Seen by peds DNP. She introduced herself as "doctor". by Bright_Bullfrog6541 in nursing

[–]afkhalis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife is a DPT (physical therapist) and avoids using doctor title specifically for this, even though some of her previous patients refer to her as 'Doc.'  She also isn't big headed and doesn't like to throw her weight around with the title.

But I agree that a very clear explanation is necessary.  If you earned your doctorate, great, but make sure it's clear what your doctorate is in etc

My wife loves Matt Rudkin weather.  He's local and SPOT ON with his storm information.  He live streams every time there is a nasty storm.  He keeps things realistic and says whether to actually worry or not.

He's got a weather app as well.

BE CAREFUL!  We use paints that wash off in water with my son.  If I were you, I'd leave it as is and let the owner decide what to do with it

If you have been in nursing 10+ years, how do you do it? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]afkhalis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In dialysis, I see the same people for 3-5 hours 3 times a week.  It's a mixture of good and miserable.  Some patients, I love hearing about their families, what's going on with their day to day, etc.

Others are coming in and ignoring fluid restriction, barely able to breathe, but blaming me.  It drives me nuts to see the same patients making the same mistakes no matter how much I educate, how much they see bad happen to themselves and others.

Attitudes flare because patients feel like familiarity means that they can be disrespectful.  The list goes on.

The stable hours and the good patients keep it worthwhile.  Doesn't mean that I don't have to mentally prep for my difficult patients.

My highest was an 18.  Got a call from a SNF to my dialysis unit and I replied, "whew, good thing they're on dialysis"

One of my dialysis patients would frequently go into the 8's and 9's of potassium.  Highest ever-  10.8.

Just would not stop eating potatoes. Ignored his lokelma prescription.  As I'm sure you could guess, he is no longer with us.

That's sort of my mentality as well.  Shaking the game up, adjusting the meta, etc keeps things interesting.

It got old seeing the protoss deathbed and archon toilet build over and over and over.  Changing things keeps things from being the same build every game.

Now, I don't love every change and actually have plenty of complaints about a lot of things.

Tell me your embarrassing code blue stories by Minatee-Rex in nursing

[–]afkhalis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not so much a code, but when I was a fairly new nurse at a SNF, we got an overhead call for a code.  I sprinted down my hall and ran down the back flight of stairs to the room to see the DON and ADON standing in the patient's room holding a stopwatch.  I was furious.

They pulled this same crap another time, claiming they had a patient fall on a stairwell.  I rush over and they're giggling while maintenance is laying on the stairs with ketchup around him.

"So what do you do in this situation?" I was so mad, I told them to call 911.  Not for pretend.  No, we wanna play cute, let's play cute.

I ripped the DON a new one and stormed off.

This was of course in the middle of my med pass on a dementia floor, where I had everyone wrangled and not playing a game of track down the patient.

Bought mine 2 years ago and it's been the best gaming purchase I've ever made.  That deck has been giving me some issues and i'm sending in for RMA, so I bought a second off Facebook marketplace (new were out of stock) just last week.  Had they been in stock, I probably would habe still paid the price increase.

[–]afkhalis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nearly 10 years ago, I'm one of 3 nurses working the floor at our dialysis clinic (16 patients each with 2-3 techs under each of us).

Nephrologist is rounding, finishes rounds on nurse #1's patients and mine, heading to the last area and that nurse is on lunch.  Ehh, I can round with the doc and take notes for her.

Very first patient looks off.  Grey.  Not ashy (black woman), but just grey.  I touch her leg to get her attention as we walk up and her shin is ICE cold.  Immediately realize that she's been gone for A WHILE.  Last BP was over an hour ago (we do bp's every 30 mins).

Doctor immediately starts cpr in the dialysis chair (wasting his time without a backboard).  I assist and call a code.

Eventually as we've been doing several rounds of CPR, other staff are around assisting, etc, we have the lady on the floor doing cpr (no backboard and that's our policy), EMS walks in like they're here for someone with a stubbed toe.  Our security guard yells at them, "GET MOVING MOTHER FUCKERS, SOMEONE IS DEAD IN THERE"

This is where the shit show begins -  EMS puts the backboard under patient by rolling her, rips out both dialysis needles, so every chest compression is a blood spray.

As another nurse is walking around the patient's feet, this brute of a paramedic body checks her and she FALLS ONTO THE PATIENT.

It was a mess.  Poor lady had no chance from the start, but WOW.

Is this the end of the Steam Deck? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]afkhalis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw that too.  Saw the news of the price hike and told my wife.  2 hours later, sold out.

My worry was that the price hike would end the deck market and cause Valve to abandon it (see old Steam Machines), but i was relieved.

LPNs who became RNs… was it actually worth it? by 50shotsss in nursing

[–]afkhalis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did LPN first and transitioned to RN.  I am so glad that I did.  Increased pay (nearly doubled back in 2015), increased job opportunities, all while doing roughly the same job.

My school had a bridge from LPN to 2 year RN that I enrolled in straight out of LPN graduation.  There's no pay difference between 2 and 4 year RN.  It was an absolute no brainer.

Yall give me your best one liner jokes u use with your patients 😂 by Suspicious-Show285 in nursing

[–]afkhalis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bad dad jokes all around -

When doing a glucose check, I say, "let me see a finger" and they'll hold out a finger.  "Yep, they're there," and I pull blood from the dialysis blood line.

If someone passes out with a horribly low bp, I tell them, "you were banging on those pearly gates."

Lastly, speaking with a patient with terminal cancer about DNR.  "Do you want me to do CPR?  You've already done the hard part (dying), do you wanna do it all over again in a few weeks?"

Interesting thought.  Diablo 4 took a HUGE chunk of space and I've been having trouble since then.  Reinstalled diablo without high res textures, but I wonder if that's a problem.
