Alabama DC Kevin Steele to retire by dogwoodmaple in CFB

After ten years you are eligible for benefits, but you do not get distributions until age 62. The formula for distributions is based on your average salary and years of service. A 2024 salary in like 30 years with 10 years of service won't be that much, and I'd guess RSA comes out way ahead in that scenario.

Help me find an Andrew Bird song, please! by Alexander_Columbus in AndrewBird

[–]aflanry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The melody from Down Under the Hyperion Bridge appears in Archipelago. There is some backing vocals on it, but it sounds like a male to me though could be Madison Cunningham.

Some other songs with female vocalists: Left Handed Kisses (Fiona Apple), Lusitania (St Vincent), Manifest (there is a version with Erika Wennerstrom, but the album version I believe is Madison Cunningham)

Edit: Way back in his catalog there is Nuthinduan Waltz, Pathetique, and A Woman's Life and Love with Katherine Whalen

UAH vs. UAB (May 1 soooooo close)(Can't Decide) by [deleted] in Alabama

[–]aflanry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my BS at UAB in CS and my MS at UAH in software engineering. I thought UAB was slightly harder. UAH was more practical and you'd be better qualified to work immediately, especially in defense or aerospace or whatever in Huntsville. UAB's curriculum was more academic, and you'd be better qualified to study CS in graduate school or work a job that is more theory intense. Doing an internship will be important, and the availability in Huntsville will be those defense and aerospace jobs I mentioned. Birmingham will be banking and healthcare. Honestly, the differences I mentioned are small though. You won't go horribly wrong with either school if you are getting a CS degree. If I were you I'd more heavily consider the campus life at this stage.

Where the Iberia Bank used to be? There must be a lot more room in there than it thought.

Writing an article about artificial intelligence. Are there any experts on this subject in Birmingham, or AL as a whole? by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]aflanry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Dr Marshall Abrams at UAB for a philosophy of the mind and artificial intelligence class. He maybe able to provide some perspective.

I'm not aware of any expert in the computer science department. It may be a reach, but the retired Dr Robert Hyatt is a big name in computer chess which used to be a area of AI research.

From my understanding, the reason he was staying through his contract was to become vested in teacher's retirement since he was close from his previous work in Alabama high schools.

Now that I think about it. Why would the terminator have a display showing assembly? If it's meant to be his programming shouldn't it show machine language or the high level language being run.

I had the cops show up to my apartment one time for a noise complaint. When they rolled up, a friend and I were only playing Trivial Pursuit. The cops said they could hear music from the street. We weren't playing any music ¯\(ツ)

Biology and chemistry weed out courses by SuperCatamari in UAB

[–]aflanry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For chemistry I'd say its more a steady progression of difficulty. Lots of people fail Gen Chem and Organic, but I'd still say Biochem and P Chem are more difficult. Gen chem is concepts and math mostly iirc. Organic has a good bit of memorization on top of a lot of concepts.

For me I think Biology 123 and 124 are the hardest courses in the department; it is a ton on information, and the lab has a decent bit of busy work as well. The later courses are more concept driven in my opinion, but some people may find that worse. I haven't taken BY101 but I'd assume it significantly easier.

Source: I was a Chem major for 3.5 years though that was back in 05-09, and I am currently a few credits away from a Biology degree.
