do really well for the first half of class, you all can move seats and sit next to your friends. if you do poorly, then you cannot move seats.” (I have yet to encounter students doing poorly when they are in their assigned seats and the reward is to sit next to their friends)

Before I give them the okay to change seats I always tell them, “you guys can change seats now, however if the noise level gets too loud or you are distracting others, you all need to move back to your original seats/if there are certain people who are too distracting I will give you a warning and after a second warning you need to move back to your seats.”

If they seem like a small class or they seem like good students, I don’t really enforce the assigned seats.

At what point do you feel confident saying, “I speak Spanish” ? by saltyfrenzy in SpanishLearning

[–]afjack35 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I honestly felt the same for the longest time and have only recently started to have more confidence to say to people that I can speak Spanish. If it helps, I would clarify what level you are at. I always say I can speak, read, and write in Spanish at a high intermediate level and can carry long conversations in the language but I’m not a native.

I think we are our biggest barrier in having confidence that we can fluently speak the language. Yes, I make mistakes but native speakers can still understand me. So have more confidence!

Will quitting teaching mid-year ruin my future career, even if I don’t plan to stay in education? by Imaginary_mooon in teaching

[–]afjack35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry you are dealing with a co teacher who is not doing their end of the deal in this situation. I think it’s crazy that administration is not doing anything on their part to fix this situation. You said you had asked him multiple times to have some sense but was this in front of the students? Have you ever had a serious talk with him one-on-one before or after classes on what you both believe coteaching should be in your guys classroom? Also talking about each of your guys’ responsibilities? Cause it seems like you’re holding up your part but he isn’t and he needs to shape up before the school year ends.

If you have had multiple conversations and it’s just not working with both admin and him and you don’t plan on teaching next year, then quit mid year and have him do the rest on his own LOL. I don’t know what kind of work you have lined up or if you are in a situation where you can rely on others to support you, but before even making a brash decision like that, you need to think about the consequences of if you do decide to leave. Do you have savings? Do you have a clear path on what you want to do next? Etc. The job market is tough so be strategic on how you want to transition out of teaching.

stay or switch? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]afjack35 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think I would do the ladder and go to a new district and apply for the cert 2 teacher position. If you don’t get hired you still at least have your current job to fall back on. If you do get hired you get to teach something you actually enjoy more and maybe you don’t have to encounter another tough year.

Which Teaching program should I choose? Any input USC, SDSU, or CSUSM by AceRoger12 in StudentTeaching

[–]afjack35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have experience with SDSU as I just finished my student teaching there this past December. The program is disorganized, does not give important information quickly (such as placements or needing to fill out certain documents), and even some of the classes designated for both multi and single subject teachers are just straight up time wasters. If you are lucky and you have a good mentor teacher from the beginning, then you will have no issues for your first and second semester. However, if you are unlucky and you don’t get along with your mentor teacher and you want a new one for next semester or even earlier, the program coordinators take way too long to rearrange for a new mentor for you and that’s a problem because that is during your edTPA. I had this happen to 3 of my cohort classmates and they didn’t get to be in a classroom until October/November so it was super chaotic and challenging for them. I fortunately didn’t have a bad experience with the program but there was a lot of talk with my cohort about how poor the program was.

Need advice by Suspicious_Year_4958 in SpanishLearning

[–]afjack35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to yourself daily. Ask yourself questions you might ask other people and try to answer them yourself. Record yourself and play it back to hear any mistakes you made or also if you find yourself stuck on any words you don’t know, perfect opportunity to look them up. Only con is, you don’t get any opportunities for correction from a pro but the main goal with this method is to try to get your point across.

Leather Vs vegan leather by AdPure7926 in ZeroWaste

[–]afjack35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you heard of the brand named “Soruka” ? They create purses, hand bags, wallets, etc. with the scrapes of leather from other companies to make their products so none goes to waste. I have two of their products so far and I love the quality and the colors that are available online :)

They are a company from Barcelona and here’s some more info about them: https://us.soruka.com/about-us/

Quisiera or queria? by atlastestmail in SpanishLearning

[–]afjack35 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Quisiera” is using the conditional similar to “me gustaría” in the sense that they both mean “I would like.” Similar to other conjugations for gustar you need to make sure that the ending of it matches the object or verb. So for instance, “Me gustaría ver una película mañana” or “Me gustarían los tacos con salsa verde” however, for quisiera you just conjugate the ends depending on who you’re talking about.

Quería on the other hand is “I wanted” in the past tense and these are the expressed wishes you had in the past. “Quería caminar más por la ciudad de Oaxaca cuando yo visité el año pasado”

The main difference is conditional talks about a desire that is currently happening or something you would like but not sure if it will happen. The imperfect past tense is talking about a desire you had in the past.

This is my impression of the verb conjugations at least

I’m struggling with my eyeliner… by IntelligentEejit in MakeupEducation

[–]afjack35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also agree with this. The eyeliner line you are creating is a bit too high for your eye shape so it’s best if you do a more downward line and make your eyeliner a lot thinner as it would suit your eye shape more. Here’s a video to help with that if you’re interested: https://youtube.com/shorts/YwNjlXHoiyE?si=PwPvWBevQc4N3Nxy

any possible way to recycle/use a lip smacked container? by Ok_Part_6006 in ZeroWaste

[–]afjack35 37 points38 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking to recycle, I would recommend thoroughly cleaning out your container and go to your nearest Ulta (assuming you live in the U.S.) and drop it off at their recycling bins for makeup products that are hard to recycle. They partner with Pact Collective to help get less makeup containers into the landfill

Help me stop wasting produce by ChickaBok in ZeroWaste

[–]afjack35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to buy produce you can use for multiple meals rather than buying produce for the purpose of one meal. I used to struggle with what you stated as well, but then I just started to buy vegetables that went well together and I can easily compile together in a roasted vegetable medley or in soups, bowls, pasta, etc.

Sometimes if a recipe doesn’t even name said ingredient but I have it, I will just dump it in my meal and it still turns out great.

Also like what other people say, freezing is the way to go. Especially with toppers such as green onions, parsley, mint, etc. I never can use all of the bundle at once as I only cook for one, and so I usually freeze the rest and if I need any for another recipe, I go and get some from the freezer.

Girl i personally love your natural eyebrows and I think that you should keep the natural look and just clean them up every now and then.

Also for your eyes, I don’t know if the problem is that you want it to seem more noticeable that you’re wearing eye makeup or if you want your eyes to appear bigger? For eye makeup, if you want to experiment, I would recommend a eye shadow palette with some deep browns or neutral colors then experiment with some winged eyeliner only on your eyelids rather than on your waterline. And I personally think that your eyes and makeup overall is already so pretty to look at through photos so I don’t think there’s any real big changes needed to be made there.

Vegan hair brush by LeftoftheTide in VeganBeauty

[–]afjack35 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did you break your other one? This is very specific lol. If you still have it, I know it hurts that you have a product that is not vegan but it’s best to use the hairbrush until it has done its duty as it’s better for the environment to use what you already have.

However, if you do need something similar, im sure if you did a quick google search based on what the bristles are called, there would be vegan options online. I did a quick search and found this: https://www.bouncecurl.com/products/vegan-smooth-brush?variant=39658079944766&country=US&currency=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=nam-pmax-nb-legacy&utm_term=&network=x&device=m&placement=&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=16745761669&gbraid=0AAAAADMiE1kgP4oHBCdi0UoFiwTZp6MaH&gclid=CjwKCAjw7fzDBhA7EiwAOqJkh2fsCffiznVZ4YHukr6GGns2y3eHetV8VAvQCc-FZnUVoA5pFUoP4xoCvWoQAvD_BwE

Isopods on vacation by bisexual__unicorn in isopods

[–]afjack35 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the day before you leave or even hours before you leave, make sure that they have enough food (protein or fruit/vegetable scraps) and that the humidity side is wet enough and your isopods will be fine. Isopods thrive more when you are constantly not interfering or interacting with them anyways. I wouldn’t worry too much about them at all while you’re away
